“The Cookie People”; Peterborough Family Deliver Holiday Cheer Through Thousands of Homemade Cookies

Local family the Hurlingtons spread kindness and cheer through holiday baking, delivering 3,000 cookies in their Tudor Crescent neighbourhood.

They moved to Peterborough 17 years ago and became known as ‘The Cookie People,’ distributing the baked goods as a way to get acquainted with their neighbours in the Beavermead Park area.

Six different cookies were baked for the occasion, such as pumpkin spice shortbread, coconut washboard, wholesome jam thumbprints, mango apricot oatmeal, cocoa butter cookie and chocolate crinkle.

The homemade treats were delivered in 200 hand-decorated boxes.

“We bought plain white boxes in bulk and each took some time to decorate them. My little brother Yzedro especially loved drawing unique designs on the boxes,” said Alvea Hurlington, the eldest child of the family. “I’m recently engaged so this might be the last year we're all together over the Christmas break making cookies so it was a little bittersweet but lots of fun.”

Alvea says that new faces and long-time neighbours always enjoy the cookie delivery, which has been a family tradition since moving to the community.

“They've (neighbours) seen our family grow and they've watched each of us grow up. We're so grateful for the friendship and good energy that they bring to our community,” she said. “Every year we deliver to some new neighbours for the very first time. They always look at us a little funny when the group of us show up at the door and hand them a free box of cookies but they are always excited to see us back the next year!”

Alvea says the tradition brings her family together as they listen to music and dance around the house while baking. Photo courtesy of Alvea Hurlington.

Last year in the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hurlington’s put together flyers, offering various services for their neighbours who were isolating such as picking up groceries, mail, emergency childcare or even a friendly phone call free of charge.

“We want to inspire people in every community to do something kind for their neighbours. Whether it's cookies, cupcakes, bread, a painted rock or just a friendly hello, every little act of kindness or service allows us to be a blessing to each other and make our City a better place to live,” said Alvea.

Local Pharmacies To Prescribe Free Medication For 13 Common Ailments In New Year

The Ontario Government launched a way for local pharmacists to prescribe free medications to anyone with a health card for 13 medical ailments announced on Thursday.

Photo by David Tuan Bui.

The prescriptions are available as of Sunday.

This service is meant to remove the need for a doctor’s office visit and provide convenience.

“Stopping by your local pharmacy for quick and easy access to treatment for some of your most common ailments increases your access to the care you need closer to home,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Expanding the ability of pharmacists to provide care is one more way we’re putting people at the centre of our health care system, making it easier, faster and more convenient to access health care in their community.”

Pharmacists will be able to offer prescriptions for:

  • hay fever (allergic rhinitis);

  • oral thrush (candidal stomatitis);

  • pink eye (conjunctivitis; bacterial, allergic and viral);

  • dermatitis (atopic, eczema, allergic and contact);

  • menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea);

  • acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD));

  • hemorrhoids;

  • cold sores (herpes labialis);

  • impetigo;

  • insect bites and hives;

  • tick bites (post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent Lyme disease);

  • sprains and strains (musculoskeletal); and

  • urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Canadian Blood Services Announces Immediate Need for Donors

The Canadian Blood Services announces there is an immediate need for donors from all communities to help grow the blood and plasma supply for patients in need this winter season.

Heavy snowfall, extreme cold and icy conditions in many parts of Canada have led to a shortfall of about 1,500 or ten per cent of expected blood and plasma collections. Continuing winter conditions illness may further impact collections, and the poor weather can also create an increase in trauma events and the demand for blood.

The Canadian Blood Services claim the national inventory of several blood types remains “far below optimal” according to a press release.

“The national blood inventory has declined by over 35 per cent since the start of October. Currently, we have three or four days on hand of several blood types. The ideal inventory of fresh blood products is between five and eight days. We can and will turn this around and we need donors to fill all open appointments,” said Rick Prinzen, chief SC officer and vice president of Donor Relations for the Canadian Blood Services. “We are extremely grateful to the donors that regularly donate and also respond to these immediate needs. We also strongly encourage new donors to join Canada’s lifeline. Ensuring that the national supply meets patients’ needs over the coming weeks is an imperative for all of us. We also ask that donors, to the extent possible and reasonable, keep their appointments this week and throughout January.”

O-negative blood donors are especially needed as this blood type can be transfused to any patient. In times of emergency or for newborn patients, the universal blood type O-negative can make a lifesaving difference.

Same-day and open appointment slots are available at many donation events across Canadian. Book your appointment online at blood.ca, on the GiveBlood app, or by calling 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283).
