Wiarton Willie Predicts An Early Spring On Groundhog Day
/On Tuesday, Groundhog Day, Wiarton Willie decided that Ontario would see an early spring.
The character of Wiarton Willie has been present in South Bruce Peninsula for 65 years. Locals claim his prediction comes true every year.
Legend says that if the groundhog sees its shadow, it will be scared and return to its burrow. That means six more weeks of winter on the way.
If the groundhog stays outside it will be an early spring.
Groundhog Day is usually celebrated with a large crowd in Wiarton, though due to the pandemic this year the event was closed to the public.
While Willie decided it would be an early spring, Shubenacadie Sam, a groundhog from Nova Scotia, predicted the opposite.

Peterborough Police And Trent University Launch Public Body-Worn Camera Survey
/The Peterborough Police Service is partnering with the Trent Research Centre to conduct a survey to better understand and obtain input from the community on police worn body cameras.
Body-worn cameras have entered the public discourse as a potential tool to increase police accountability. The exploration of this technology has become important as many police services across the province and the country are in various stages of research and implementation.
Both organizations are interested in the views and experiences of the citizens of the City of Peterborough, Village of Lakefield, and Township of Cavan-Monaghan.
The survey will be open from Tuesday until Feb. 28.
Responses will help both the police and Trent University understand and learn how the community feels about the use of body-worn cameras as well as form guidelines and policies and potentially a pilot project.
Participation is voluntary and anonymous; however, the Trent researcher is looking for age, gender, career and in which municipality participants reside or work.
To participate in the survey click here.
To acquire a paper copy of the survey contact sdueck@peterborough.ca.

2021 was the second year in a row that CFGP granted over $1 million.
“Our community has stepped up in a big way and I cannot thank them enough for contributing to charitable organizations that really need our help as we all continue to manage through this pandemic,” said Jennifer DeBues, executive director at CFGP. “The charities have been unable to fundraise in the ways they used to before COVID-19, so grants from foundations like ours are more important than ever.”
Charities that received funds crossed a variety of sectors like food insecurity, arts and culture, gender equity and COVID-19 community response initiatives.
“This kind of generosity really highlights the impact that the Community Foundation can have at the local level as we bring together donors from the community who care about a number of different causes and issues, ensuring their funds are distributed to those who need it most,” said Jenn Harrington, chair of CFGP board of directors.
DeBues says that a highlight of 2021 was when one donor donated $250,000 for food security grants.

Leagues, studios, teams and coaches in Peterborough are ready to resume for in person play.
“We are thrilled to be able to open our doors to our students again,” said Robyn Carter, owner at Premiere Dance Peterborough. “Youth sports and extra curricular activities are so important to the mental and physical health of all children. At Premiere we go above and beyond the safety measures required, and know we can provide our dance lessons in a safe environment.”
Time 2 Hoop Basketball Academy is excited to be able to train athletes again and believes that their mental health will improve in doing so.
“We are getting back to an environment where children can be active while they are developing competence, confidence and having fun,” said Joshua Williams, founder of Time 2 Hoop. “Learning new skills, getting exercise, interacting with peers and learning to play with others in a team setting. Being involved with sports also helps develop life skills and deal with the challenges that life brings.”
Jef Dueck, president of the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council, AAA Peterborough Petes, sayd that although the league has lost about a month of ice time, they are ready now more than ever to skate together.
“We are very happy to be back at the rink and playing the sport we love,” he said. “Physical activity and team play are very important to the physical and mental health of our youth. For kids involved in high-level competitive sports programs like AAA hockey, there’s really no substitute for the intensity that comes with their practices and games. We’ve lost a month, some games and a couple of tournaments. But now that we can skate together again, we won’t waste any time getting back to work and chasing after the Provincial Championships.”
Shelbi Kilcollins, assistant coach of the U15AA Ice Kats, says the team is buzzing and ready to get back on the ice.
“Now that we know what a month without hockey looks like we’re ready to capitalize on our excitement,” she said. “The team is focused and ready for success.”
