The Art School of Peterborough Hosting An Anniversary Celebration With a 30-Year Milestone

The Art School of Peterborough is celebrating its 30th anniversary in style on Sept. 21 from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Mount Community Centre.

For 30 years, The Art School of Peterborough as a not for profit organization has offered the Peterborough community opportunities to explore their creativity and build their visual art skills. Photo courtesy of the Mount COmmunity Centre.

The event will have all current and previous students with supportive community members with the event open to anyone.

Light refreshments, interactive live art, a photo booth, a DJ and a cash bar will be at the festivities.

It will also showcase a variety of the students’s work of art. Calendars are available for pre-orders and for pick up during the event. They are be $30 each.

McDonnel Street and Aylmer Street North To Undergo Road Resurfacing Next Week

McDonnel Street and Aylmer Street are undergoing road resurfacing, beginning no sooner than Monday.

The work is expected to be completed in the late fall.

The westbound lane will be closed along McDonnel Street between Bethune Street and George Street and the closure of Aylmer Street between London Street and Brock Street shall be implemented along with the associated detours. As a result, local traffic is expected to experience delays within the construction limits.

The scope of work generally includes the installation/adjustments of select frames, covers and grates, minor curb removal, curb re-installations, milling of existing asphalt, application of emulsified asphalt tack coat, placement of top lift asphalt and application of pavement markings on McDonnel Street from Bethune Street to Water Street and Aylmer Street North from Murray Street to McDonnel Street.

The City awarded the project to Green Infrastructure Partners Inc.

Peterborough Police Service to Host Information Session Thursday Evening

The Peterborough Police Service is hosting an open information session at the McDonnel Activity Centre on Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Police are sharing details concerning spent tax dollars and comparing them to other communities nationally, provincially and locally. There is also information regarding local initiatives and their impact on public safety in the City of Peterborough.

There is a Q&A during the session but time is limited.

The Peterborough Police is live-streaming the presentation on its YouTube channel.

The show is a combination of storytelling with thrill-seeking theatrics.

Full of award-winning circus-style performers, aerialists, contortionists, jugglers, dancers are performing for family entertainment.

Tickets go on sale on Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. online or in person at the box office. Tickets are priced at $39.50, $54.50 and $69.50 (plus applicable fees; subject to change). There is also a kid’s ticket price of $20.00 for children under the age of 12.

Fleming College Expands Health Care Programming In Lindsay With New Mobile Laboratory This Winter

Fleming College is bringing its Personal Support Worker program to Lindsay’s Frost Campus this winter with a state-of-the-art mobile laboratory to help expand health care in the City of Kawartha Lakes, announced on Monday.

According to a press release, Fleming says there is a tremendous need for qualified personal support workers across the province. It continues to state that the province estimates that it will need up to 24,000 qualified personal support workers by 2026.

The new mobile lab will train 64 potential personal support workers with state-of-the-art equipment. The course is over two semesters with 400 hours of theory, hands-on laboratory experience and 300 hours of real-life training.

“This mobile laboratory allows us to conveniently bring health care training into the heart of Lindsay and the surrounding regions,” said Maureen Adamson, Fleming College. “These students will offer health care support to the local community during their placements and upon graduation.”

“I am thrilled to see Fleming College taking such a proactive approach in addressing the healthcare needs of our region,” said Laurie Scott, Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP. The introduction of this mobile PSW lab is a game-changer for our community, providing accessible and high-quality training right here in Lindsay. This initiative will not only equip our students with valuable skills but it will ultimately enhance the overall healthcare services available locally.”

The mobile lab allows the college to deliver PSW training without renovating a physical space. The PSW program will be located at the Frost Campus in the winter of next year. Fleming says there is potential to expand to other communities within the region as stated in a press release.

Petes Season Ticket BBQ Hits Peterborough Memorial Centre On Sept. 24

The Peterborough Petes are hosting its Season Ticket Member BBQ returned to the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Sept. 24 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The BBQ will feature food fromM&M Food Market Peterborough, refreshments, and inflatables from Castle Kid. The event will also feature introductions to the 2024-25 Peterborough Petes roster,with a full-team autograph session and speeches from coaches and management to follow.

