Peterborough Petes Show Resilience But Suffer From a Third Period Surge In 6-3 Loss to Rival Oshawa Generals

The Petes saw their chances slip away from a third-period surge from the rival Oshawa Generals as they lost a 6-3 battle at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The Generals wasted no time getting on the board. Just 2:22 into the game, Matthew Buckley intercepted a pass, deked through Liam Stzuska and scored for a 1-0 lead.

Oshawa struck just less than 2:30 later. Calum Ritchie laid a soft pass out in front for Stuart Rolofs, who one-timed it in at point-blank range to make it 2-0.

The Petes finally responded as their second draft pick in the fourth round, Joseph Cadorin scored his first OHL goal off a rebound from an odd-man rush to cut the deficit in half after one period.

The Generals continued to keep the pressure on the Petes as Rolofs wired a shot from the point and got through everybody including Stuzska to restore the Generals’s two-goal lead, 3-1.

Peterborough would not stay down as Nico Addy, from within the faceoff circle, threw one at the net and beat Generals goaltender Noah Bender for a score to make it 3-2 going into the third.

The Petes had a two-man advantage early in the third period and made it count as Chase Lefebvre drops one off for Caden Taylor and scored on the one-timer for a tie game early in the third.

The Generals however started their three-goal surge to put the game away as Buckley scored a late powerplay goal, Ritchie scored an empty netter and Luke Torrence got a tip-in goal in garbage time.

The Petes host their Pink in the Rink game against the Niagara IceDogs this Saturday with puck drop at 7:05 p.m.

Peterborough Police to Adapt Verified Alarm Response Program

The Peterborough Police Service has introduced a Verified Alarm Response Program (VARP) where Alarm Monitoring Services will be required to verify any alarm signal they receive before notifying police beginning on March 1.

“The Peterborough Police Service is adopting VARP to improve service delivery to residents and business owners and to decrease the time spent responding to false alarms,” says Peter Sejrup, Inspector, Support Services, Peterborough Police Service. “Annually, the Peterborough Police Service responds to approximately 1,000 calls for service regarding alarms with a 5-year average false rate of approximately 94 per cent. This represents a significant amount of resources dedicated to incidents where police are not required.”

To dispatch police to a property-related alarm, alarm monitoring services will have to verify that a criminal offence has occurred or is occurring using at least one of the following verification criteria:

• Audio Signal (confirm criminal activity through sound detected on the premises)

• Video Signal (confirm criminal activity through visual images)

• On-Scene Witnesses (who can confirm suspected criminal activity from the scene)

• Multiple Alarm Activation Points (at least two sensors in a manner or sequence that indicates suspected criminal activity)

The Peterborough Police Service will continue to provide immediate response to panic/hold-up/duress alarms when there is reason to believe that a crime is in progress or an emergency exists.  Verification of those types of alarms is not required as the community's safety is paramount.

It was a spirited homecoming for Peterborough Petes Alumnus and Stanley Cup champion Chris Pronger as he held a bottle signing of his whiskey brand ‘JRNY’ at the LCBO on Lansdowne Street and Goodfellow Road on Thursday afternoon.

Roughly 20 people were lined up outside the LCBO prior to his bottle signing and several more joined in throughout the two-hour timeframe to get autographs including on their respective hockey apparel and photographs.

The whiskey was created alongside his brother and former NHLer Sean Pronger who was also present during the bottle signing.

Chris played for two seasons with the Petes from 1991 to 1993. The Hart Memorial Trophy-winning defenceman scored 32 goals and 107 assists in two seasons with the Petes.

Chris is performing the ceremonial puck drop for the Peterborough Petes game as they host the rival Oshawa Generals on the same night.

Publican House's 'Our Pet Pilsner' Raises Over $8,500 For Peterborough Humane Society's Animal Care Centre

Since its inception in early February of 2022, Publican House’s fundraiser beer ‘Our Pet Pilsner’ has raised over $8,500 for the Peterborough Humane Society and their Animal Care Centre.

The money was to aid the Humane Society’s move to their new $10 million Animal Care Centre on Technology Drive.

The beer originally raised $5,000 as of May last year. The downtown pub raised another $3,590 and donated the money in another cheque presentation last Friday.

The brewery plans to continue to raise money for the Humane Society throughout 2024.

”With the gold medal recognition at this year's Ontario Brewing Awards, we hope to raise even more in 2024. Thank you to everyone who has enjoyed an Our Pet Pilsner and to the amazing team at the Peterborough Humane Society,” as stated in an Instagram post.

As part of the collaboration, Publican House showcased a pet for adoption from the Humane Society on their social media every month.

The beer label design was created by local artist Jason Wilkins.

Trent University is seeking nominations for their 2024 Alumni Association Awards for any graduate making a difference in their communities.

The following are the categories available for nominations:

• Distinguished Alumni Award - presented based on a person's achievement and leadership in business, industry, a profession or in public life.

• Spirit of Trent Award - presented to an alum who has made a difference, through contribution to the university, or their community.

• Young Leader Award - presented to young alumni who have shown outstanding leadership throughout their first 10 years of alumni status either in their professional career and/or community, public or humanitarian service and are 35 years of age or younger.

