“I am thrilled that Peterborough has been selected by the World Wildlife Fund to participate in this year’s We Love Cities competition to choose the most environmentally minded community working towards local sustainability goals,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “Being selected to be part of the competition reflects our community’s commitment toward sustainability and progress that we’ve made together on climate change actions.”

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is leading the contest, which raises awareness about local sustainability actions and community engagement in 80 cities across 34 countries. We Love Cities is open for voting from Oct. 1 to 31.

Residents can vote and provide direct input on why they support sustainability efforts in Peterborough at welovecities.org/city/peterborough. Alternatively, interacting with #WeLovePeterborough posts by the City of Peterborough will also count toward the community tally. The WWF will announce the winner of the city with the most social media likes, reposts, and shares in each participating community throughout October.

“The We Love Cities competition is a brilliant platform to build awareness of sustainability and climate action. The WWF is a highly regarded environmental organization that is helping Peterborough reach a wider audience as it achieves its environmental goals,” said Councillor Joy Lachica. “It’s also important for climate work to be engaging and fun, which is why this opportunity is so exciting. Peterborough is contending on the international stage. Let’s help our community claim the top of the leaderboard.”

The WWF nominated Peterborough for the We Love Cities competition because the city was a finalist in the WWF’s One Planet City Challenge. Other Canadian cities joining the We Love Cities contest are Hamilton, Calgary and Vancouver.

The event took place on Sept. 9 at Kawartha Golf Club and was originally announced by Mayor Jeff Leal on Aug. 13.

“I want to sincerely thank all the participants and sponsors who so generously supported these two important causes in our community,” he said. “Special thanks to Nigel Lister for organizing the tournament and to Blake Ulrich, Jamie Carter and all the staff at Kawartha Golf Club for their hard work to make the event run smoothly.”

The tournament drew 80 golfers that saw community members, local businesses, and city leaders for a day of friendly competition and fundraising.

“We are so appreciative of Mayor Leal selecting KFS as one of the recipients of the Inaugural Peterborough Mayoral Invitational,” said Ashlee Aitken, KFS general manager. “Food Insecurity is unfortunately on the rise in Peterborough and County and this financial support will allow us to supply our 37 member agencies with much needed food items to assist in feeding nearly 14,000 individuals. Thank you to all who participated in making this a fun day for two fantastic causes.”

“We are so pleased to have been chosen and to have a role on such a tremendous day,” Teresa Jordan, CLTF executive director “Despite the rain, everyone was in high spirits, generous and interested. The personal connection that Mayor Leal has with Community Living helped to shine a light on what we aim to do each day in people's lives. It was a wonderful event, and we are so grateful for the support.”

Community Care Peterborough Reveals New Video to Rally Support and Volunteers

Community Care Peterborough (CCP) has released a new promotional video of its services to attract volunteers and financial support to continue serving seniors, announced at their office in East City on Tuesday morning.

The video, ‘Life Changes, Community Doesn't,’ tells the story of a former volunteer named Sophie who uses the same services she once helped provide. The video highlights Community Care Peterborough’s programs, such as Meals on Wheels, transportation, wellness programs and support for those returning home from the hospital.

“This video reflects a powerful truth—circumstances may change as we age or face challenges, but our community is always there,” said Danielle Belair, CCP CEO. We want people to know that they play a critical role in sustaining this network of care.”

While all positions for volunteers are needed, Drivers are one of the higher priorities for CCP.

“We’re looking for roughly 30 drivers but extras are always good, explained Catherine Pink, CCP director of support services. “Every just one day a week. Every little bit helps.”

In addition to raising awareness of the organization's services, the video serves as a call to action for community members according to a press release.

Community Care Peterborough is actively seeking new volunteers to help deliver meals, provide rides to medical appointments, and offer companionship through its various wellness programs. The organization is also appealing to donors to help fund these critical services, as demand continues to grow.

“Our volunteers are the heart of what we do,” said Belair. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to reach as many people or provide the level of care our clients deserve. We hope this video inspires others to get involved and help us keep this community strong.”
