The 1,000 square foot space spread across two floors, is made to remind visitors of a cottage, says Wiskel.

Online ordering is available on the website for both the Peterborough and Apsley Collections, each clearly identified.

Currently, the new location is open as a seasonal shop from May through October. Store hours are Tuesday–Saturday 11 a.m.–5 p.m. After May 21 hours expand to Monday–Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Grand opening weekend is May 21 and 22 with special goodie bags and draws for clothing.

This bursary is open to Peterborough high school students completing Grade 12 in 2022, who plan to undertake post-secondary studies at a provincially accredited institution in the visual arts during the 2022-23 academic year.

It is made possible with support from the Bierk Art Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough. This is the fourth time EC3 has provided this program of support for young artists.

The Bierk Art Fund Bursary Program will provide two bursaries of $1,000 each to graduating high school students in the City or County of Peterborough (including Curve Lake and Hiawatha First Nations) whose work demonstrates great promise and who have a serious commitment to pursuing further studies at the post-secondary level in the visual arts.

Students present their work (including, but not limited to portfolios) to a jury panel comprised of arts professionals. The two successful candidates will be announced immediately and celebrated at this year’s Mayor’s Luncheon for the Arts at the Peterborough Arts Awards on Sept. 30.

Eligible applicants must complete a Bierk Art Fund Bursary Application Form and send it back to bierkartfundbursaries@gmail.com before the deadline, May 26 at 11:59 p.m.

Applicants will receive a confirmation email from EC3’s Program Coordinator Gabe Pollock, with a designated appointment time and Zoom link to meet with the jury panel for a Portfolio Review during the week of May 30 to June 5.

Appointments are 30 minutes. The jury will choose two winners after meeting with all of the applicants. All applicants will be assessed on the same criteria.

Winners will be announced on June 7.

Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre Announces New Network To Share Best Conservation Practices With Public

The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) has announced the creation of the Ontario Turtle Conservation Network, a new initiative that will support knowledge gathering and sharing of best conservation practices with experts, and the public, in order to facilitate turtle protection work throughout the province.

The creation of the Ontario Turtle Conservation Network is being supported by Parks Canada through a recently signed three-year contribution agreement with the OTCC.

The creation of an Ontario Turtle Conservation Network will facilitate connections with other organizations across the province and help further engage the public in the work taking place at Parks Canada administered places.

With approximately 100 individual organizations working across the province to help protect turtles, the creation of the Ontario Turtle Conservation Network will help bring these organizations together with an internal platform for conservation professionals to collaborate and share knowledge and research actions and results.

“We are delighted to be working with Parks Canada on this new initiative, that will help connect turtle conservationists across the province, and facilitate collaboration and exchange of ideas,” said Dr. Sue Carstairs, Executive & Medical Director, Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. “We are very appreciative of their support, that made this project possible.”

Members of the public can access the Ontario Turtle Conservation Network here. Organizations or individuals in Ontario working on turtle conservation that are interested in joining the internal network for conservation professionals can request access by contacting: otcn@ontarioturtle.ca.

Fourcast Invites Community Members To Join Committee For New Consumption And Treatment Services Site

Fourcast has announced the formation of a new Community Liaison Committee (CLC) for the Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) Site at 220 Simcoe Street.

File Photo.

Once established, the CLC will foster and maintain positive relationships between local stakeholders and Fourcast, the agency that is operating the CTS. It will also provide a formal mechanism for members to collaboratively and respectfully resolve concerns, while raising awareness about the impact of the service in the community.

The committee will give neighbours, nearby businesses, and service providers an opportunity to contribute to the success of this life-saving service, says Forecast.

The application process for the committee is open now.

Fourcast Executive Director Donna Rogers emphasized the importance of engaging community members in the work of preventing drug poisoning deaths and related harms.