• Paul Delaney Award for Outstanding Young Philanthropist - presented to a student or a recent alum whose work sowing seeds of friendship and a spirit of philanthropy makes them an outstanding model for Trent students to emulate.
  
  The David Glassco Prize - recognizes a student who has demonstrated outstanding generosity of spirit in a range of activities outside the classroom, including music, athletics, or theatre, in the Trent and Peterborough communities.

• The Robert W.F. Stephenson Prize for Excellence in Student Governance -recognizes an outstanding student leader and underscores the Alumni Association’s high regard for student leadership contribution to the overall mission of Trent University.

The Agenda's Steve Paikin to Make Appearance at Lakefield Literary Festival On March 22

Steve Paikin of the hit Canadian television show ‘The Agenda’ will be in attendance for the The Lakefield Literary Festival (LLF) in a spring event announced on Thursday morning.

Paikin will be at the Lakefield College School’s Bryan Jones Theatre on March 22 at 7:30 p.m. The event will feature LLF Board Chair, John Boyko, moderating a conversation on the current state of political leadership related to Paikin’s critically acclaimed biography of Prime Minister John Turner.

There will also be a Q & A session with the audience and an opportunity to meet Paikin and have a book signed.

Tickets will be available for $30 at Happenstance Books and Yarns in Lakefield or online.

Peterborough Petes 15th Annual Pink In the Rink Game To Support Wheels of Hope Running This Saturday

In support of Wheels of Hope, the Peterborough Petes' 15th annual Pink in the Rink game is set for Saturday when the Petes host the Niagara IceDogs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The team is wearing special theme jerseys designed by Kyle McDonald of Pioneer Inc. that highlight the names of nearly 200 people battling cancer and feature a special Canadian Cancer Society shoulder crest.

The funds support the Wheels of Hope transportation program provided by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). It connects people to cancer treatments with volunteer drivers and travel cost reimbursements.

All Petes players and coaches will act as ambassadors for the campaign. Family, friends and fans can donate on behalf of a particular player or coach by going online and choosing their name from the dropdown menu on the CCS fundraising website.

Fans can also support the campaign through an in-person silent auction in the North Lobby on game night, a special chuck-a-puck at the second intermission or by purchasing an Official 15th Annual Pink in the Rink t-shirt and/or Anniversary Pin.

Bobcaygeon Brewing Co. has produced a limited edition run of Petes Lager featuring a Pink Can. Each can sold sees 25 cents donated to the Pink in the Rink campaign.

After raising $954,136 over the past 14 years, the Petes announced that this year’s fundraising goal is $50,000. If achieved, the Petes and the Peterborough community will hit $1,000,000 raised in the fight against cancer in Pink in the Rink’s history. 

Official game jerseys are available at the Pink in the Rink live post-game auction. Fans are asked to move to the Gibson’s Finest Club Section immediately following the game to participate in the auction. A game ticket is required to take part in the game-worn jersey auction.

2024 PolarFest Running at Full Force For Selwyn Township

Winter has never been more fun for Selwyn Township, as the 2024 PolarFest is in full swing for three days, beginning this Friday and ending Sunday.

The Opening Ceremony and Fireworks begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Chemong Lodge. At 6:45 p.m., fireworks will be set off on Chemong Lake.

The Causeway is the host site for the Guns and Hoses Charity Hockey Game. Local police and fire service members will face off at 8 p.m. at the Ennismore Community Centre. The fundraiser aims to beat last year’s mark of $2,000 in food and money for the Bridgenorth and Lakefield Food Banks by bringing a non-perishable food item or cash donation.

On Saturday, the Lakefield Ice Sculpture Competition is back at Cenotaph Park. Ice carvings are going on display, created by professional chefs. Festival goers can vote for their favourite cultures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Top Carver is being crowned at The Loon at 5 p.m. Take a ride back in time as Chemong Lodge is hosting its third-annual 80’s Retro Apres Ski Party with a booze luge, DJ, ice bar and prizes for those best dressed from noon to 4 p.m..

On Sunday, the Bridgenorth-Ennismore-Lakefield (BEL) Rotary Polar Plunge begins at 2 p.m. on the Ennismore side of the Causeway. This year’s theme features ‘Barbie’ costumes.

Repeat Sex Offender At Large After Fleeing From Residence After a Search Warrant; Peterborough Police Issue Public Safety Alert

The Peterborough Police Service has issued a public safety alert and is searching for a repeat sexual offender Jason Outhwaite who fled from his residence shortly after a search warrant was conducted there on Thursday.

The evidence recovered, as a result of the search warrant, has led Investigators to believe that reasonable and probable grounds exist for charges of possession of child pornography. A warrant for the arrest of the 46-year-old for possession of child pornography has been issued. 

It is believed Outhwaite is operating an older-style white Dodge Ram pick-up truck with Ontario License plate ‘BW88604.’  

Outhwaite is described as:

• 5’9 and 190 lbs.

• Medium build

• Receding black and grey hair and brown eyes

• He is known to wear prescription glasses

Outhwaite has a history of sexual assault and has multiple convictions of sexual offences against children. 

Anyone who has seen Outhwaite or knows his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
