Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge Construction Delayed Until Spring 2022

Parks Canada announced on Friday that the re-opening of Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge to vehicle traffic is delayed until Spring 2022.

Screenshot.

The enhanced pedestrian access over the upper lock gates and its access paths will continue to remain open.

Earlier this fall, in order to assist with resolving concerns regarding the mechanical components, a new Consultant was brought onto the project to review and finalize the design, and refabrication of required components for the bridge.

At that point it was believed that a December 2021 bridge re-opening timeframe was still achievable. However, upon review by the new Consultant, Parks Canada was recently advised by the Contractor that they will be unable to meet this timeframe and that the re-opening of the bridge needed to be pushed to Spring 2022 due to issues mainly associated with the mechanical component re-fabrication.

Parks Canada is working closely with the Contractor to bring the project to its completion. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

The Bobcaygeon Swing Bridge project is part of the Government of Canada’s Federal Infrastructure Investment program.

In an effort to keep everyone safe and to properly enforce Covid-19 protocols, the ‘Loonies’ have moved off the street and into the warmth again this year, broadcasting the festivities live on FREQ 90.5 and OLDIES 96.7.

The bucket brigade will be collecting loose change up and down George Street, and the Lions Club will be collecting on the Hunter Street Bridge.

All buckets will be on 6-foot poles to remain socially distant. Online donations can also be made at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/3-loonies-on-the-street.

This year the Loonies on the Street event is aiming to raise $100,000 for Kawartha Food Share (KFS).

Helping to feed more than 7,700 people a month – 35% of whom are children – KFS also provides nutritious snacks for area school breakfast programs helping over 17,000 children get a healthy start to their school day. Additionally, KFS partners with community meal programs, such as those provided by Brock Mission, One Roof Diner, the Salvation Army and others, to provide a well-rounded outreach for our hungry neighbours.

Award-winning producer and esteemed entertainment lawyer, Dr. Stephen Stohn ’66, has been reappointed as chancellor of Trent University for a second three-year term.

“Over the last three years, and with great perseverance during COVID, Stephen has embodied the Trent spirit as chancellor and a champion for the University,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president of Trent. “During this time he has worn many hats – that of a judge presiding over mock trials with our Trent/Swansea dual law degree students, as an ambassador at alumni events, and a host of the Trent Talks series. We are truly fortunate to have another three years of his engagement with the entire Trent community.”

Stohn was sworn in as Trent University’s twelfth chancellor – and second alumni chancellor – in June 2019.

As host of Trent Talks – an interactive video series offering timely, reliable and thought-provoking information, he engaged with faculty members and virtual audiences exploring a range of topics including the environment, epidemiology, learning-at-home, and unmasking racism.

“As someone who was a student at Trent in its early days, it has been my delight to serve as Chancellor, some 50 years later, at a time when the University is truly manifesting its early vision and promise in such exciting ways,” said Stohn. “I look forward to continuing to serve, and to being able to spend even more time not just online but also directly, in-person and on-campus, as the pandemic recedes and all of us in the Trent community face a new future.”

Since graduating from Trent with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Economics in 1969, Dr. Stohn has been a pivotal supporter of Trent University, while enjoying an outstanding career in the entertainment industry as a lawyer, award-winning producer, songwriter and author.

Stohn is a 14-time Canadian Screen Award winner (formerly the Gemini Awards) who may be best known as the executive producer of the Degrassi television franchise. For his innumerable contributions to the industry, Mr. Stohn was inducted into the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame in 2011.

“Chancellor Stohn is an exceptional communicator and a shining example of the potential of a Trent education,” said Marilyn Burns, vice-president of Communications, Colleges and Enrolment at Trent. “His enthusiastic engagement with Trent’s colleges and special moments with Trent students brought an air of optimism during the pandemic. We are looking forward to seeing the creativity and engagement Chancellor Stohn brings to his next term.”

Stohn’s transformational philanthropic support for Trent has also been key in the development of several projects at the University, including a $1 million gift to make the new Student Centre a reality and establish Stohn Hall lecture theatre.

Mombassadors Partner With GPHSF to Raise Funds For Youth Mental Health

GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation, announced on Wednesday that they have partnered with the fundraising group the Mombassadors, with a joint goal of raising $100,000 for youth mental health programming provided by Peterborough Youth Services.

File photos.

Their first fundraiser will be an online Christmas auction that will run Dec. 8 through to Dec. 14.

The auction will feature toy bundles, gift cards, art pieces, lifestyle products and more thanks to many local businesses and Mombassador supporters.

“We are so excited to be working with GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation to support youth mental health in our community,” said Erin Marshall, Mombassadors. “GPHSF has a long history of supporting mental health programming in the community and together we are working to increase capacity and decrease wait times for children accessing mental health programming at Peterborough Youth Services. We know this pandemic has hit many children very hard and we want to ensure they have timely access to mental health programming and counselling.”

All funds raised from the Mombassadors’ Christmas auction will go directly to Peterborough Youth Services.

PYS are a non-profit social service agency that has been providing counselling and support to youth and their families locally for over forty years. With additional activities planned for the coming months from the Mombassadors and GPSHF, a goal of $100,000 will mean decreasing wait times and increasing capacity with PYS mental health programming.

“The Mombassadors are a powerhouse of passionate women dedicated to improving life for residents of our community and it is an honour to be their charitable partner,” said Laura Kennedy, Executive Director, GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation. “Youth Mental Health programming has been an area we have been funding for a number of years and we are excited to be setting a goal of $100,000 to raise with the Mombassadors.”

GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation, works to enable the Peterborough community to improve and increase their control over health, by funding initiatives that broaden equity and access to healthcare. As a non-profit Foundation their vision is to fund and support programs that positively impact the social determinants of health.
