Toronto Airways officially celebrated its investment at Peterborough Regional Airport on Wednesday, October 14th, with Mayor Jeff Leal joining company representatives for a tour of its flight training facility.

The company began operating at the airport in May 2026, following the City’s announcement in February 2025 that Canadian Flight Academy, owned by Toronto Airways, would become a new tenant.

At the time, the operation was projected to create approximately 50 direct jobs and contribute an estimated $20 million to the local economy through gross domestic product.

Toronto Airways has provided flight training in Ontario since 1963. Its Peterborough facility delivers the Canadian Integrated Airline Transport Pilot Licence program in partnership with Centennial College, with students receiving ground instruction, simulator training and aircraft training onsite.

The operation is supported by a fleet of 16 aircraft and an onsite aircraft maintenance organization.

Mayor Jeff Leal said the investment strengthens Peterborough Regional Airport’s role in aviation employment, training and economic development while creating opportunities for future aviation professionals.

The City-owned airport, located in Peterborough County, is home to more than 20 aviation and aerospace businesses that support over 550 direct jobs. Its facilities serve a range of operations, including flight training, corporate aviation, aircraft maintenance and aerospace services.

"We Know We Need to Win In Peterborough..." NDP Leader Marit Stiles Wants to Win Bellwether Riding of Peterborough-Kawartha to Form Government Next Provincial Election

New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Marit Stiles is poised to change Peterborough’s views and capitalize on the area’s ‘bellwether riding’ as she came to town to discuss her election-readiness strategies and legislative focus for the upcoming year.

Screenshot.

The NDP held its caucus retreat in Peterborough during its visit while Stiles spoke at the Holiday Inn on Wednesday. She addressed issues such as the job market, emergency room wait times, the lack of affordable housing, homelessness, the high cost of living and more.

The 45th Ontario general election is tentatively scheduled for April 11, 2030, unless the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario dissolves the Legislative Assembly of Ontario earlier.

The Peterborough-Kawartha riding has been won by the Conservative Party for the past three elections dating back to 2018. MPP Dave Smith and Doug Ford successfully won and held their seats in their respective elections.

Stiles pointed to Ford for the problems he allegedly created and failed to solve since being elected.

“I think people were sold a bill of goods by Doug Ford in the last election again and they are not seeing the results,” said Stiles. “What they are seeing are continued job losses, what they are feeling is that wait that never ends in the emergency room and they are seeing affordable housing being built, more people becoming homeless, life becoming more unaffordable and they are sick and tired of it.”

With the municipal election on Oct. 26 approaching, Stiles stresses the importance of a symbiotic relationship between municipal and provincial politics and how they can better the lives they govern.

“Doug Ford has done everything he can to take away the power of our local communities to get things done,” said Stiles. “Our municipalities are forced to pay for everything and they have very little control. We’ve seen him override again and again the decisions that our municipalities make so we’ve put forward many times in the past many times and we will keep doing that a new deal for municipalities and we believe in the role of local government and that government is extremely important but they need a real partner in the provincial government who respects them and respects the decisions that community members make.”

Stiles criticized Ford for not living up to the promises he made since he was first elected Premier in 2018. She said he did not end the hallway healthcare crisis, deliberately invested public healthcare dollars in privatizing healthcare and education, not take accountability or provide transparency and continued making deals with his ‘billionaire friends’ with no intention to aid the economy.

“He has failed to completely address many of the things he was going to address now and more than eight years ago,” said Stiles.

Stiles noted that Peterborough-Kawartha has been a bellwether riding, often voting for the party that wins its respective election. Since 1977, the Peterborough-Kawartha riding has voted for the party with the most seats in every election.

“We know we need to win in Peterborough to form government in the next election and that’s what we intend to do,” said Stiles.

The NDP leader remarked that her party has been gaining momentum and plans to give Ford and the Conservative Party a run for their money in the next provincial election in 2030.

“This past summer showed definitively that the next election will be fought between the Conservatives and the Ontario NDP,” said Stiles. “We picked up a decisive win in Scarborough Southwest, electing an incredible MPP in Fatima Shaban and nearly doubled our votes in Hamilton East—Stoney Creek. As we head into the legislative session, we are ready to bring pragmatic solutions to make life more affordable and hold this government to account.”

