Trent Excalibur Men's Lacrosse Begin Title Defense As They Host Baggataway Cup Beginning Friday

The 2023 Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) Baggataway Cup runs through the defending-champion Trent Excalibur Men’s lacrosse team they are defending their national championship title as the host team at Justin Chiu Stadium at Trent University beginning Friday to Sunday.

“We are thrilled to welcome student-athletes, fans and alumni for the second year in a row, to the 2023 Baggataway Cup Championship,” said Nathan McFadden, Trent Athletics director. “The weekend will be an opportunity to witness the spirit of competition as the best teams in the country vie for the coveted Baggataway Cup at Trent’s Justin Chiu Stadium.”

Last season was the school’s first men’s lacrosse Baggataway Cup Championship after an undefeated season. This year, the team finished tied with Carleton University for first place in the East Division with an 8-2 record but dropped to second due to tie-breakers.

“We've had a remarkable season here at Justin Chiu Stadium,” said Mark Farthing, head coach. “Having the opportunity to compete for the national championship is a testament to the team’s dedication and we are excited to pursue the cup again in front of the most passionate fanbase in CUFLA.” 

The first quarterfinal game of the Baggataway Cup is on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The second quarter-final game will begin at 7:30 p.m. while semi-finals will begin on Saturday against the winner of the first quarter-final at 1:30 p.m.

The second semi-final game starts at 4:30 p.m.  The Baggataway Cup final will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. immediately followed by an awards presentation.

The family-friendly event has feature food trucks and a concession stand (no alcohol will be served) and Baggataway Cup apparel for sale. Donia’s Donair food truck will be on site all weekend and BeaverTails will be available on Sunday from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. 

Day passes for the quarterfinal or semifinal games are $10 with tickets for Sunday’s gold medal game $15. Championship tournament passes are $30. Tickets and passes will be available for purchase at the gate and in person at the Trent Athletics Centre next week. Trent students, children under 12 and youth who wear their Trent Excalibur Summer Camp shirts can attend for free.

High Street Temporarily Closed For Traffic Calming Measures Construction

High Street — between Sherbrooke Street and Frank Street — is closing to through traffic on Thursday and Friday for the installation of traffic calming infrastructure announced on Tuesday.

Local access will be maintained for residents within the affected area according to the City of Peterborough.

High Street was selected as one of the pilot areas to study traffic calming measures through the City’s Traffic Calming Policy development. It is being trialed as a one-way street with traffic permitted in the southbound direction between Sherbrooke Street and Frank Street. A protected pedestrian pathway is also being installed between Sherbrooke Street and Frank Street in the sections that do not have a sidewalk.

The policy is intended to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, as well as to reduce aggressive driving behaviour in local neighbourhoods to improve livability according to the City.

Public Requested to Avoid Going to PRHC During Its Perimeter Lockdown Amid Bomb Threat

UPDATE: 2:13 p.m. 31/10/23 The bomb threat has been averted and the PRHC is back to normal.

The Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) is requesting the public including patients and family members to delay visiting their facility as they are on a perimeter lockdown due to a bomb threat uttered late Tuesday morning.

At roughly 11:15 a.m., hospital received a bomb threat from an unknown individual. The hospital says they have no evidence to verify the threat but are taking it seriously.

A code black was immediately declared and Peterborough Police Service are on site with a perimeter lockdown. Patients are able to access the hospital only through the Emergency Department and are being screened prior to entry.

“We understand how frightening this news will be for all those impacted including their family, friends and loved ones,” said Michelene Ough, PRHC director of communicaions in a press release. “We will keep the hospital and broader community informed as more information becomes available.”

Peterborough Police Have Provided Halloween Safety Tips For Trick-Or-Treating

Peterborough Police Service has provided safety tips for everyone as they go trick-or-treating this Halloween.

The Police have provided these safety tips:

  • Carry a flashlight

  • Wear a costume with reflective elements

  • Go up one side of the street & then the other

  • Tell your parents your route

  • Stay on well lit paths; don't go through front yards

  • Have an adult check your candy

  • Do not go to a house where the front light is on

  • Stay on the sidewalk

  • Avoid constantly crossing the street

  • If kids are with parents, do not let kids get go too far ahead

  • Wear bright costumes or reflective colours

  • Do not take shortcuts through other people’s backyards

  • Trick-or-treat in small groups

Fleming College Holding Naming Contest For New Mascot Unveiled In September

After introducing a new mascot in September, Fleming College is holding a contest to name their Phoenix mascot, announced on Monday.

The Phoenix replaced the longtime Fleming Knight which served as the school’s mascot for the past 50 years. The new mascot embraces themes of strength, rebirth and perseverance that Fleming says represent their college community the best according to a press release. 

Participants can enter by liking Fleming’s post and typing suggested mascot name suggestion in the comments section.  

All entries are entered into a draw for a Fleming Phoenix Hoodie. 