“We’re very excited to announce the return of the Season Ticket Member BBQ,” said Tyler Hall, Petes coordinator of season ticket sales and service. “Last year’s event in the Morrow building was great but we’re looking forward to hosting in the arena this year. Thanks to the city of Peterborough for helping to make this possible.”

The event is open only to Season Ticket Members. They are invited to bring along their family to enjoy the event and are asked to enter the BBQ through the Petes Store on the north side of the building.

A very limited number of season tickets are still available for the 2024-25 season. Interested fans can contact Hall by email or at (705) 743-3681 ext. 209.

The Petes are back in action on Saturday to host the Guelph Storm at the Cavan Monaghan Community Centre in Millbrook. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Petes official YouTube page.

Community Futures Peterborough's ScaleUP Program Announces 2024 Cohort of Graduated Businesses

Six entrepreneurs growing their business operations have completed and graduated from Community Futures Peterborough’s (CFP) 2024 ScaleUP program and were commemorated at their facility at the Venture North Building on Tuesday.

The initiative is a collaboration between CFP and Scotiabank which help equip the entrepreneurs with strategic insights and tools necessary for accelerated growth according to Devon Girard, CFP executive director.

“This dedicated group of ambitious business owners is now equipped with a customized expansion plan to grow and scale their operations,” she said, “We couldn’t be prouder to support their business journey, and we’re thrilled to see their sustainable growth plans put into action.”

The 2024 ScaleUP program was designed to address the evolving needs of regional entrepreneurs with the strategic tools required to make key decisions about how their businesses can scale according to a press release.

A New Era of Kawartha Lakes Construction Begins As Duo Take Ownership Of Company

The torch is passed on at Kawartha Lakes Construction as Mark Reid, general manager and Ben Reynolds, director of construction have assumed ownership of the business, announced on Tuesday.

City of Peterborough Appoints New Municipal Operations Commissioner

The City of Peterborough has appointed Ilmar Simanovskis as the new Commissioner of Municipal Operations effective Oct. 15., announced on Tuesday.

City Council approved the appointment of Simanovskis, based on the recommendation of Chief Administrative Officer Jasbir Raina, during its meeting on Monday.

Simanovskis has over 30 years of experience in construction, design, engineering, and public administration, gained from both public and private sector roles according to a press release. It continues to state that he has focused on working closely with diverse teams, stakeholders and community members to deliver successful programs and services that meet the needs of the communities he has served.

“As a member of the City’s Senior Leadership Team, I look forward to being part of the City’s culture of innovation in the delivery of municipal services that align with Peterborough’s vision for environmental sustainability, social well-being, and efficient operations,” said Simanovskis. “I am excited to join the City of Peterborough and to work alongside such a dedicated team. My focus will be on leading and supporting the strategic service delivery needs of the community that not only address current challenges but also prepare us for the future. Together, we will continue to improve the quality of municipal services, ensuring that our city remains a great place to live, work and grow.”

In this new role, Simanovskis will be responsible for the Municipal Operations Department, which encompasses Public Works, Environmental Services, Transit, and the Peterborough Airport according to the City. These departments play vital roles in the city's day-to-day operations.

Simanovskis joins the City from Civica Infrastructure, a private-sector engineering and infrastructure asset management firm, where he served as vice president of the project Portfolio. He also has extensive experience in municipal government, including working as the Commissioner of Community Services in Richmond Hill, the Director of Engineering Services in Oshawa and the Director of Infrastructure and Environmental Services in Aurora.

"On behalf of the City of Peterborough, I am excited to welcome Mr. Simanovskis as our new Commissioner of Municipal Operations,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “His leadership and experience will be key in driving forward our goals for efficient and effective municipal operations. Peterborough Police Arrest 17-Year-Old Teen For Hitting Someone With a Hammer For a Sweater

A 17-year-old Peterborough male is facing several charges after striking someone with a hammer during an incident Monday night.

At roughly 10:15 p.m., officers were called to a residence in the Brock Street and Aylmer Street area regarding a dispute between two males who knew each other. 

A male had struck another male in the head with a hammer and demanded his sweater before fleeing the area. The victim was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment. Officers located the teen, who matched the description several blocks away and took him into custody.  During a search after the arrest, officers seized a sweater and a hammer. 

The teen was arrested and charged with:

  • Robbery with Weapon

  • Assault with a Weapon

  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.
