While the Canada Day Parade welcomes both community groups and commercial floats, the latter will be charged a fee of $125, payable online, according to a press release.

At roughly 11:30 p.m. the Peterborough Police Service started receiving calls to assist the Peterborough Fire Department with multiple fires lit within a short time frame in close proximity to each other.

Two garbage bins in Millennium Park and one garbage bin each at George Street North and King Street, Charlotte Street and Aylmer and George Street North near Sherbrooke Street were lit according to a police report.

With help from the downtown CCTV footage, Peterborough Police were able to obtain a description of the suspect. Officers canvassed the area and located a woman on a bike matching the person seen on camera in the Reid Street and Simcoe Street area.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

  • Arson - Damage to Property x5

The accused is held in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.

“The footage from the CCTV Program cameras was instrumental in allowing officers to get a description and make an arrest in this case,” according to a statement in a press release.

Several Downtown Roads To Undergo Road Surface Repairs; Work Completion Expected For Fall Next Year

The City of Peterborough has planned to repair several downtown road surfaces with work expected to start next month, announced on Monday.

Photo courtesy of the City of Peterborough.

The work is scheduled to be completed in the fall of next year. The projects have awarded to IPAC Paving Limited.

The scope of work generally includes the removal/disposal/supply/set of select frames, covers, and grates, resetting of valve boxes, select curb removal, curb re-installations, milling of existing asphalt, base asphalt repairs, application of emulsified asphalt tack coat, installation of hot mix asphalt and the application of pavement markings according to a City press release.

The City also adds that these upgrades may not address all drainage issues as this is not a full reconstruction and the project cannot correct existing grading or drainage deficiencies.

Milling and surface asphalt placement is proposed on the following streets:

Peterborough Utilities Group will be completing underground water main rehabilitation at the above-noted locations with the resurfacing of roads to follow next year.

Brock Street, Simcoe Street, King Street, and Murray Street — located between George Street and Water Street — will experience short-term road closures with posted detours during construction works to facilitate the work.

This is expected to impact milling and paving operations by one to two days. George Street, Water Street, Sheridan Street, Brock Street, McDonnel Street and Parkhill Road West will be reduced to a single traffic lane during operations, including eliminating parking along the roadways during structure adjustments, milling and paving.

Milling and paving of George Street and Water Street are proposed to proceed during night operations. Access for local traffic and businesses will be maintained during road closures; however, it is expected that local traffic may experience delays within the construction limits. More concise and/or revised information as it relates to Public impacts will be provided when issuing location-specific construction notices for this project.

Porter Martone's Hat Trick Leads Canada In 8-1 Rout Over Switzerland In IIHF U18 World Championship

The captain led the way as Peterborough’s Porter Martone’s hat trick helped Team Canada rout Switzerland 8-1 at the Vantaa Trio Areena in Vantaa, Finland on Sunday afternoon.

His first goal came on the power play in the second period as teammate Gavin McKenna got into the zone and knifed through the defence and got a shot off. Martone knocked the rebound out of the air and in for a power play goal and a 4-1 lead.

Martone got his second goal in the last minute as Canada got into the offensive zone on the rush. McKenna fed Martone who one-timed it home to give Canada a 7-1 lead.

The Peterborough forward capped off his hat trick with a highlight-reel goal as he got the puck alone in front of the net and shot it between his legs for the 8-1 win.

Canada continues their preliminary rounds and aim to stay undefeated against Kazakhstan on Tuesday at noon.

PTBOCanada is delighted to be running the Business Beat columns each week here, spotlighting new businesses and startups in Peterborough and the Kawarthas. Here is this week’s edition…

Handmade Heaven is on the move.

Thursday will mark their last day at Lansdowne Place as they head to a new shop at Portage Place at 1154 Chemong Rd., between Fabricland and the LCBO. There’s another reason to head to Peterborough airport, even if you’re not flying anywhere.

The Good Baker YPQ has opened in the restaurant space at the terminal building. Seating overlooks the airport’s apron where you get a good view of what’s happening on the runway. It’s open daily from 8 am to 4 pm at 925 Airport Rd., serving breakfast and lunch options as well as pastries.

There’s a new bar in downtown Peterborough called Bar 379, located at 379 Water St. in the former Twisted Wheel location.

It is a live music venue, performance space, cocktail lounge, third place, and safe space. They feature alternative life music, DJs, drag, burlesque, comedy, film screenings, craft beer, craft cocktails, art, and more. Check out their upcoming shows at bar379.ca.