The contest runs until Nov. 6.

Trent Excalibur Women's Lacrosse Earn Bronze at Ontario University Athletics Patterson Cup Championships

The Trent Excalibur women’s lacrosse team left Kingston as bronze medalists after a dominating 15-4 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Patterson Cup Championships at Queen’s University over the weekend.

Trent faced off against the Toronto Varsity Blues in their opening contest, defeating them 16-10. Natalie Fournier led the Excalibur with five goals. 

The Excalibur continued their hot start with a 17-3 rout over the Brock Badgers to move to a 2-0 record. Rookie Tyler McDonald had a whopping six goals for Trent.

Trent’s bid for the championship fell short as they fell to Queen’s Gaels in the semi-final game, 13-5. The loss sent the Excalibur to the bronze medal game and eventual win.

McDonald was named Rookie of the Year during the bronze medal ceremony, scoring seven goals for the Excalibur. Goalie Kieran Gerow was named OUA Most Valuable Defensive Player. Gerow and Shaughnessy were named OUA All-Star for Trent.

City of Peterborough Posting 2024 Budget For Review Ahead of Several Public Meetings

The City of Peterborough’s Draft 2024 Budget will be posted for public review next week Monday before a series of public meetings in the next two months, announced on Monday.

City Council will consider approving the financial plan on Dec. 11.

Council is expected to hear a brief presentation and receive the Draft Budget for information, with no discussion or debate on the topic at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 6.

Residents can speak with City staff from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the McDonnel Street Community Centre at 577 McDonnel St.

An informal drop-in opportunity to speak with City staff and the Finance Committee Chair and Vice-Chair about the Draft 2024 Budget is being held from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the main foyer of City Hall, 500 George St. N.

A formal meeting of City Council’s Finance Committee will be held starting at 6 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the Council Chambers at City Hall for Council to hear from registered public delegations on the Draft 2024 Budget. Council will hear from specific local boards and agencies on their 2024 Budget requests to the City during a Finance Committee meeting on Nov. 15.

Council will hold a series of Finance Committee meetings scheduled for Nov. 20 to 23 to review, discuss and debate the contents of the Draft 2024 Budget according to a press release. There are no public delegations during the Finance Committee meetings November 20 to 23. The meetings are open to the public and can be watched live.

Council is anticipated to consider approving the City’s 2024 Budget at its meeting on Dec.11. There is another opportunity for registered public delegations to speak at this meeting. To register as a delegation, visit peterborough.ca/delegations or call 705-742-7777 ext. 1820.

The City started the 2024 Budget process in March with community consultation, including a survey and public meetings. Council held Finance Committee meetings in May and June to review information and consider input from the community. In August, Council held meetings to hear detailed breakdowns of budget implications for services and capital projects before setting a guideline for putting together the Draft 2024 Budget.

Part Time CFO Services LLP Donates $50,000 to the Peterborough Humane Society's Animal Care Centre

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) has received a $50,000 donation from Part Time CFO Services LLP towards the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC).

“Support from our local businesses like Part Time CFO, means the world to us here at PHS,” said Shawn Morey, PHS executive director. “This donation helps us provide more programs and services which in turn helps animals and people in our local community.”

“Part Time CFO Services LLP is committed to giving back to the areas where we live and work via sponsorships, volunteer work, and donations,” said Tim McLaren, CFO director of finance. “Our team members are dedicated to making a positive difference in our community.”

As a result of the donation, PACC’s main reception desk has been named in recognition of CFO and will be identified on the Donor Wall in the lobby.

“Our new Centre allows us to serve more people than ever; we now have a welcoming space where the community can join us,” said Morey. “Everyone who comes through our doors either needs help for their animals or wants to help animals in need, and now we have a space where we can do it all.”

The PHS is in the latest stage of the capital campaign to raise the final $3 million of its $13 million goal for ‘Our Pet Project.’ The rest of the money will help in expanding services and improving animal wellness according to a press release.

Peterborough Man Facing Several Charges Including Assault After Trying to Enter Residence Without Consent

A 28-year-old Peterborough man is facing several charges including assault, possession of a weapon and more after an incident early Sunday morning.

At roughly 2:10 a.m., officers were called to a Park Street and Lansdowne Street area residence and learned that a man was allegedly trying to gain access without consent. When he wasn’t allowed in, he slashed at the male victim and struck his shoulder.  The suspect then slashed the tires on the victim’s vehicle before fleeing the area.  The 65-year-old victim was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment. 

Officers determined the suspect may be returning to their residence in the area Highway 7 and Drummond Line. They spotted the suspect walking on the road and instructed him to stop however the suspect fled.  Police Service Dog Isaac was deployed and the man was apprehended. 

A 28-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault causing bodily harm

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Mischief under $5000

  • Fail to comply with probation

The accused is currently bound by a probation order with the following condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. 

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Sunday.
