Officers with the Peterborough Police Service Investigative Services Unit and Belleville Police Service Tactical Team executed a warrant at a residence in Belleville on Thursday. They arrested 28-year-old Peter Pople of Peterborough and charged with second-degree Murder. He was held in custody and appeared in court on Friday.

Also, at around 8 p.m. on Thursday, 29-year-old Kaya Coughlin was located and arrested at Trinity Community Centre (Reid Street and Simcoe Street) and charged with manslaughter. She was also held in custody and appeared in court on Friday.

A third person, 44-year-old Michael Waterman, is still being sought by police.

Police are actively seeking information regarding his whereabouts.

Stuart Betts, Peterborough Police chief, released the following statement:

“I would like to recognize the tenacity and exceptional work of our officers in locating these two suspects. It has required hundreds of hours of investigation to ensure these individuals were located and taken into custody.

I also extend my appreciation and thanks to the Belleville Police Service for their support in helping our Investigators locate and arrest a suspect in their city.

Although this was an isolated incident, it is never-the-less, strikes at the heart of public safety, and a community’s feelings of being safe. Locating, arresting and bring those believed responsible before the court has been a top priority and is critically important to the victim's family and our community as a whole.”

Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation (GPHSF) is hosting its fifth annual Darkness To Light event at Del Crary Park for community members impacted by suicide and overdose this Sunday.

The event is an outdoor sunrise gathering, marking brighter days ahead after the solstice, the day with the least daylight. The ceremony will take place at the entrance to Del Crary Park off Rink Street.

The event will be rain, snow or shine and is free to attend. Organizers ask guests to arrive by 7:30 a.m., as sunrise is expected at 7:45 a.m.

Julie Brown, who has led the event each year, will return to lead the group with a message of support and a moment of silence as the sun rises over Little Lake.

“Our community has been significantly impacted by suicide and overdose and we hope that this gathering will help create a space where those directly touched can come together for a quiet moment,” she said.

New this year, Hospice Grief Listeners will be at the event. Grief listeners are specially trained volunteers who lend a sympathetic ear and sit with people in their grief.

“The holidays can be a difficult time for those struggling with bereavement,” said Vince Bierworth, GPHSF executive director. “After feedback about how impactful the last four ceremonies have been, we are glad to be able to offer once again some comfort for people impacted by suicide and overdose in our community.”

Potent Power Play Propels Peterborough Petes With 5-2 Win Over Niagara IceDogs

The man advantage helped the Petes secure the win, as they defeated the Niagara IceDogs 5-2 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The scoring started with Braydon McCallum as Petes were spending some extra time in the offensive zone. McCallum wristed one inside the faceoff circle through traffic and found the back of the net for a 1-0 game as the only score of the period.

Peterborough extended their lead as James Petrovski wristed one in from the point just six seconds into a power play for a 2-0 lead. Just 1:32 later, the Petes had the man-advantage again as Aiden Young got his own rebound and snuck it by the IceDogs goaltender for the team’s second power play goal to make it 3-0 heading into the final frame.

The third period saw Niagara get on the board just 2:06 in to cut the lead to two. Peterborough once again capitalized on the power play as they peppered the goalie with a barrage of shots. Petrovski got a juicy rebound and buried it on a wide-open net for a 4-1 game. Niagara did not want to go down without a fight as Riley Patterson scored on the power play for his second goal of the game to make it 4-2. Leon Kolarik deposited an empty-net goal with 75 seconds left in regulation and Peterborough handily got the 5-2 win as they head into the holiday break.

The Petes play one more time before their holiday break as they travel to the nation’s capital to play the Ottawa 67’s on Friday night.

Youth Mental Health Awareness an Emphasis For Third Annual Harmony for Healing's Fundraising Concert On Feb. 19

Harmony for Healing has announced the third consecutive year of its annual event with ‘Power of Love: Voices of Youth’ as a locally produced mental health awareness campaign and live concert fundraiser to be held at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre on Feb. 19.

This year’s initiative places an even stronger focus on youth mental health, connection and hope. Harmony for Healing creator and producer Phillip Jolicoeur had his mother pass away from suicide in 2022, with the event serving as a tribute to her.

“Harmony for Healing started as a way to turn pain into purpose,” he said. “This year feels especially close to the heart as we lift up youth voices and remind them they matter, they are heard, and they are not alone. These stories and moments are created locally by people who truly care.”

Harmony for Healing has raised over $29,000 to date, including $15,744 raised last year alone, toward its five-year goal of $50,000. All proceeds support the Assertive Outreach Suicide Prevention Program (AOSP) through CMHA Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge, providing life-saving support to individuals and families in crisis.

The event has sold out in the first two iterations, which blend music with meaningful conversations around mental health and suicide prevention.

This year’s awareness campaign centres on stories from local youth, sharing their lived mental health experiences through a professionally produced video series.

@ptbo_canada Harmony for Healing returns for its third consecutive year with a youth-centred mental health awareness campaign and live concert Power of Love: Voices of Youth 💜 #ptbocanada #peterboroughontario #mentalhealth ♬ Vittra - Kasbo

ReFrame Film Festival Announces 2026 Film Lineup

ReFrame Film Festival has released its 2026 film lineup, featuring more than 40 new documentary films which aim to confront inequities and celebrate resilience.

Photo Courtesy of Reframe Film Festival.

Each year, ReFrame’s lineup is organized into curated thematic collections. This year’s collections are Art Beat, A Thousand Words, Flora & Fauna, Sharp Angles, Women Everywhere and Windows In, each reflecting the range of perspectives that shape the festival.

The following titles are notable examples from the 2026 lineup and serve as highlights from across the program:

No More Silent Battles (Collection: Windows In)

Through the experiences of four families navigating dementia care, this documentary centres resilience, compassion and the importance of community support. Led by Peterborough-based geriatrician Dr. Jenny Ingram, the film offers a grounded look at caring for people living with dementia at home and the conditions that make it possible.

Holloway (Collection: Women Everywhere)

Six women return to the now-abandoned Holloway Prison to take part in a women’s circle. Sharing some of the most intimate experiences of their lives, they each unravel what led them to prison, building an eye-opening portrait of failing systems and trauma while discovering their extraordinary capacity to heal through sisterhood.

Future Council (Collection: Flora & Fauna)

Millions of children around the world are frustrated by the dire lack of action to protect the planet and their future. Until now, their only avenue to express these concerns has been protesting on the streets. Director Damon Gameau (2040, That Sugar Film) invites eight children on an epic adventure across Europe in a school bus powered by biofuel.

At All Kosts (Collection: Art Beat)

In Haiti, in the time of cholera and street gangs, artists have used the performing arts as a mode of resistance. Born after the Duvalier dictatorship, these young people have lived through 19 presidents, 36 prime ministers, eight coups d’état, three foreign military interventions and two major earthquakes.

ReFrame Film Festival takes place in person Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 at the Showplace Performance Centre and Market Hall Performing Arts Centre, followed by a virtual program streaming nationwide Feb. 3 to 8. Just over half of the full lineup will be available online.

In-person, virtual and hybrid passes are available on the website.