With no term limits for the Premier of Ontario, Ford is seeking a fourth in 2030. Stiles and the NDP are considered the leader of the official opposition and are challenging for Premier in the next provincial election.

“Ontario has had enough of Doug Ford’s scandals,” concluded Stiles. “New Democrats are ready for the fight ahead; bringing practical solutions to get your money back from his insiders and put it back in your pockets, where it belongs. That’s the work you can expect from us this session.”

“We’re very excited for Landon,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations. “This is a great chance for him to play with and against some of the top U17 talent in the world. Landon has worked very hard, both on and off the ice, to earn this opportunity. The St. Catharines native was originally selected by the Petes with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. The 6’2” forward helped the Kings win the 2026 GTHL Championship and earn a spot in the OHL Cup, where he scored one goal and added three assists for four points in four games.

Roulston joins Petes video coach and assistant to the general manager, Alex Darling, at the tournament. Darling will serve as video coach for Canada White.

The Petes return home to host the North Bay Battalion on Thursday for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Applications For Snow Removal Subsidy Program For Low-Income Seniors Or Residents With Physical Disabilities Open Thursday

The City of Peterborough’s new pilot Snow Removal Subsidy program to provide financial assistance to eligible low-income seniors and residents with physical disabilities for snow removal during the 2026-2027 winter season begins this Thursday.

The pilot program has 100 spaces available. If more than 100 eligible applications are submitted, a random selection process will be used to select the residents to give all eligible applicants an equal opportunity.

Applications open at 8:30 a.m. next Thursday and can be submitted online, by phone at 705-742-7777 or in person at City Hall. The application period will close on Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m.

Eligible applicants may receive up to $450 toward snow removal costs during the winter season. The subsidy will be provided in two installments of up to $225.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must:

  • be a resident of the City of Peterborough;

  • own and reside in the home during the winter season;

  • not live in a condominium where snow removal is the responsibility of the condominium corporation;

  • be unable to clear snow and have no other adult in the household physically able to do so;

  • be 65 years of age or older, or have a physical disability; and

  • have a total after tax household income below the current Statistics Canada Low-income Measure (LIM), adjusted for family size

Homeowners selected for the pilot program will receive the first payment of up to $225 via direct deposit once their application is approved. To receive the second payment, participants must submit copies of receipts confirming they used the first payment for eligible snow removal services. Once reviewed, the second payment of up to $225 will be issued at the end of February 2027.

The eligibility criteria will assist in keeping the program equitable by ensuring that funding is directed to residents who are in need of assistance and who have limited ability to arrange or complete snow removal independently.

Residents are responsible for arranging their own snow removal service. Snow removal may be provided by a snow-clearing company or a neighbour willing to provide the service for a fee and provide receipts.

The pilot Snow Removal Subsidy program provides financial assistance toward snow removal only. It was approved by City Council following community consultation conducted earlier this year and will be evaluated following the 2026-2027 winter season to help inform future program decisions.

Campbellford Memorial Hospital (CMH) is one step closer to a new facility after Trent Hills Council unanimously approved land-use changes for the proposed site on Tuesday, October 13th.

The approval covers a 48-acre property on County Road 30 that is planned to become a Campus of Care, bringing together a new hospital, a long-term care home and additional health and community services.

The land was offered to the hospital in 2022 by local landowner and longtime supporter Jim Curle, whose donation made the proposed development possible.

The latest decision establishes the planning framework needed to move the project through its next stages, allowing further work on the site's future development to continue.

While the approval marks an important milestone, significant work remains before the new hospital can become a reality. CMH continues to advance the project through the Ontario Ministry of Health's capital planning process, alongside technical studies, site planning and community engagement.

CMH is a 38-bed hospital in Trent Hills that serves approximately 40,000 residents across Northumberland, Peterborough and Hastings counties, as well as seasonal visitors to the region.

The proposed Campus of Care is intended to support healthcare delivery across the region by bringing hospital services and other forms of care together at one location.
