DBIA Featured Post: Curry Village

curryvillage1.jpeg

If you’re looking for an Indian food experience in the city of Peterborough that offers dishes for every palate, Curry Village is your destination. With dishes ranging from very mild to extremely hot, the restaurant caters to absolutely every range of flavour.

Mohammed Islam is one of the most engaging owners you will meet in this town. He realizes that not everyone can handle Indian cuisine, which is why he has created a menu that offers a little bit of everything. With the decision to broaden their menu, he has helped the restaurant become one of the longest serving in the downtown core. Indeed, later this summer, Curry Village will be celebrating its 19th year in the heart of our city at 306 George St N.

When you enter the friendly confines of Curry Village, you almost enter a different world. Mr. Islam wants to create a real Indian experience for his customers, who he says are very loyal. From place settings to statues and art work to music, you know the restaurant has gone all out to expose people to the culture they cook for.

As noted, Curry Village has an extensive menu. From mild to medium to hot, the top flight chefs can create any flavour the taste buds desire. They have vegetable dishes to go along with plates derived from all areas of the country. As a suggestion, the Apple Chicken Curry and Mushroom Biryanys are can’t miss choices.

Curry Village is renowned, with recommendations that have come in from publications such as the The Globe and Mail, The New York Times and Toronto Life. Mr. Islam is proud of these recommendations but is more focused on his local community than anything else. The restaurant has been in the same location for almost two decades now and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

The restaurant is happy to have taken part in the Taste of Downtown celebration this year, as well as offering its cuisine at the very successful Canada Day Multicultural event at Del Crary Park—which he believes broadened his customer base by offering his food to people who have never tried it before.

Curry Village prospering for 19 years is a testament to its importance and presence in the downtown. If you haven’t had the experience of eating there yet, we highly suggest you do!

Sign Of The Times? Scavenging From City Blue Boxes Has Reached All-Time High

From a city release today...
Screen shot 2013-07-05 at 1.25.51 PM.png

Scavenging from City blue boxes has reached an all-time high. In particular, unauthorized individuals are removing aluminum cans from blue boxes. Homeowners and scavengers should be aware that once material is set out to the boulevard, it becomes the property of the City.

To counteract scavenging, the City will more rigorously enforce section 594.2.9 of the Garbage Collection By-law which prohibits scavenging.

Revenue from the sale of aluminium that the City collects from blue boxes helps to keep our recycling programs affordable.  Homeowners are asked to hold their blue boxes until the morning of their collection and discourage unauthorized individuals from removing their contents.

Please contact the City’s Waste Management Davison at 705-742-7777 Ext. 1657 if you have any questions or concerns.

This information is also available on the City of Peterborough website at www.peterborough.ca

Freedom 55 Financial Charity Golf Classic Unites Community in Support of Mental Health

Screen shot 2013-07-05 at 9.34.34 AM.png

Rallying their teams to help raise awareness in support of mental health, the Freedom 55 Financial Peterborough Charity Golf Classic takes place at Peterborough Golf & Country Club on July 18th.

Now in its seventh year, the tournament will raise money to help support mental health education and programming provided by the Peterborough Networked Family Health Team. Support initiatives of the mental health program include free counselling/therapy in anxiety, depression, and other life stresses, information and/or referral to community resources and evidence-based trauma treatments and group therapy.

Mike Judson, local weather analyst at CHEX Television, recognizes the importance of ensuring people getting help when it’s needed most. “Many people still don’t understand that mental health issues can be the driving force leading people to a life of homelessness,” says Judson. "It’s events like this golf tournament that help raise awareness, allowing for enlightened conversations to be had in our community. I am honoured to have been asked to be a part of the tournament.”

Tournament Registration and Information is available at Gphsf.ca or by calling Hilary Law at Freedom 55 Financial 705-745-1324 ext. 204 or email Hilary.law@f55f.com.

PSA: Do Not Ever Leave Your Kids Unattended In A Heated Car

So, most people know enough not to leave their pets in heated cars (exhibit A of how quickly cars heat up is here, and exhibit B is here). But what about leaving kids unattended? Well our editor Neil Morton tweeted yesterday about his wife's encounter with a father at the LCBO on Lansdowne Street on Wednesday. The dad left his toddlers in his car on a sweltering July day while he went in to get booze (there have been several recent incidents of kids dying from being left in hot cars). Neil's wife saw the kids in the back of the car strapped into their car seats and knocked on the window and asked if they were OK but they were too young to communicate, and one she noticed had begun to sweat profusely. Minutes later, she tracked the dad down and he didn't see a problem with it, and their conversation—with bystanders looking on—got, well, heated, in the parking lot. WTF. See tweets below and some of responses.

So yeah, if you need booze that bad or whatever, bring your kids with you. Don't leave your kids alone in a car. Period.

PTBOPics: Strawberry Festival At Peterborough Wednesday Market

If you had the chance today to stop by the Peterborough Downtown Farmers' Market, they were hosting their annual Strawberry Festival. Strawberries were everywhere and in everything—lemonade, jam, baked goods, etc!  Also, snap peas continue and the first sight of raspberries could also be seen!
