Cam Gauvreau's First Goal of the Season Helps the Peterborough Petes Beat Rival Oshawa Generals 3-2

Cam Gauvreau had a night to remember as his first tally of the season helped the Peterborough Petes get a 3-2 victory over the Oshawa Generals at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Both teams honoured the recent death of former NHLer Adam Johnson of the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League. He suffered a fatal cut to his neck from a skate during a game. Photo courtesy of Kenneth Andersen and the Peterborough Petes.

With no scoring the first, the Petes drew first blood in the second, 3:35 in. Johnathan Melee got his first of two points on the night, scoring off a give-and-go with Jax Dubois for a 1-0 lead. The Petes doubled their lead as Gauvreau tacked his first goal on the power play. He received a pass behind the net from Dubois and sniped it from just outside the faceoff dot to make it 2-0.

Oshawa got on the board as Peterborough turned the puck over in the defensive zone as Generals forward Tyler Graham scooped up the puck. He took a shot and was saved by Liam Stutska but could not corral the rebound, allowing Graham to take a second whack at it and slip it by to cut the Petes’ lead down to one.

Owen Beck made himself known for the Petes, receiving a long outlet pass and sniped it past Jacob Oster for a 3-1 Petes lead going into the third frame.

Oshawa would not go away easily as they got a powerplay 7:36 in. The Generals cycled the puck well which resulted in a goal on the man advantage with a one-timer from Luke Torrence to keep it a one-goal deficit. The visitors pulled the goal with less than two minutes left to play but Peterborough held on and got the 3-2 win.

The Petes are back on the ice as part of a home-and-home series as they will play the Generals again in Oshawa at the Tribute Communities Centre on Friday night.

United Way Peterborough's 2023 Community Campaign Reaches 45 Per Cent of $1.45 Million Fundraising Goal

United Way Peterborough & District has reached 45 per cent of its $1.45 million 2023 Community Campaign goal in an update announcement at the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board on Wednesday morning.

The amount represents a 10 per cent increase over the success of United Way’s community fundraising effort last year according to Jim Russell, United way CEO.

“‘Together we can...’ the theme of this year’s campaign is illustrated through the numbers in this update to the community - it has been a fun and busy fall - 73 per cent of our workplace campaigns are in full swing, have been completed or are scheduled to begin in the next week or so,” he said.

Several fundraising efforts have been made since the launch on Sept. 6 including a Fear Factor Competition, a mini bicycle “fondo” race, a skating party, a ‘Seeing is Believing’ Tour, a wellness fair and barbeques.

“With approximately 40 per cent of Community Campaign revenue coming directly from workplace Campaigns, we are grateful for the many dedicated employees who go above and beyond to organize and execute their workplace campaigns, bringing their teams together having fun and raising much needed funds for our community.”  said Russell “Based on workplace campaign projections and individual gifts received, so far we are 45 per cent or $652,5000 towards our 2023 Campaign Goal of $1.45 million.”

The United Way’s cabinet — selected in late August — contributed more than $40,000 to the campaign.

“Our 2023 Campaign Cabinet is a dedicated group of 22 people who have been working tirelessly as ambassadors and leaders in our community,” said Jim Hendry, campaign cabinet chair. “Our Cabinet members are volunteers and they also support the campaign financially,”
