Peterborough County Lifts State of Emergency From Late March Ice Storm

Peterborough County has officially ended the State of Emergency as the region transitions to the Recovery phase following the March 28 to 30 ice storm.

According to the County, the Emergency phase focused on immediate response efforts, including ensuring public safety, restoring critical infrastructure and coordinating emergency services. The Recovery phase will now focus on longer-term efforts such as cleanup and repair.

The State of Emergency was declared on March 31 to support coordinated emergency response efforts and resource allocation across the region in the face of widespread storm damage and power outages.

“With power now restored to all permanent residents and storm cleanup well underway, Peterborough County is officially ending its State of Emergency. I want to extend my sincere thanks to our residents, local businesses, volunteers, the governments of Ontario and Canada and especially to the hydro crews, public works teams, and first responders whose dedication and hard work continue to be instrumental in our recovery,” said Bonnie Clark, Peterborough County Warden. “While this ice storm caused significant disruption, it also highlighted the strength, resilience, and unity of our communities, and while there is still a lot of work to do, Peterborough County is defined by its compassion, and that spirit of community is what will carry us forward. I encourage residents to continue monitoring official channels for safety updates, to exercise caution around waterways due to potential flooding, and to remain vigilant for falling tree limbs in forested areas.”

Services and Recovery Information:

• Peterborough County Depot Drop Off Locations

  • Peterborough County residents have until Wednesday, April 30, 2025, to drop off storm-related brush and tree debris for free at select County depots.

  • Centreline Depot (1275 County Road 24) is CURRENTLY CLOSED due to significant brush accumulation, which has made the site unsafe for public access.

  • County depots are for Peterborough County residents only and are for storm clean-up only - NO leaf and yard waste.

• County Roads and Infrastructure: All Peterborough County roads are open. Cleanup of debris along County roads is ongoing. Please use caution when driving and report any hazards to Peterborough County’s Public Works department.

• Flood Watches/Warnings: For the latest watches and warnings in your area, please contact your local Conservation Authority or the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

• Trail/Park/Forest Closure: Victoria Park and the County Forest remain CLOSED due to unsafe conditions caused by the recent ice storm. Rotary Trail has reopened for recreational use.

The County’s Emergency Operations Centre has stood down and standard operations have resumed. Monitoring and coordination will continue to support the long-term recovery needs.

Peterborough Selected to Host 2026 TELUS Cup National Club Championship

The Electric City has been selected to host the 2026 Telus Cup, Canada’s National Under-18 Men’s Club Championship, announced by Hockey Canada at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Wednesday.

The Telus Cup runs from April 20 to 26 next year with all games at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The event has six elite men’s U18 teams from across the nation battling for the title. The host Peterborough Minor Petes are making their national championship debut in the tournament.

“This is the most exciting hockey moment for our community since we hosted the Memorial Cup in 1996,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “In Peterborough, hockey is more than a game, it is part of our identity. The TELUS Cup is an incredible chance to cheer on the future stars of the sport, showcase our facilities and the home of the legendary Peterborough Petes, and celebrate everything that makes Peterborough an unforgettable destination not only for youth hockey, but also for active family fun.”

The successful bid was led by Peterborough Tourism, the City’s destination marketing program, with the support and partnership of the community including the Ontario Hockey Federation, Peterborough Minor Hockey Council, local tourism business operators and organizations and the Peterborough Petes. The City expects the event to generate more than 1,200 total room nights and over $1 million in economic impact, boosting hotels, restaurants, shops and local attractions during the tournament week.

“Hosting premier hockey events takes a tremendous effort from everyone in the chosen communities,” said Dean McIntosh, senior vice president, revenue, fan experience and community impact. “From volunteers, sponsors and the fans, Canadians from coast to coast step up every year to help grow the game of hockey and provide lifelong memories for these athletes.”

As the oldest continuously operating franchise in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Peterborough Petes have produced over 175 NHL players, including Steve Yzerman, Chris Pronger, Larry Murphy and Bob Gainey. The city has also hosted high-profile events, including the 1996 Memorial Cup and six Mann Cup lacrosse championships between 2004 and 2022.

“Hosting the TELUS Cup is an amazing opportunity for the Peterborough Community and the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council,” said Michael Oke, general manager and vice president of operations. “The Men’s U18 National Club Championship has hosted a number of big names over the years, including Petes alumni like Steve Yzerman, Larry Murphy, Luke Richardson, and Slater Koekkoek to name a few. This is also a great opportunity for the Peterborough Petes and the U18 Petes to showcase our partnership on a national stage.”

The 2025 TELUS Cup is being held in Chilliwack, B.C. Dieppe, N.B. was also announced as the host location for the 2026 Esso Cup.

Peterborough Police Seeking Suspects Stealing Vehicles From Dealership

The Peterborough Police Service are seeking suspects involved in taking two vehicles from a dealership over the weekend.

Officers were called to the Kawartha Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Fiat dealership after employees discovered two vehicles were missing on Tuesday. Both were Jeep Wrangler Rubicons; one was a 2025 model (Anvil Grey) and the other a 2021 model (Black).  

Officers were able to view CCTV footage of the incident, which shows three suspects walking around the vehicles at roughly 10:45 p.m. on Sunday. By 11 p.m., both vehicles had been driven off the lot and were headed eastbound on Lansdowne Street.

