Two Peterborough Men Wanted On Warrants Arrested For Drug Possession In Separate Incidents

Two Peterborough men wanted on warrants were charged and arrested for drug possession in separate incidents on Wednesday.

An officer on general patrol identified a man walking near Stewart Street and Dalhousie Street who was wanted on multiple warrants.

Officers took the 48-year-old man into custody on the strength of the warrants for:

• Unauthorized possession of a weapon  

• Fail to comply with appearance notice

During the search after arrest, and following an investigation, officers charged the man with:

• Possession of a schedule I substance

The accused is currently bound by a release order with the following condition: do not possess or consume any unlawful drugs.

As a result, the accused was further charged with:

• Fail to comply with release order – other than to attend court

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Wednesday.

Another 48-year-old Peterborough man was arrested on warrants and is facing additional drug-related charges after an investigation on Wednesday.

An officer was conducting a foot patrol near Reid Street and Simcoe Street, where they identified a man wanted on multiple warrants.

Officers took the man into custody on the strength of the warrants for:

• Fail to comply with probation x3

• Fail to comply with appearance notice

• Fail to attend court after having appeared x2

The 48-year-old Peterborough man was further charged with:

• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking

• Possession of a schedule I substance – Cocaine

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Thursday.

Trent University Honours Campus Builder and Philanthropy Champion With Stephen Stohn Eminent Service Awards

Robert Ballarin and Sherry Booth have received the 2026 Stephen Stohn Eminent Service Awards at the Heart of Trent, the campus’s annual employee appreciation event, in recognition of decades of service to the University.

“Trent University continually demonstrates a commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience for students, and at the heart of that commitment are the people who work here,” said Dr. Cathy Bruce, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “This year's Stephen Stohn Eminent Service Award recipients, Robert and Sherry, are wonderful examples of how we stand out by standing closer. Over decades at Trent, they have each invested deeply in this University, and their impact will have lasting effects.”

Created in 1978, the Eminent Service Award recognizes individuals at the culmination of Trent careers whose contributions to the University extended well beyond the responsibilities of their role.

Over three decades at Trent, Booth helped transform philanthropy and alumni engagement at the University. Over her three-decade career at Trent, she held seven roles at the University, starting as Annual Fund coordinator and culminating as associate vice president of Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement. She is also a Trent alumna, completing a degree in the Computing and Information Systems program part-time while working at Trent. Booth championed seven fundraising campaigns for the University that collectively raised more than $130 million, supporting financial aid for thousands of students and leading to the creation of new and renewed campus spaces. A champion of alumni engagement, Booth has helped generations of graduates maintain meaningful connections with Trent and has led by example as a donor for 30 consecutive years.

One alumnus stated the following, “I doubt there is a building, a program, or a trail at Trent that hasn't been shaped by Sherry’s hard work and leadership. Her imprint on Trent has been and will continue to be momentous.”

For over 25 years, Ballarin has helped shape Trent’s campus while stewarding its distinctive built environment. Since joining the University in 2000 as Coordinator, Land, Reality and Project Management, he contributed to numerous transformative projects, including the Endowment Lands Plan, Stanley Adamson Powerhouse, Athletic Centre expansion and the construction of the Trent Child Care, Student Centre, Forensic Crime Scene Facility and River Walk. Throughout his career at Trent, Robert brought a deep respect for the University’s iconic Ron Thom architecture and natural environment to his work, helping create and preserve spaces that enhance campus life while advancing sustainability. 

The celebration also recognized faculty and staff for excellence in service, innovation and community leadership, as well as employees marking significant career milestones.

• Nancy E. Simmons Smith Staff Award of Excellence: Jeff Gardiner, Senior Instructional Technologist, Information Technology  
  Recognizes non-academic staff members who demonstrate excellence and exceptional commitment to Trent.

  Recognizes a team, unit, or department at Trent University whose innovative contributions have impacted the strategic objectives of the University.

• Trent Community Leadership Award: Dr. Andrew Monti, Communications; and Ryan Sisson, Team Lead Community Workplace Partnerships, Trent Community Research Centre 
  Awarded to faculty and staff who make exceptional contributions to the local community in Peterborough or Durham regions.

• Emeritus Awards: Dr. Peri Ballantyne, Sociology; Dr. Charmaine Eddy, English Literature; and Dr. Ray Dart, School of Business 
  The honorific title ‘Emeritus’ is bestowed upon eligible retiring members of the Trent University Faculty Association and librarians for their service and contributions to the University.

• Provost’s Award for Support Staff: Melissa Martin, Sr. Manager, Campus Safety Support Services 
  Awarded annually to a support staff member who plays a key role in student engagement and retention and who makes a difference through their performance at Trent.

• Jackie Muldoon Award for Faculty Service: Dr. Paul Szpak, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Archaeology, and Director of Anthropology Graduate Program

Three Young Friends Come Together to Raise $500 for Cancer Care at PRHC

Three friends have turned their summer neighbourhood visits into a generous $500 donation supporting cancer care at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

Ellie, Aubree and Ellis spent part of their summer going door-to-door in their neighbourhood raising money to support cancer care.

Their efforts recently brought them to the PRHC Foundation, where the trio presented their $500 gift in support of cancer care at PRHC.

It’s a simple example of how community spirit and a little determination can make a difference for regional healthcare.

