Grant received the honour for her work on bridging the gap between Indigenous, non-Indigenous culture, business and communities through her facilitation and mediation.

She became involved with the Canadian Canoe Museum through the National Council in 2017. She joined the board in 2018 and became the Chair of the Board of Directors in 2020.

“I cannot think of anyone who deserves this high recognition as much as Victoria,” said Carolyn Hyslop, the Canadian Canoe Museum’s Executive Director. “Her contribution to this country has been immeasurable. The museum is so proud and fortunate to have her leadership and knowledge. She has been such a valuable asset to us, especially during those turbulent pandemic times, as we continued to forge ahead with our plans to create our new home in the community.”

Grant co-founded the Temagami Community Foundation in 2000. She helped create the Indigenous Peoples Resilience Fund. Both foundations have raised and disbursed millions of dollars through resiliency grants.

The newly appointed recipient has served on numerous boards including being a member of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Vice-Chair of the Ontario Health Quality Council, Chair of the Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada, Director of the Counselling Foundation of Canada and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award.

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement and dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Electric City Football Club Announces Two More Statement Signings

Electric City Football Club has agreed to terms with a pair of strikers including former West Ham United and Canadian Premier League Striker Jordan Brown and U Sports All-Canadian and AUS Conference MVP Holly O’Neill.

On the Women’s side ECFC has added more firepower to the squad with the addition of striker Holly O’Neill, a 23-year-old Attacker from St. John’s, Newfoundland.

In 2021, O’Neill led all scorers in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference with 12 goals— including six game-winners, the most in Canadian Universities — in 12 regular-season contests. Her performances led to O’Neill being named a AUS First Team All-Star and the Conference’s Most Valuable Player.

At the National U Sports level, O’Neill’s great 2021 season at Memorial University saw her finish 3rd in the country in scoring, was selected as a First Team All Canadian, and was nominated for U Sports Female Soccer Player of the Year.

“Holly is a player that really caught our attention when we were recruiting across Atlantic Canada as a player who has the ability to play at the next level. She has an eye for scoring goals and proved that this past season with the Memorial Sea Hawks scoring 12 goals in 12 matches,” Ribeiro said. “Outside of her ability to score goals, Holly disrupts the opposition's build-up, closing down space and forcing defenders into making decisions under pressure. We are very excited to have a quality player like Holly join our program this season and we are confident that she will be a player the fans will really enjoy watching.”

O’Neill played her youth soccer for the St. John’s Soccer Club from 2006-2016 and also represented the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial team from 2012-2016. She also played on Team Atlantic in 2013 and 2014.

On the Men’s side ECFC has made yet another statement signing with the addition of English striker Jordan Brown. Brown, 25, is a native of London, England and joins ECFC from Icelandic club Fylkir after a spell at German side VfR Aalen. Canadian soccer fans will know Brown from his two successful seasons in the Canadian Premier League, where Brown made 42 appearances and scored 8 goals in all competitions for Cavalry FC.

Brown is fondly remembered by CPL fans as the first goal scorer in Cavalry FC’s history in the club’s inaugural match, a 2-1 victory over York9 in Calgary, Alberta in 2019.

“I wanted to be a part of ECFC because of my relationship and trust in President Rob Jenkins. Rob was the main reason for coming here to Peterborough.” Brown said. “Then when I heard about the community support, the city and the people living here, that was the second piece I was looking for. Thirdly, it was very interesting to me to be able to build something brand new with young and hungry players and staff. Being one of the first players in a club’s history is something special I can tell my grandkids; which not many players get to say in their careers playing in Europe.”

In the 2019 Canadian Championship quarterfinals, Brown scored the opening goal as Cavalry FC upset Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps FC, knocking them out of the tournament.

“During my time with Cavalry I had the opportunity to watch Jordan Brown day in and day out and see the type of professional and person that he is so I am confident he will be a great fit for us,” said Jenkins, President of ECFC, “Jordan played a key role in the success of Cavalry FC over those first two years through his work ethic, relentless pressing of opponents, and scoring some very memorable and historic goals.”

Brown began his footballing career at the esteemed Arsenal FC academy in North London before switching to the equally revered West Ham United academy in East London. Brown would go on to sign his first professional contract with West Ham United.

In 2016, Brown signed with the widely followed German side Hannover 96’s reserve team, where he had 40 appearances and 9 goals. Brown has also suited up for Chelmsford City FC.

Player announcements are expected to continue over the coming weeks as the team builds its roster leading to training camp in early April. Roster spots are still available and interested players are encouraged to attend open try-outs on April 2. Open Try-Out Registration, Season Ticket Vouchers, and Sponsorship Packages are available now at electriccityfc.com.

Youth Aged 12 - 17 Are Now Eligible For Booster COVID-19 Vaccines

Starting Friday, residents aged 12-17 years are eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster dose at a date that is at least six months after their second dose was received. Residents must be at least 12 years of age to book a booster dose appointment.

At this time, residents 12-17 years of age who require a booster dose are asked to book an appointment through the provincial vaccine booking system. Appointments can be booked:

Residents can still receive a COVID-19 vaccine from participating pharmacies. Pharmacy locations can be found on the provincial webpage at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/vaccine-locations.

“Two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are no longer enough to prevent infection,” said Dr. Thomas Piggott, Medical Officer of Health. “We are seeing that three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are more effective at reducing a person’s risk of hospitalization. It is also more effective at preventing infection altogether.”

Peterborough Public Health will continue to host COVID-19 vaccine clinics throughout Peterborough County and City. Dr. Piggott encourages residents to review the COVID-19 vaccine clinic calendar to find a location near them

“The clinic calendar contains information on the COVID-19 vaccine clinics that we are hosting. We encourage residents to view the eligibility criteria and booking details for a clinic before attending,” said Dr. Piggott.

The COVID-19 vaccine clinic calendar can be found on the Peterborough Public Health webpage at www.peterboroughpublichealth.ca/vaccineclinics

Peterborough Man Joins Team Cycling From Toronto To Halifax Raising Money To Support Care Programs For Cancer Patients

Sean Cullen, a Peterborough local, will be joining a group of cyclists as they travel from Toronto to Halifax to raise money for Wellspring, an organization that provides supportive care programs to help Canadians who are living with cancer.

Wellspring is available at no charge, with no referrals necessary and accepts clients with any type of cancer at any stage in their journey.

They receive no government funding and rely completely on donations.

Cullen, who’s mother in law used Wellsprings services while she battled cancer, says that on top of one-on-one peer support, financial advice and rehabilitation support Wellsprings acts as a community.

“Being diagnosed with cancer can feel isolating so it’s important to have a community to talk with,” he said. “So being able to drop in to any of these locations and have these support groups are incredible.”

There are three Wellsprings locations in the Greater Toronto area, one in Niagara, London, and Brampton as well as a few locations in Alberta.

On August 20, Cullen will join a team of cyclists for 3000 km, week long ride from Toronto to Halifax

The trip will act like a relay, with groups of five or six taking turns making the trek, then being driven to their next starting point twelve hours later.

“We ride day and night, which will be a really cool experience,” he said.

Cullen who is an avid cyclist says he’s excited for the challenge, the adventure it will be and of course to opportunity to raise money for a charity he cares about.

Cullen’s personal fundraising goal is $10,000 and is confident that he will reach his mark before he takes off on his journey in August.

Donations can be made online here. He, along with friends and family, will also be hosting various fundraising events in the coming months. Updates can be found on his Instagram and Facebook page.