Community Future Peterborough Unveils 20 Entrepreneurs For Its 2025 Starter Company Plus Program

Community Future Peterborough’s (CFP) Business Advisory Centre (BAC) has unveiled its 20 businesses selected for its 2025 Starter Company Plus Program, announced at the Venture North Building on Wednesday morning.

CFP received over 70 applications for this year’s cohort.

“This is truly a life-changing program,” said Rosalea Terry, BAC manager. “The quality of applications this year was exceptional, and our selected entrepreneurs represent some of the most committed and determined founders we’ve seen. We are proud to support them on their entrepreneurial journey.”

The Starter Company Plus program helps businesses accelerate their growth with mentorship, training and funding. This provincial government-funded program offers entrepreneurs access to expert guidance, networking opportunities and up to $5,000 in grant funding after completion.

Canadian Rockstar Bryan Adams Hits the Peterborough Memorial Centre On Oct. 7

Canadian rock icon Bryan Adams is hitting the Peterborough Memorial Centre as part of his ‘Roll With The Punches’ North America 2025 tour on Oct. 7, announced on Wednesday.

The show will have rock band ‘The Sheepdogs’ as special guest performers for the event.

“I’m so thrilled to be announcing the North American leg of the Roll With The Punches Tour,” said Adams. “We’ll be playing all the classics, some deep cuts, and sharing some brand-new tracks from the forthcoming album.”

Tickets will first be available through an AMEX presale beginning Tuesday at 10 a.m. with additional presales running throughout the week. General on sale begins May 2 at 10 a.m.

Seasonal Changes to Peterborough Transit Routes Effective Sunday

Peterborough Transit will implement seasonal changes to some of its routes beginning Sunday.

Route 5 The Parkway

Late-night Northbound service is suspended on weekdays and weekends from Sunday, until the beginning of September. Northbound Route 5 finishes at 11:35 p.m. Monday to Saturday and at 7:35 p.m. on Sunday and Holidays.

Route 6 Sherbrooke

Late-night service has been suspended on weekdays and weekends from Sunday until the beginning of September. Eastbound Route 6 finishes at 11:50 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 7:50 p.m. on Sundays and Holidays.

Route 7 Lansdowne

• Route 7 Lansdowne will transition to its spring/summer route using the 7A routing via Ashburnham, the Lift Lock, and Hunter Street from April 27 through Oct. 25. All stops on Rogers Street between Maria Street and Hunter Street will continue to be served on Route 4 trips.

• Route 7 Lansdowne rush hour 7B trip at 7:50 a.m. from Willowcreek Boulevard to Fleming College has been suspended from service

Route 11 Water

Route 11 and 11A Water serving Trent University has been suspended from Monday until the beginning of September.

Detours

Peterborough Transit will adjust its routes to accommodate construction detours as they arise. The following routes have detours in place while construction projects are underway:

Route 9 Parkhill detour at Brealey Drive

Temporary bus stops are located on Sherbrooke Street just east of Brealey Drive during the construction period.

• Westbound routes will travel from Brealey Drive to Sherbrooke Street to Denure Drive to Kawartha Heights Boulevard to Cherryhill Road to Brealey Drive, where it returns to its regular route.

• Eastbound routes will travel from Brealey Drive to Cherryhill Road to Kawartha Heights Boulevard to Denure Drive, to Sherbrooke Drive to Brealey Drive, where it returns to its regular route.

Local Auto Industry Partners With Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School For Automotive Education

Several members of the local autobody industry have united to support the automotive classes at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (TASSS).

Local businesses helping include Carlaw Collision, Pete’s Autobody, Sidey Auto/NAPA, Clements Body Shop, 3M, Caruk, Cooper Auto Glass and Peterborough Auto Recyclers. They contribute by providing essential supplies, expertise and time to the program.

Russelle Toyota donated a vehicle for students to work on, enhancing their hands-on skills in collision repair and automotive service.

“This partnership not only enriches the curriculum but also provides students with practical experience that is vital for their future careers in the automotive industry,” said Bart Packman, Russell Toyota body shop manager.

According to Russelle Toyta, the automotive sector offers a plethora of employment opportunities and this initiative provides students with the chance to gain firsthand experience in collision repair, preparing them for a successful transition into post-secondary education or the workforce.

Many local high schools offer cooperative programs that provide students in Grades 11 and 12 with experiential learning opportunities, including working in automotive jobs.

Road Closures In Place Sunday For GPHSF 2025 Peterborough Butterfly Run

A temporary road closure is in effect for the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation’s (GPHSF) 2025 Peterborough Butterfly Run occurring from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Affected streets will be:

• Engleburn Avenue from the south side of Charles Street to the north side of Maria Street

• Birdsall Street from the south side of Charles Street to the north side of Maria Street

Streets will be made available for local traffic butrunners will be coming through this area between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m..

Additionally, a full road closure will be in place on Maria Street, between Burnham Street and Mark Street, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Detours will be in place at the intersections of Burnham Street and James Street, as well as Mark Street and James Street. Peterborough Police will be present to assist anyone affected by the Maria Street closure in leaving their homes. Delays are expected during this time.

Peterborough Police Seeking Any Suspects Breaking Into Two Construction Sites

Officers with the Peterborough Police Service are investigating after a construction site was broken into twice in the past week and are seeking any suspects.

The first incident on Deline Street was reported on Friday and believed to have happened between Thursday evening and Friday morning. The second incident happened on Sunday at roughly 7 a.m. 

In both cases, the site was broken into and damage was caused to the construction materials.
