You've Driven Past Benmor Towers: This Week Is Your Chance to Take a Look Inside

AON is inviting the Peterborough community to tour Benmor Towers this week and discover what life is like inside the long-standing Parkhill Road West apartment community.

Located at 630 and 650 Parkhill Road near Jackson Park, Benmor Towers will open its doors Tuesday, July 28th, and Thursday, July 30th, for residents interested in learning more about the building, viewing available suites and seeing the amenities and community that have made it a home for many residents over the years.

The open house will take place Tuesday from 9am to noon and Thursday from noon to 3pm. Visitors can stop by during those times to tour the building and speak with AON’s leasing team. No appointment is required, although visitors can sign up ahead of time if they wish.

For Leasing Manager Jeneen Spellman, who has spent more than 20 years helping people find their next home, the most rewarding part of the job is the relationships built along the way.

“I build relationships with them that carry on for years after,” Spellman said.

Benmor Towers is designed as an adult living community, offering residents a comfortable apartment lifestyle with on-site support and a strong sense of community. Spellman said many residents are looking for a more convenient option after selling their home and want a place that allows them to enjoy their next stage of life.

“They’re looking for a turnkey apartment to do their traveling,” she said.

The two-tower complex offers a convenient location with easy access to downtown Peterborough, surrounding areas and nearby green space, including Jackson Park located just behind the property.

During the open house, visitors will have an opportunity to see different suite layouts, including a recently renovated apartment featuring an updated open-concept design, modern kitchen layout, renovated bathroom and additional storage space.

While every suite has its own features, Spellman said one of the things residents appreciate most is the community that has developed inside the building.

“It’s a good sense of community,” she said.

Benmor Towers also has on-site superintendents, with AON staff available to assist residents when needed.

For Spellman, helping someone find the right fit is what continues to make the work rewarding.

“I love the people that I meet every day,” she said. “No day is the same.”

Residents interested in learning more about Benmor Towers can visit during the open house Tuesday from 9am to noon or Thursday from noon to 3pm.

Two Minors Charged With Robbing a Store With a Knife

Two Peterborough teens are facing charges after an incident at a local convenience store on Monday morning.

At roughly 3:20 a.m. on Monday, officers were called to the store at Sherbrooke Street and Denure Drive about a robbery that had just happened involving two males wearing masks, with one brandishing a knife and taking money from the till.

Officers spotted two males matching the description given to police fleeing on foot. The officer followed them and took them into custody at gunpoint as they attempted to jump a fence between houses on a nearby street. During a search after arrest, officers located and seized a knife from one of the suspects and a knife on the ground. Officers also recovered cash, alcohol and candy.  No one was injured in the incident.

A 14-year-old Peterborough male was arrested and charged with:

• Robbery with Theft

A 16-year-old Peterborough male was arrested and charged with:

• Robbery with Weapon

Both accused were released on an undertaking with conditions and are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 14.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the names of the accused cannot be released.

Trent Excalibur Send Two Players and a Coach To Represent Canada at 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship

Student-athletes Maddy Baxter, Maggie Cuddy and head coach Jocelyne Lemay of the Trent Excalibur women’s lacrosse program are representing Canada at the 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24 to Aug. 2.

Lemay is serving as Team Canada’s manager.

“This is an incredible moment for our championship program," said Nathan McFadden, director of Athletics and Recreation at Trent University. "To have two student-athletes and our head coach representing Canada at this international tournament playing against the best teams and players in the world speaks to the level of high-performance players and standard of excellence within Trent Excalibur women's lacrosse. We're extremely proud of Maddy, Maggie, and Jocelyne. Their determination, passion, and professionalism have been instrumental in shaping our program, and we know they will represent both Canada and Trent with tremendous pride while serving as outstanding global ambassadors for our university.”

Entering her second year in the Nursing program at Trent, Baxter has helped Canada defend its gold-medal standard at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, captured a silver medal at the 2022 World Championship after recording 15 points (nine goals, six assists) and previously represented Canada at the 2019 U19 World Cup. In 2025, she was named the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Rookie of the Year after helping the team earn an OUA Gold Medal.

“It's taken a lot of dedication, training, and commitment. I am excited to see all that hard work come together and get back on the field with my teammates,” said Baxter. “My experience at Trent has played a big role in preparing me for this opportunity. Competing at a high level, learning from great coaches and being surrounded by supportive teammates have helped me grow both as an athlete and as a person. It's also pretty special to represent Team Canada alongside my head coach and a teammate from Trent. Having familiar faces by my side makes the experience even more special.”

Cuddy helped Team Canada reach the gold medal game at the World Lacrosse U20 Championship in Hong Kong before representing Canada again at the 2025 World Lacrosse Super Sixes. Cuddy will begin her first season with the Trent Excalibur this fall as she starts her Master of Health Care Management at Trent University.

Lemay helped Canada capture the 2019 World Championship title as a player and, after taking over the Excalibur program in 2024, she guided the team to the 2025 OUA Championship and has continued to establish the program as one of Canada's premier university lacrosse teams.

