Bob Hayes recently dropped by Titles Bookstore in Peterborough to talk about his new book, Wolves of the Yukon.
Bob, who is an alumnus of Trent University, described the writing process as "a full year of writing that took ten years to write." Bob left Peterborough in 1975 and went to the Yukon to research and write about Yukon wolves. This book is a compilation of 25 years worth of knowledge as a wolf biologist.
When writing the book, Bob felt he had to tell stories to keep the reader engaged but found it difficult with his past of writing scientific papers. But he managed to pull it off, and Bob gives thanks to his family for helping him through it as it truly was a joint effort: His family helped him research the book, his daughter edited it, his brother provided the drawings, and a friend of his daughter provided the maps.
Drop in to Titles Bookstore to pick up a copy of Wolves of the Yukon.

Snowblink with Eons
The Cannery Art Centre
Thursday, March 17, 2011
While the downtown core rocked with wild St. Patrick's Day revellers, there was a lovely respite of subdued rock and roll to be found at The Cannery. Two bands shared the stage for some inspiring
music. First up was new, Toronto-based outfit Eons (pictured at left), a splinter band of Bruce Peninsula. This three piece managed to evoke the best of British traditional with a modern pop sheen.
Headliners Snowblink, a two guitar attack, also from Toronto, though transplanted from Los Angeles, married layers of guitar and two part harmonies into a fit of bright rock and roll goodness. This band is on the brink of a run of North American shows supporting Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Toronto indie darling Timber Timbre.
With a backdrop of wildly dressed bar-hoppers and periodic lightening shows, this was a night to remember.

This weekend is the Peterborough Home & Outdoor Show, with more than 125 exhibitors. And Habitat for Humanity women will be "virtually building" a house at the home show—a first-of-its-kind at this show.

The recent Women of Aviation Worldwide Week was an opportunity for women to be able to fly in a small aircraft who had never done so before. As soon as I heard that Peterborough was taking part, I knew instantly it was something I wanted to do. So on Saturday morning, I was so excited that I arrived at the Peterborough Airport well ahead of my 9 a.m. scheduled flight time.
It was a dreary, cloudy day, and at first I wasn't sure whether we would even be able to fly. My nerves were kicking in as I signed the waiver—and pleasantly questioned my pilot, Hubert Wren, on his credentials.

We soon headed out to the tarmac, where Hubert assisted us getting settled and buckled into the four-seater Cessna. Hubert was great at explaining all the steps involved to prepare the aircraft for takeoff, and talking about what all the dials and buttons are for in the cockpit.

It wasn't long before we were zooming down the runway, and up we went. I have been lucky enough to travel quite a bit over the years, but it was surreal to be in the front passenger seat of such a very small aircraft. My nerves began to ease, and I soon began to enjoy the sights below. We flew as far as Rice Lake for about a thirty minute flight in total. I was so grateful to have had this opportunity to see our city from this bird's-eye perspective.
In total, 51 women participated on Saturday in the flights from Peterborough Airport—there were three pilots who volunteered their time—and plans are already in the works for next year's Women of Aviation Worldwide Week, which takes place March 5 to 11.
