Recruitment Event At Flying Colours Corp. Passes With Flying Colours

Flying Colours Corp., which is celebrating 30 years in business, held its first Peterborough recruitment event on the weekend to attract new and existing talent to the expanding North American maintenance, repair, overhaul and completions company.

More than 230 people sent resumes prior to the event, and of those 50 face-to-face interviews were held with pre-screened candidates. In addition, more than 110 walk-in candidates attended and met with human resource and technical professionals to discuss opportunities.

Existing employees at this privately owned, family-run company explained their roles, management responded to specific company questions, and the HR team accepted resumes and organized interviews.

“We’re optimistic that we found some great candidates and will be working over the next week or two to make offers to some of those interviewed,” says Ian Ross, director of human resources, Flying Colours Corp.

“It was obvious from the look of surprise on some of the faces that they were impressed by the scale of our operation here and our capabilities in terms of program quality and complexity,” adds Ross. “As well as finding some great new talent, I think we clarified to many just what we do.”

A combination of existing and new roles were highlighted as Flying Colours plans to fill in excess of 50 openings in its paint, avionics, maintenance, interiors, cabin installation and upholstery departments by the mid-summer.

The Market Hall Clock Is Now Digital, Includes Emoji To Brighten Your Day

UPDATE: Happy April Fool’s Day!!

———————-

After adding LED lights to the iconic Market Hall clock back in January of 2018, further upgrades were completed over the weekend to convert all four faces to digital.

If you look up on your drive to work in downtown Peterborough, you might not notice that the entire face of the clock is a screen… but you will be sure to do a double take when an emoji is smiling down at you.

Here’s a quote from a press release…

“We had so much positive feedback from our themed coloured lights that this year we wanted to take it one step further!”

The digital faces also replace the old clockwork machinery that frequently broke down, according to a press release…

“While the new screens were pricey to install, they are rated to work all the way to -40. That's something that we come to expect from our Canadian winters. We think they will pay for themselves vs. the costly repairs of the previous machinery.”

Since it is digital, various emoji can be shown to create a playful vibe downtown while still showing the current time.

We Aren't Some Best Kept Secret Anymore: Peterborough Is The Fastest Growing City In All Of Canada

The rest of the country is figuring out what Peterborough residents have known for a long time: We live in a great communty with all the amenities—and rivers, lakes and green space all around us.

Indeed, Peterborough was listed as Canada's fastest growing city by Statistics Canada with a 3.1 per cent increase, followed by Kitchener-Waterloo at 2.6, then both Ottawa and Windsor tied at 2.5.

Statistics Canada

According to Statistics Canada, more than seven in 10 Canadians live in an urban area—and the five fastest growing census metropolitan areas are all in Ontario, with Peterborough being Numero Uno.

After years of planning, design and construction, the A-Wing was officially opened on Wednesday (March 27th) at Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough.

Preparing graduates for the evolving workplace was the driving force behind the newly renovated wing. The updated space will serve more than 3,000 students, and the facility will ensure programs continue to provide effective training to meet the evolving labour market needs.

“This is a tremendous milestone for the college and the updated A-Wing now better provides opportunities for our students to prepare for today’s dynamic workforce,” says Maureen Adamson, President, Fleming College.

“The multi-purpose facility provides increased capacity for on-campus work-integrated learning opportunities and great access to simulations for task-based and scenario-based learning. This is another way Fleming is committed to producing the preferred graduate.”

Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area Launches Digital Main Street Service Squad

Starting in April, the innovative Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) will be leading the local Digital Main Street initiative with a Digital Service Squad to help main street small businesses improve their online capabilities.

The DBIA received a $10,000 grant from Digital Main Street as well as support from Community Futures Peterborough and the DBIA’s own resources to establish a Digital Service Squad to help small businesses in the downtown area enhance their use of digital tools and techniques to better promote and sell online.

The Squad will see a trained online specialist visit and assist businesses at no cost to help them set up Google Business, conduct a digital-readiness assessment, and apply for a $2,500 Digital Transformation Grant.

“This program is going to make our downtown more competitive and vibrant,” says DBIA Executive Director Terry Guiel. “We know we have to meet our customers where it’s most convenient for them. The beautiful bricks and mortar physical locations will always be the core of what makes downtown what it is, but we need to help our businesses make the best use of their resources for promotions, serving their customers, and reaching new markets.”

HOW IT WORKS

-> Digital Main Street helps improve how small businesses use digital tools and techniques to become more successful.

-> Today’s digital economy is vital to small businesses, and DMS will help them adopt new digital technologies from e-commerce and social media to back-office systems such as payroll and inventory.

Businesses within the downtown area will be introduced to the Digital Service Squad at the end of April.
