It was five years in the making since the last event but Kawartha Dental Clinic saw 106 patients during their ‘Free Dental Day’ on Saturday.

There were several people lined up for the free event that was as long as a city block according to Dr. Sina Sanei of Kawartha Dental.

“The first patient that I saw this morning, they started lining up at 1 a.m. in the morning,” he explained. “The lineup went around the building.”

The free dental work that was included were cleanings, fillings and extractions.

There were 45 staff members who volunteered their time to help out during the event. Sanei says there was a positive atmosphere throughout the day with some doctors working past 3 p.m. to fit all the patients in.

“Everyone was very appreciative of the work,” he said. “You don’t really feel tired. It’s a very fun and relaxing day. Every person you come across is in such a good mood.”

Kawartha Dental Clinic last held its Free Dental Day in 2017 and 2015. They were slated to do it in 2020 but were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sanei says this event will be run again in the coming years.

Metroland Seeking Bankruptcy Protection; Ceasing All Print Publications and Moving To Online-Only Model

Metroland Media is seeking protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act as they are restructuring its operations while laying off roughly 605 employees in an announcement made by the company on Friday morning.

The layoffs are almost two-thirds of the workforce while 71 of their newspapers are moving to a digital model according to the announcement.

The decision is due to the unsustainable financial losses of changing preferences of advertisers and consumers as stated by Metroland.

Jordan Bitove of Nordstar says they will continue to publish six daily newspapers in both print and digital formats. These include publications such as the Toronto Star, the Hamilton Spectator, St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune, Waterloo Region Record and locally, Peterborough Examiner. These outlets are continuing to serve in both print and digital formats.

Monaghan Ward Councillors To Host Green Bin Information Session

Monaghan Ward Councillors Matt Crowley and Don Vassiliadis are hosting an information session on the new Green Bin household organic waste collection service at the Mapleridge Recreation Centre from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 27.

Details will be presented on the waste collection service changes that begin the week of Halloween including the new weekly Green Bin service, bi-weekly garbage collection and the requirement to use clear bags for curbside garbage collection. Recycling collection will remain on a weekly schedule according to the City.

Citizens can ask questions to City staff and discuss the service changes.

The new Green Bin service will reduce the amount of garbage going to the landfill which extends the life of the landfill and reduces greenhouse gas emissions as stated in a press release.

Roughly 8,000 households are having their waste collection day shift with the re-balancing of collection routes to improve service reliability and safety for sanitation workers to do the curbside collection. Residents can check their collection day using the online tool.
