Lost Luggage Leaves Fleming Fire Combat Member With No Equipment At National Championships

Liam Cole, a Fleming College graduate and member of the Fleming Fire Combat Team, arrived in Calgary on Wednesday for the National FireFit Championships, only to find that his luggage - with all of his equipment - had gone missing.

“He has worked so hard to be in this,” said Linda Langlois, Cole’s grandmother. “This is his first time travelling by himself, he’s 19, it’s 2:30 in the morning in the airport, he’s scrambling.”

The competition began on Wednesday and will run until Sunday.

Cole qualified to compete in Calgary after crushing his personal best at the Oshawa Regionals in August.

To compete in these competitions competitors must wear full bunker gear which they supply themselves.

“He’s been borrowing gear from anyone who isn’t competing, which will cause issues when group races begin,” said Adam Cole, Liam’s father.

In addition to not having equipment for his competition, Cole is also missing all of his personal items and is now dealing with the stress of potentially losing thousands of dollars of equipment.

“Liam went into that first day of competition with five hours of sleep, no gear and no clothes.”

Adam says he has been back and fourth with Lynx Airlines since Liam landed in Calgary, trying to locate his luggage. He waited on hold for over an hour, spoke with a representative for two hours and has still received little to no help.

He has also has been in contact with the Calgary Airport, who he says has been helpful but unsuccessful in getting answers and has spoken with Toronto Pearson Airport with no success.

“It’s hard to understand that they can’t even give us an idea of where it was forgotten or the last time it was seen,” said Adam. “Luggage is tagged, it gets scanned, how does no one know where it is?”

Petes And Emterra Partner To Host Clean Community Cup Encouraging Minor Hockey Teams To Be Environmentally Conscious

The Peterborough Petes have partnered with Emterra to host the 2022-23 Clean Community Cup to encourage local minor hockey teams to make a positive impact on the environmental well being of their community.

Teams in the City of Peterborough and surrounding areas are encouraged to come together and find creative ways to help improve the communities in which they live, work, and play. Teams can support this initiative by doing things like picking up garbage, recycling, and promoting good environmental habits in their communities. 

The team that shows the strongest initiative, creativity, and positive environmental impact on their community will be chosen as the winner.

The prize includes $500 cash to be used by the winners on team apparel and operations, and a team photo featured on advertising at the PMC. The winning team will be chosen by the Petes and presented with a cheque at a Petes home game on March 14, 2023 at the PMC.

Y Drive Kicks Off New Charitable Foundation With Dunk Tank On Saturday

Y Drive launched the Y Drive Foundation by hosting a dunk tank in Peterborough Square on Saturday.

“The foundation was created in memory of Dani Sinacori who passed away in August. As a mother of 3 and teacher to many, her life was sports, teaching and family,” said Y Drive in a Facebook post. “The foundation will be geared towards school breakfast programs, youth sports and helping our neighbours when they need it.”

Participants had the chance to dunk the likes of:

  • Diane Therrien (Mayor of Peterborough)

According to Erica Young of Y Drive, $1160 was raised from the event and additional donations.

International Overdose Awareness Day Memorial Event Commemorates Addicts; Bring Awareness and Reduce Stigma Of Addiction

An International Overdose Awareness Day memorial service honouring those lost to drug overdose was held by Moms Stop The Harm Peterborough at the Silver Bean Café on Wednesday afternoon.

During the event, stories of how speakers’ loved ones were lost or affected by drug addiction, claiming that there should not be a stigma for it.

Between January 1 and July 31, 2022, Peterborough paramedics responded to 234 suspected opioid-related 911 calls and drugs were responsible for 343 emergency department visits according to Peterborough Public Health (PPH).

“The drug poisoning crisis is taking a significant and unacceptable toll on Peterborough’s region and community members,” said Dr. Thomas Piggott, PPH medical officer of health. Drug poisonings are a public health issue. We know we need to do more to prevent further harms and deaths.”

This year, 31 people are suspected to have died as a result of drug poisonings with five of these deaths happening over a 10-day period this month according to the same report.

Photos: Peterborough Community Aids United Way's "Backpacks for Success" Campaign

Over 40 volunteers from several organizations stuffed 690 school bags with back-to-school supplies for United Way Peterborough & District’s "Backpacks for Success" at Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute on Tuesday.

Organizations such as TD Canada Trust, BMO, Rotary Club of Peterborough, Scotiabank, East Peterborough Lions Club, Gamma Tau Master Sorority and student volunteers all chipped in throughout the day to fill the backpacks.

The bags went to high schools and elementary schools throughout Peterborough County that go as far as Apsley. Items such as pencil crayons, glue, paper, pens, math kits, calculators and pencil cases were among the donated supplies.

The United Way received $7,000 through Peterborough Cares’ ‘Stand With Tim’ campaign, $1,000 from the Peterborough Police service board and $500 from the Police senior team.

Peterborough Petes Seeking Breakthrough Performances For Upcoming Training Camp

The Peterborough Petes began the season’s training camp looking for the team’s next breakout star with physical testing and assessments at Hybrid Sports on Tuesday.

Expectations are high for the players in the camp, both returning and new. Several athletes look to make their mark and land a full-time spot with the Petes for the coming season, ‘opportunity’ seemed to be the word of the day.

“Our message at the opening meeting today was that there is opportunity,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager. “This week on the ice, during scrimmages and practices, an individual player has the chance to turn that word, ‘opportunity,’ into action.”

Smiling faces, handshakes and hugs were spotted on the players throughout the opening day of the training camp. There were 58 players that showed up to prove themselves and make a roster spot. The facility training was a welcome change from last year when COVID-19 forced additional precautions and private training sessions.

"We have made a lot of strides with the public health and public safety to the point where now we're pretty much back to normal," said Oke. "We still have to make sure that we are diligent and follow various protocols. Certainly, this year feels a lot more of a normal style of training camp and we're just simply excited to get going."

'Discover Peterborough Bingo' Invites New Trent Students To Explore The City

Trent University, Peterborough DBIA and Peterborough & The Kawarthas Tourism have teamed up for a second year to host ‘Discover Peterborough Bingo’ for new Trent University students.

This interactive scavenger hunt features stops at local shops, cafes, and restaurants in the downtown to help orient and connect incoming students with their home away from home.

"Trent students have a significant impact on our community, adding to the cultural and economic vitality of the city," said Alison Scholl, manager of Community Relations at Trent University. "Partnering with the DBIA and PKT to host Discover Peterborough Bingo is just one of the ways Trent supports the community, and one of the ways the community in turn supports our students. This is a fun and unique way to help our incoming students get to know and see themselves at home in Peterborough."

Between September 5 and October 7, Trent students will complete activities at a number of places downtown and on campus. Once two lines are completed on their Bingo card, students will be entered to win one of four prize packs, which include a $500 Downtown Boro gift card, and prizes from Trent, PKT and local businesses.

Mike Watt, owner of Flavour Fashion downtown, says this will have a great impact on local businesses.

“As a small business owner you wear a thousand different hats,” he said. “A huge part of our job is just drawing people in, so it’s great to have people in our corner that are encouraging people to shop locally.”

Bingo cards can be picked up by students at Residence Service Centres (LEC 211and GCS 212), Trent Central Student Association and at Trent International and College offices.