Tickets on Sale Now for Game 6 Between Lakers and Chiefs on Sunday

Tickets are now on sale for Game 6 of the MSL final, with the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers set to host the Six Nations Chiefs Sunday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 tonight in Six Nations.

So far, the home team has won all four games in the series. The Lakers opened the final with an 11-5 loss in Six Nations before winning Game 2 at the PMC 9-8. The Chiefs took Game 3 at home 12-9, while Peterborough answered with a 12-8 victory in Game 4 on Tuesday.

Game 5 goes tonight in Six Nations, with Game 6 returning to Peterborough regardless of the result.

Game 6 is set for 7pm Sunday at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Two seats for the price of one gives theatre fans a chance to catch Venus in Fur when the production opens at the end of September.

Venus in Fur brings a provocative mix of dark comedy, psychological tension and shifting power to the stage, opening September 18th with a limited-time 2-for-1 offer for opening weekend.

The limited-time offer is available for the Friday, September 18th and Saturday, September 19th performances, with the code VENUS. The promotion runs until September 7th, 2026.

Written by David Ives, Venus in Fur follows an actress who unexpectedly arrives to audition for a director working on an adaptation of a classic novel. As the rehearsal progresses, the lines between actor and character begin to blur, with the balance of power shifting along the way.

The production combines elements of psychological thriller, dark comedy and theatrical mystery, keeping audiences guessing through its conclusion.

The opening weekend performances are:

• Friday, September 18th at 7:30pm, Opening Night

• Saturday, September 19th at 7:30pm

The full performance schedule also includes a 1:30pm matinee on Sunday, September 20th, followed by performances September 24th through 27th and October 1st through 3rd. The October 3rd performance is Closing Night.

The cast features Carissa Kaye and John Austin, with Lisa Dixon directing.

Regular ticket prices are $30 for adults, $27 for seniors and $20 for students.

Six Future Business Leaders Graduate From Community Futures Peterborough's 2026 Summer Company Program

Six aspiring entrepreneurs have graduated from Community Futures Peterborough’s (CFP) 2026 Summer Company Program, turning their business ideas into thriving businesses.

“Small businesses play a vital role in keeping our local communities vibrant and growing, and seeing students step up to launch their own enterprises right here in Peterborough-Kawartha is inspiring,” said Dave Smith, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP. “The Summer Company program equips these future leaders with practical skills, confidence, and real-world experience. I congratulate all six graduates on a successful season and look forward to seeing where their drive takes them next.”

After graduation, the students showcased their businesses before local leaders and community partners.

“Community Futures Peterborough gave me a sense of community and belonging throughout my summer. There is such a wide range of knowledge and expertise from the team; whenever I had any sort of curiosity, I always knew where to find answers,” said Rielle MacDougall, Lake Safe Swim Lessons owner. “Having a team to back you up through a solopreneurship journey made starting a business feel a lot more manageable.”

The program gave students hands-on experience launching and operating their own businesses while building valuable entrepreneurial, financial, marketing, and leadership skills.

“The Summer Company program allows students to do more than work a summer job. It gives them the opportunity to explore what it takes to be a leader, make decisions, solve problems, and build something of their own,” said Allison Adam, CFP entrepreneurship officer. “These students worked incredibly hard to create their own summer jobs, taking their ideas from concept to operation and learning firsthand what it takes to run a business. They rose to the challenge and excelled, which speaks volumes about both their dedication and the impact this program can have on young people.”

Two Women Charged After Two Traffic Stops Made On the Same Vehicle

Two women are facing charges after two traffic stops with the same vehicle on Tuesday morning.

At roughly 11:30 a.m., a Traffic Unit officer was on general patrol when the Automated License Plate Reader alerted them to a suspended driver. The officer conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the driver and a female passenger. During the interaction, the officer learned that the passenger was also a suspended driver.

A 64-year-old Peterborough woman was ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act for:

• Drive while suspended x2 (two different reasons)

• Driving with no insurance

• Driving without a valid permit

• Failure to surrender permit for motor vehicle

As the officer was completing their notes, they observed the passenger get into the driver's side of the vehicle and drive away. The officer activated their emergency lights as the vehicle was not insured and conducted a second traffic stop on the same vehicle. During a search after arrest, officers located a satchel containing an expandable baton and a can of pepper spray. 

A 35-year-old Toronto woman was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

• Possession of Weapon contrary to Prohibition Order

• Driving while under suspension X2 (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused is currently bound by a prohibition order with the following condition: to not possess any weapons as defined by the Criminal Code.

The accused was released on an undertaking with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 17.

City of Peterborough Releases List of Candidates Available For 2026 Municipal and School Board Election

The City of Peterborough has posted a certified list of candidates for the 2026 municipal and school board election, available online.

Starting Tuesday, voters can use the City’s Online Voter Services portal to check their registration, add or update their information, find their voting location, and see the candidates for their ballot. 

Online voting will be available beginning Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. Online voting ends at 8 p.m. on Oct. 26.  

Advance in-person voting will take place on Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Healthy Planet Arena, 911 Monaghan Rd. 

On Election Day, Oct. 26, in-person voting will be available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at ward-specific voting locations. 

Voter notification cards will be received by mail in early October and will include information about online voting and in-person voting options.