“Like any harm reduction initiative, the CTS has a role to play in promoting the health and safety of individuals and the community as a whole,” said Rogers. “As we respond to the devastating impact of the drug poisoning crisis in our region, it is vitally important that we continue to keep our neighbours informed and engaged in collaborative efforts to make our community a safe and inclusive place for all.”

The CLC will meet quarterly or as needed beginning in June 2022 and will continue to meet for a one year term ending in June 2023. Membership will include up to 17 individuals from neighbouring businesses, nearby residents, and service providers in addition to an independent process facilitator and notetaker.

Individuals interested in volunteering with the newly created Community Liaison Committee are encouraged to complete an application at https://forms.office.com/r/GzUhhzkJQn. Applications will be accepted until May 20.

Cottage Toys Opens New Location In Lakefield Just In Time For Summer

The new Cottage Toys location in Lakefield is officially open for business and is ready to outfit cottage goers and outdoor enthusiasts for the summer.

Owner Donna Rork says this new location has been a long time coming.

“I feel like the building is exactly the way I envisioned it 15 years ago when I bought this property,” she said. “So to have this dream of mine actually come true it’s like, pinch me.”

Since she purchased the property, Cottage Toys has been hosting pop up shops on location on long weekends in the summer.

Now, with a permanent location, Rork says she will be able to serve her community even better, with air conditioning being an added bonus.

Rork opened the new location on Saturday, and says the community welcomed her with open arms.

“When we opened the doors on Saturday people flooded in. I got all kinds of presents like wine, plants and flowers - everyone was so excited to see the new building.”

She notes that this addition to Lakefield should help other businesses in the area by drawing shoppers from communities near and far.

“I think it’s a great step for Lakefield,” she said. “Not only will we be hiring more people from the area but we’ll also be creating this destination for shopping that will have really positive spinoffs for businesses in the area. People travel from hours away, Kingston, Ottawa, Toronto, people will come from all over because there’s nothing else like this.”

Rork says they will remain open in the winter, and shift to selling different outdoor gear then.

An official grand opening ceremony will be taking place on Thursday.

Trent University Grants Three Recipients Inaugural Nursing Scholarship For Students Facing Financial Barriers

Kate McFarlane, Rachel Roots, and Hannah Raymond are the first-ever recipients of the Trent University Doreen (Larmer) Stewart Nursing Scholarship announced on Monday.

The new scholarship expands support for local students from rural or farming communities who face financial barriers to nursing education.

The scholarship was created through a $100,000 gift from Doreen J. Stewart, a retired registered nurse with strong roots in the Peterborough area.

“Thanks to Mrs. Stewart’s generosity, this scholarship will help remove barriers for students who wish to join our programs and become the nurses of tomorrow – compassionate and critical thinkers who create social change through the promotion of health and well-being,” says Dr. Hugo Lehmann, Trent/Fleming School of Nursing (TFSON) acting dean.

Doreen’s family faced financial hardship when she was growing up in the farming community of South Monaghan largely due to medical costs for her sisters Ruth and Shirley who had juvenile diabetes in the days before national healthcare.

“It is my hope that this scholarship helps bring the best and brightest minds to study at the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing,” says Doreen. “Financial hardship should not impede the education and training of capable and compassionate people for careers in nursing, and the pandemic has shone a light on the critical importance of nursing as a career.”

Doreen was able to pursue her dream of nursing. She graduated with her registered nurse qualifications from the Peterborough Civic Hospital in 1964, Occupational Health in 1979, and General Studies, Science in 2005. Her career spanned emergency and intensive care units across Canada, U.S. and South America.

The Doreen (Larmer) Stewart Nursing Scholarship will be distributed annually, with up to three awards worth $2,500 each available for full-time nursing students in any year of study in the TFSON.

The scholarship will offer financial assistance to qualified students: those with demonstrated financial need, with longstanding connections in the greater Peterborough community and surrounding rural areas, and who intend to complete a Bachelor’s degree in the study of nursing and go on to a nursing career.