Cavan-Monaghan Man Arrested For Luring Young Girls at Lansdowne Place and Prince of Wales School

Forty-three-year-old Scott Andrew Duncan of the Township of Cavan-Monaghan is facing 11 charges in connection with incidents involving young girls.

Police are investigating several incidents where Duncan allegedly approached young girls in public places and gave them sexually explicit notes. They occurred between July 10 and July 16 and happened at Lansdowne Place Mall and Prince of Wales School. 

Police were made aware of one incident on July 16 and started an investigation. That led to the discovery of several more incidents. Through further investigation, Duncan was identified, was located and taken into custody on Friday. 

Duncan was arrested and charged with:

• Invitation to Sexual Touching x3

• Criminal Harassment - Threatening Conduct x4

• Make Sexually Explicit Material Available

• Luring a Person Under 16 x3

The accused was held in custody and appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday court on Saturday, where he was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on Aug. 4.

Investigators believe there may be other victims and some incidents may not yet have been reported to police. Anyone with information is asked to call Peterborough Police Detective Constable Koetje at 705-876-1122 x305 or the Peterborough Police Service Crime Line at 705-876-1122 x555. 

To encourage more potential victims to come forward, the Peterborough Police released the accused’s name and photo in accordance with the provisions of the Community Safety and Policing Act (2019; 80(2).

Inaugural Steve Terry Classic a Success, Capped Off by Peterborough 9U AAA Tigers Championship Win

The Peterborough 9U AAA Tigers captured the championship at the inaugural Steve Terry Classic over the weekend, giving the host city plenty to celebrate.

Peterborough earned a 2-0 victory over the Mississauga Twins in the semifinal before defeating the Scarborough Stingers 24-7 in the championship game to claim the tournament title.

The Steve Terry Classic, held in Peterborough from July 23 to 26, brought teams from across Ontario together for a weekend of youth baseball while also supporting local youth mental health initiatives through the PRHC Foundation.

Peterborough teams were well represented throughout the tournament, with local teams participating ranging from 8U A up to 11U AA. The Peterborough 11U AA Tigers also reached their championship game, finishing as runners-up after a hard-fought loss to Northumberland in the final.

The championship win capped off a memorable first edition of the Steve Terry Classic, with the host association celebrating both a successful tournament and a title for its 9U AAA Tigers.

Peterborough Jr. C Lakers Move Within One Win of Meredith Cup Final

The Peterborough Jr. C Lakers are one victory away from the Meredith Cup Final after opening their semifinal series with a pair of home wins over the Cornwall Celtics this weekend.

Peterborough earned an 8-5 victory in Game 1 on Saturday before following it up with a 10-5 win on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Goaltender Braden Hockaday picked up both wins, helping hold the Celtics to five goals in each game. The Lakers also outshot Cornwall 43-34 in Saturday's opener and 51-42 in Game 2.

Saturday's series opener was a tightly played game early, with Peterborough carrying a 1-0 lead into the second period before pulling away with seven goals over the final two periods. Kennen Withers scored twice, while Ryder Perry and Braxtin Howard each finished with two goals and two assists. Logan Giroux and Jordan Garfat also scored.

The Lakers carried that momentum into Sunday's game, building a 2-1 lead after the first period before extending their advantage with four goals in both the second and third periods. Perry led the offence with a hat trick and three assists, while Howard scored twice. Kennen Withers, Ryder Evans, Owen Thake and Ricky Bevan also found the back of the net.

Peterborough will have its first opportunity to clinch a berth in the Meredith Cup Final when Game 3 is played Friday at 8:30 pm in Cornwall. If necessary, Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday at 5 pm, with a deciding Game 5 set for Sunday at 2 pm, also in Cornwall.

The winner of the series will advance to the Meredith Cup Final. The other semifinal between the Whitby Warriors and Six Nations Stealth is tied at one game apiece.

Familiar Reid and Parkhill Corner Reduced to Rubble

A familiar corner in Peterborough has changed dramatically after the building that housed Mister Convenience and Harbour Front Laundry Villa was demolished as part of the City's long-planned Chemong Road reconstruction project.

The property at the corner of Reid Street and Parkhill Road was a familiar sight for many residents, with Mister Convenience at 656 Reid St. and Harbour Front Laundry Villa operating next door at 652 Reid St.

The corner has long been a familiar fixture in the community and a regular stop for local residents at one of the city's busiest intersections.

The demolition is one of the first visible signs of the City's long-planned reconstruction of the Chemong Road corridor. The project includes improvements along Chemong Road, Reid Street and Parkhill Road, including upgraded infrastructure, improved pedestrian and cycling facilities, intersection upgrades and changes designed to improve traffic flow and reduce flooding.

While the building is now gone, it's a location that many longtime residents will remember for the businesses that operated there over the years. Its demolition marks the end of another familiar piece of the neighbourhood streetscape as preparations continue for the future changes planned in the area.

More Hardware for Kawartha Lacrosse with U9 1 Team Capturing Silver at OWFL Provincials

The Kawartha Lacrosse U9 1 team earned a silver medal at the Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse (OWFL) Provincial Championship in Kitchener-Waterloo last weekend.

