Peterborough Petes Hosting Annual Teddy Bear Toss Game This Thursday

The Peterborough Petes are sending their plushies flying as they host their annual Teddy Bear Toss game against the Windsor Spitfires on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Last year, 1571 donations were collected in support of the Move 99.7 and Pure Country 105 Christmas Toy Drive, in support of the Salvation Army’s Annual Christmas Appeal. Photo courtesy of David Pickering and the Peterborough Petes.

The team asks fans to bring donations to the game, including stuffed animals, toques, gloves, and socks. Participating fans can throw their donations onto the ice after Peterborough scores its first goal.

The donations will then be collected and counted by Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre, and the proceeds will be donated in support of the Pete 99.7 and KX105 Christmas Toy Drive and the Salvation Army’s Annual Christmas Appeal. Participating fans are asked to place their donations in a clear plastic bag to prevent them from being damaged on the ice. Fans who cannot attend but wish to donate can drop off their donations at the Petes Store prior to the game.

Rexall is selling stuffed bears in the PMC lobby before the game. Both small ($10) and large ($20) bears are available. Net proceeds from each bear sold will go towards the Rexall Care Network, in support of local food banks. Fans can purchase bears at both Peterborough Rexall locations before Thursday.

Peterborough Petes Snap Flint Firebirds Point Streak With 3-2 Victory

The Flint Firebirds had their 12-game point streak snapped at the hands of the Peterborough Petes as the home team won 3-2 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The first goal did not occur until late in the period. Peterborough had an outnumbered attack and Adam Levac fed Adam Novotný for a tip-in to give the Petes a 1-0 lead.

Peterborough built on their lead in the second as they were on the power play. Matthew Soto was the recipient of a long breakout pass, gained the offensive zone and found Aiden Young. The latter stickhandled the puck then sniped it past Flint’s goaltender Mason Vaccari for a 2-0 lead after two periods

The final frame saw Flint not go down without a fight. Darels Uljanskis scored for the Firebirds less than five minutes into the period to make it a 2-1 game. Peterborough had a little déjà vu as Levac from behind the net and fed Novotný for another goal to restore the Petes’s two-goal lead. Darian Anderson scored on the power play to bring Flint back to within one goal. Petes goaltender Esston Rye stood tall for the next 7:39, he stopped 28 of 30 shots to help preserve the win and break Flint’s point streak with the 3-2 win.

The Petes hit the road Friday to Kitchener to take on the Rangers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

Peterborough Petes Sputter In Close Low-Scoring Affair to North Bay

In a game where goals were few, the Petes ended up on the wrong side of the score, falling 3-1 to the North Bay Battalion at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the opening period. Petes goaltender Easton Rye stopped 15 shots while North Bay netminder Mike McIvor made eight saves.

The ice was broken as North Bay scored on the power play with some tic-tac-toe passing that led to a point-blank one-timer from Ethan Procyszyn for a 1-0 lead from the visitors. Peterborough countered five minutes later as Matthew Soto won a board battle in the offensive zone from behind the net. He centred a pass to Braydon McCallum who scored for a 1-1 game after two periods.

Just over halfway through the third frame, Lirim Amidovski let a wrist shot go from outside the faceoff circle. Rye made the stop but a juicy rebound came to Kaden Pitre who scored on the wide-open net to give North Bay a lead. Peterborough tried to battle back but the visitors tacked on an empty-net goal for a 3-1 victory.

The Petes head south of the border to take on the Erie Otters this Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Erie Insurance Arena

Trent Excalibur Men’s Soccer Player Named U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian

Trent University business administration student, John Moncada of the Excalibur men’s varsity soccer team, has earned U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian status which is awarded to the top-performing student-athletes across Canadian universities.

“This is a historic milestone for John and for our men’s soccer program to be recognized on the national stage,” said Nathan McFadden, Trent director of Athletics and Recreation. “Earning U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian status is a testament not only to John’s high-end skill and work ethic, but also to the strong belief head coach Grant Purdy has in his players to showcase their talent early in their career. We’re proud of John’s remarkable first campaign, the program’s best season ever, and what it signals for the future of Excalibur soccer.”

Moncada led the Ontario University Athletics Association with 14 goals in 11 games, the most ever by an Excalibur men's soccer player in their first season. He is also first nationally in goals and tied for first in total points across all of U SPORTS men's soccer.

His rookie season placed him second on Trent’s all-time goals list, tying Aaron Chia (‘15). His teammate, Leo Frans, holds the top honour with 18 career goals in three years with the Excalibur.

“What stands out about John is just how humble he is. He never lets ego dominate what he wants for the team and is supportive of every player,” said Grant Purdy, head coach of Excalibur men’s soccer. “On the field, he has a special gift; a sense of where the ball is going to be, which allows him to beat defenders and score. This recognition is a reflection of what John is capable of and how far the men’s soccer program has come. I believe the best is yet to come.”

Moncada’s accomplishment marks the first time a Trent Excalibur men's soccer player has received the national honour and the fourth All-Canadian selection in Trent Athletics history. Earlier this fall, he was also named the OUA East Division Most Valuable Player and an OUA First Team All-Star.

“Being named a U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian means everything to me.  I came into the season with a bit of a chip on my shoulder, ready to turn some heads and the environment here at Trent made it all possible,” said Moncada. “The coaches giving me the opportunity and my teammates believing in me made it fun to play and pushed me to succeed. To know my name will be in the Trent history books is a special feeling. Looking ahead, my goal is to help the team make a playoff run and win a championship.”

He joins an exclusive list that includes Kristine Boyles from women's rugby, who earned First Team All-Canadian honours in both 2007 and 2009 and Thaddeus Bolton from men's soccer, who was named a Second Team All-Canadian in 2009.
