Two Stunt Driving Charges Issued Over the Weekend

Traffic Services Unit Officers of the Peterborough Police Service issued two stunt driving charges under the Highway Traffic Act this past weekend.

On Friday at 8:44 p.m., an officer on general patrol spotted a vehicle being driven on Lansdowne Street near Clonsilla Avenue at a high rate of speed. The driver's speed was excessive and the maneuvers made while passing vehicles endangered other motorists. The observed driving met the criteria for Stunt Driving: Race a motor vehicle. 

As a result of the investigation, a 35-year-old man was charged with:

• Perform Stunt - Race a Motor Vehicle (Highway Traffic Act)

The driver received a 30-day license suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. 

On Saturday at 12:16 a.m., an officer on general patrol spotted a vehicle being driven at 99km/hr in a posted 50 km/hr zone on Lansdowne Street in the area of Monaghan Road and was locked in on radar at 96 km/hr. The officer conducted a vehicle stop and as a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old male was charged with:

• Speeding (Highway Traffic Act)

• Perform Stunt - Speeding by 40 or more km/hr in a zone that is less than 80km/hr (Highway Traffic Act)

The driver received a 30-day license suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

Bridgenorth Man Charged With Driving the Wrong Way

A 26-year-old Bridgenorth man is facing charges after driving the wrong way on Rubidge Street which turns into Park Street on Friday night.

At roughly 10:50 p.m., an officer on general patrol in the Park Street North and Albert Street area spotted a vehicle driving the wrong way down Rubidge Street where it meets Park Street. The officer turned around and initiated a traffic stop after observing signs of impairment by the driver. However, the driver refused to provide a breath sample.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Failure or refusal to comply with demand

• Drive wrong way - one-way traffic (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 27.

Two People From Dec. 6 TVM Towers Homicide Arrested; One Suspect Still Being Sought

Two people wanted in connection with a homicide on Dec. 6 at TVM Towers (Brock Towers) have been arrested and are in custody with one suspect being sought by police, reported on Friday afternoon.

Officers with the Peterborough Police Service Investigative Services Unit and Belleville Police Service Tactical Team executed a warrant at a residence in Belleville on Thursday. They arrested 28-year-old Peter Pople of Peterborough and charged with second-degree Murder. He was held in custody and appeared in court on Friday.

Also, at around 8 p.m. on Thursday, 29-year-old Kaya Coughlin was located and arrested at Trinity Community Centre (Reid Street and Simcoe Street) and charged with manslaughter. She was also held in custody and appeared in court on Friday.

A third person, 44-year-old Michael Waterman, is still being sought by police.

Police are actively seeking information regarding his whereabouts.

Stuart Betts, Peterborough Police chief, released the following statement:

“I would like to recognize the tenacity and exceptional work of our officers in locating these two suspects. It has required hundreds of hours of investigation to ensure these individuals were located and taken into custody.

I also extend my appreciation and thanks to the Belleville Police Service for their support in helping our Investigators locate and arrest a suspect in their city.

Although this was an isolated incident, it is never-the-less, strikes at the heart of public safety, and a community’s feelings of being safe. Locating, arresting and bring those believed responsible before the court has been a top priority and is critically important to the victim's family and our community as a whole.”

Peterborough Man Arrested After Driving With Suspended License and Providing a Fake Name

A 35-year-old Peterborough man is facing multiple charges after a traffic stop including giving a fake name and driving with a suspended license on Thursday afternoon.

At around noon, a Traffic Unit officer observed a vehicle in the area of Water Street and McDonnel Street. They initiated a traffic stop after learning the vehicle had an unconfirmed insurance status.

During the investigation, it was determined that the driver provided the officer with a false name and date of birth and was currently suspended.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Obstruct Police Officer

• Operation while prohibited under the criminal code

• Driving while under suspension (HTA)

• Driver while under suspension – while suspended under HTA sec 41/42 (HTA)

The accused was issued an appearance notice and a 45-day vehicle impoundment notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 27.

Mississauga Man Arrested For Stunt Driving After Going 96 In a 50 Km/H Zone

A 61-year-old Mississauga man is facing stunt driving charges after going 46 km/h over the limit on Wednesday morning.