The team entered the provincial tournament after finishing the regular season in 12th place in the 15-team league with a 3-7 record.

Kawartha advanced to the U9 B Final after a 20-8 semifinal victory over the Toronto Beaches. The team battled the Mimico Mountaineers in the championship game, falling 14-10 to earn the silver medal.

Team members included Ellie Abramczyk, Meyer Abramczyk, Andie Armstrong, Bailey Carroll, Sophie Clarke, Quinn Currie, Zoe Dunn, Frankie Evans, Axelle Keating, Bridgette Reed, Charlotte Miller, Quinn Plunkett, Vanessa Van Dolder and Brynn White.

The team was coached by Sam Berardi and Dionne Kingdon, with Stephanie Armstrong serving as manager. Kristie Abramczyk and Shannon Carroll served as trainers, with Fred Blowes also supporting the team.

The U9 1 team’s silver medal was one of three provincial podium finishes for Kawartha Lacrosse teams last weekend. The U13 team also earned a silver medal at the OWFL Provincials in Kitchener-Waterloo, while the JEWL Elite team captured silver at provincials in Peterborough.

The U15 and U19 teams will compete for their provincial championships in Oakville from August 7-9.

Multiple People Arrested For Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Through 'Project Time'

Members of the Peterborough Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit participated in the province-wide strategy ‘Project Time.’

Project Time was a coordinated provincial effort involving 26 police services to identify and apprehend those who prey on children. Investigators targeted individuals making, possessing, and distributing child sexual abuse material. Victims were also identified and safeguarded, with appropriate support provided to those impacted.

The culmination of the work conducted by investigators with the Peterborough Police Service, as part of the project, includes:

• 4 Arrests resulting in 7 charges & 1 Youth Diversion

• 5 Criminal Code Search Warrants executed

• 15 Judicial Authorizations obtained (Excluding Search Warrants)

• 24 Electronic devices seized for analysis

• Eight Ongoing investigations

A 21-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Material 

The accused was released by the court on a release order after a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on July 28.

A 48-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Material 

• Make Available Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Material 

• Fail to comply with Prohibition Regarding Children (accessing internet/social media platforms)

The accused was denied bail during a bail hearing and remains in custody.  He will appear in court on Sept. 29.

A 73-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

• Make Available Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Material 

• Possession of Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Material 

• Bestiality 

The accused was released by the court on a release order after a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 13.

The youth who was arrested was eligible for diversion in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The names of the accused are not being released due to the above-mentioned ongoing investigations.

The importance of the work our investigators do in cases like this cannot be understated, and they are committed to bring individuals who prey on our children brought before the courts to face charges.  Make no mistake, no police officer or civilian member who is involved in investigations of this nature is left unscathed by the horrors of abuse visited upon these children. Facilitated Discussions Underway For Support Future Growth Opportunities In Peterborough Region

After the City of Peterborough’s request for future employment and residential land need requirements, the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has responded by appointing a Facilitator from the Provincial Land and Development Facilitator’s Office to guide discussions among the City of Peterborough, Cavan Monaghan Township and Peterborough County.

Under the direction of the Facilitator, the City of Peterborough and Cavan Monaghan Township have completed independent Land Needs Studies conducted by third-party consultants. These confidential studies provide critical data to support informed discussions regarding future growth opportunities within the region.

Representatives from all participating municipalities and stakeholders attended the first facilitation meeting to review and share the findings of the Land Needs Studies on Thursday. Additional meetings are planned in the coming months to further examine the data and discuss potential options for accommodating future growth.

This collaborative process aligns with both provincial and local priorities by supporting responsible growth, increasing housing opportunities, creating employment lands, fostering economic development, and ensuring communities are positioned to meet future needs.

At this stage, discussions remain confidential to allow all parties to engage in open and constructive dialogue. Peterborough City Council will continue to receive confidential updates regarding the progress of the facilitation process. Should the participating municipalities reach a mutually supported proposal requiring approval from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, details would be made available to the public as part of a future community engagement and approval process.

“Our focus as a region is on enabling growth, housing construction, employment lands for job creation, and opportunities for residents,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “Peterborough is committed to finding solutions that contribute to shared economic growth and long-term sustainability. I want to personally thank the Province of Ontario for its strong leadership on this critical need for housing and economic prosperity in the Peterborough Region.”

However, Peterborough County is aware of the City’s facilitated discussions, citing the only had one meeting on Friday. At that point, the City presented their Lands Needs Study; the County and Township have not yet had a similar opportunity. 

As the County is in negotiations with the City, facilitated by the Provincial Facilitator and bound to a confidential process, they will abide by the terms of the agreement that all parties signed.

“I am very disappointed that Mayor Leal has decided to issue a release contrary to the agreement,” said Bonnie Clark, Peterborough County Warden.” We take agreements and confidentiality as paramount. To my knowledge, there has been no proposal put forward by the City, and this release seeks to undermine the agreed-upon collaborative process.”