At roughly 11:30 a.m., an officer from the Traffic Unit was in the area of Lily Lake Road and clocked a vehicle going 96km/hr in a posted 50km/hr zone.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and the driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

• Stunt Driving (Highway Traffic Act)

• Speeding (Highway Traffic Act)

The driver was issued a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

The driver is scheduled to attend court in February.

Peterborough Woman and Man Arrested After Being Found Wanted On Warrants

A Peterborough woman and man wanted on warrants were located and taken into custody on Tuesday.

At roughly 1:30 p.m., officers with the Community F.I.R.S.T Unit were on general patrol in the Monaghan Road and Romaine Street area when they spotted a woman wanted on warrants in a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

A 41-year-old Peterborough woman was arrested on the strength of warrants for obstructing a peace officer, failing to comply with an appearance notice, and failing to attend court after appearing.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., officers with the Community F.I.R.S.T Unit were on general patrol in the area of Wolfe Street and Park Street when they saw a man in the snow. They went to check on him and realized he was wanted on warrants for break and enter, failure to comply with probation and failure to comply with an appearance notice. 

The 25-year-old Peterborough man was arrested on the strength of the warrants. 

Both people were held in custody and appeared in court on Wednesday.

Peterborough Woman With Suspended License Arrested For Drug Trafficking and Driving Under Suspension

A 46-year-old Peterborough woman is facing drug trafficking charges after a traffic stop Monday morning.

At roughly 9:30 a.m., an officer on general patrol conducted a traffic stop in the area of Rubidge Street and Charlotte Street. The officer learned she was a suspended driver and took her into custody.

During a search of the vehicle after arrest, officers located and seized:

• 7.9 grams of crystal methamphetamine

• 166.8 grams of cocaine

• 85.2 grams of green fentanyl

• Approximately $8,500 in Canadian currency

She was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5000 - in Canada

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine x2

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking-Opioid (other than heroin) Fentanyl

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine

• Driving while under suspension (Highway Traffic Act)

• Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Monday.0000000000

Three Suspects Wanted From Dec. 6 Homicide At TVM Towers

Three suspects are wanted in connection with a homicide that occurred at TVM Towers (Brock Towers) on Dec. 6.

At roughly 6 a.m., officers were called to TVM Towers where a man with severe head injuries was located in an apartment. Despite life-saving efforts, the 33-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Through investigation, Peterborough Police Service has identified three suspects and warrants for their arrest have been issued.

Wanted for second-degree murder:

Thirty-two-year-old Dominick Rivers of Peterborough has been arrested in connection with the homicide.

He was arrested and charged with:

• Accessory After the Fact to Murder

• Fail to Comply with Probation

• Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code x6

Rivers appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded into custody.

Officers continue to search for the wanted people.

Havelock Man With a Knife Arrested After Attempting to Enter Ambulance While Patient Was Being Treated

A 32-year-old Havelock man is facing weapons charges after attempting to enter an ambulance with a knife while a patient was being treated on Saturday evening.

At roughly 7:15 p.m., officers were called to the area of Reid Street and Simcoe Street about a disturbance. Officers learned that a man had attempted to get into an ambulance while paramedics were treating a patient. 

No one was injured. The man then fled to a courtyard and started throwing rocks.  Police located him and took him into custody.  During a search after arrest, officers seized a spring-assisted knife with a five-inch blade.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Unauthorized Possession of Weapon

• Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

The accused is currently bound by a weapons prohibition to not possess any prohibited firearm, restricted firearm, prohibited weapon, prohibited device or ammunition for life.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 20.

Peterborough Man Arrested For Weapon and Drug Possession After Police Spotted Him Wearing Brass Knuckles

A 45-year-old Peterborough man is facing several charges including weapon and drug possession after an incident on Thursday afternoon.

At roughly 3 p.m., Community F.I.R.S.T officers were proactively in the area of Reid Street and Simcoe Street when they spotted an individual with brass knuckles. The man was taken into custody as they are a prohibited weapon.

During a search after arrest, officers seized:

• Brass knuckles

• 20 Dilaudid (Hydromorphone) pills

• 3.1grams of Crack Cocaine

• 6.2grams of Fentanyl

• Scales

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Unauthorized Possession of Weapon

• Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Opioid (Fentanyl)

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Cocaine

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Hydromorphone

• Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused is currently subject to a weapons prohibition prohibiting possession of any weapon as defined in the Criminal Code and to a probation order with the condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. 

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.
