Gauvreau is encouraging its team, clients, local businesses and community members to roll up their sleeves this November as part of its new Gauvreau Gives to Win! campaign.

Running from November 1st to 30th, the campaign is focused on supporting blood donation and raising awareness about the importance of giving blood.

In Peterborough, the goal is to fill 20 donation appointments on Tuesday, November 24th, at 645 Lansdowne Street West, Unit 154.

Community members can help by booking an appointment, encouraging someone else to donate or sharing the campaign to spread the word.

Every appointment can make a difference, and Gauvreau is hoping the community will come together to help reach its goal.

Those interested in donating can book an appointment for November 24th online at Canadian blood services.

Porter is one of just 12 athletes selected from across the country for the national team, which will compete at the Global Youth Sevens in Auckland, New Zealand, from December 18th to 20th.

The international tournament, held at Dilworth School in Epsom, brings together some of the top U18 boys’ and girls’ rugby sevens players from around the world, giving young athletes an opportunity to showcase their talent on a global stage.

Porter, who plays for the Peterborough Pagans U18 Girls rugby team, has already enjoyed success representing her province in another sport.

This past summer, she helped Team Ontario capture gold at the 2026 U18 Women’s Tackle National Championship in Regina, Saskatchewan, scoring three touchdowns in the championship game against Quebec.

Now, Porter will take another major step in her athletic journey, this time wearing the maple leaf and representing Canada against international competition.

The Salvation Army's Services In Jeopardy With $88,000 Shortfall of Fundraising Goal

The Salvation Army Peterborough has an $88,000 fundraising shortfall to continue supporting services this year.

According to a press release, Christmas fundraising determines the budget for the following year through their upcoming Hope for All Seasons Christmas Appeal campaign. The organization raised only $582,000 of the $670,000 needed to meet expected demand. By year's end, the Breakfast Program alone will have served 26,000 meals as resources have been stretched thin according to Major Naomi Dalley, supervisor of the social services program.

“We had to find creative solutions to ensure everyone received something,” she said. “It has been a hard year.”

The Salvation Army also opened a local shelter temporarily, which they state has added pressure for additional funding. Though repairs are complete and the shelter has reopened, some clients turned to The Salvation Army for help during the closure.

“Whenever a local resource centre experiences a setback, we experience part of the ripple effect,” says Dalley.

This year, the fundraising goal is $675,000 to meet the projected demand for services.

The budget includes funding for the Christmas Assistance Program. It provides grocery cards and toys for children; the Breakfast Program, which serves hot morning meals; and the food bank. Funds also support emergency assistance, which offers financial relief for rent, utilities and medical costs for those in urgent need; a trustee program, which helps clients budget; and criminal justice services, which helps clients meet restitution requirements and supports those leaving correctional institutions as they reintegrate into society.

“The $88,000 shortfall hit hard and we still have a couple of months to go,” said Dalley. “Every donation helps us continue providing essential services to people who need them.”

Christmas kettles will be available starting Nov. 12 at locations throughout Peterborough. A kettle will also be available during the Peterborough Petes’ Teddy Bear Toss game on Dec. 10. Donations can also be made online.

Ennismore Hockey Community Comes Together for 16-Year-Old Goalie Mattais Wojtowicz

By Scott Arnold

A familiar face between the pipes for the Ennismore Eagles is facing a difficult road ahead, but his teammates, hockey association and wider community are making sure 16-year-old Mattais Wojtowicz and his family don't have to face it alone.

A familiar face between the pipes for the Ennismore Eagles is facing a difficult road ahead, but his teammates, hockey association and wider community are making sure 16-year-old Mattais Wojtowicz and his family don't have to face it alone.

Mattais, a St. Peter's Secondary School student and longtime member of the Ennismore Minor Hockey Association (EMHA), has been diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a form of cancer.

He is currently recovering from abdominal surgery to remove a mass and is expected to begin a four-month course of chemotherapy at SickKids Hospital within the next one to two weeks, according to an update shared by his mother, Heidi.

With a challenging period ahead for Mattais and his family, the Ennismore hockey community is stepping up to help.

The EMHA has made the decision to dedicate this year's Hockey Weekend in Ennismore, running November 5th to 8th, entirely to supporting Mattais and his family. All proceeds raised throughout the four-day event will go toward helping with everyday expenses, including meals, travel, fuel and other costs, allowing the family to focus on Mattais and his treatment.

For EMHA, the decision represents a significant shift from the original purpose of the annual event.

"For many years, Hockey Weekend in Ennismore has been a special tradition for our association and community," said EMHA president Paula Joore. "It has always been about more than just the game of hockey. It's a weekend where we come together to celebrate our Eagles and raise funds to help our association keep the cost of hockey as affordable as possible for local families."

That changed when the association learned of Mattais's diagnosis.

"This year we shifted gears as soon as we found out Mattais was diagnosed with cancer. We made an executive decision to make this Hockey weekend about Mattais and his family," Joore explained.

Mattais is a goalie with the Ennismore Eagles U18B1 team and has played hockey in Ennismore for many years. His teammates and their families have been among those leading the efforts to make this year's weekend special.

Erin Cavanagh, team manager for the U18B1 team, says the entire group is rallying behind their teammate.

"The WHOLE TEAM, players and parents are rallying behind him," Cavanagh shared. "Additionally, Mattais has played with many players from U18B2 and at Hockey Weekend in Ennismore, all players from U18B1 and U18B2 are volunteering to make the weekend a huge success!"

The support has extended well beyond the teams themselves.

Joore says local businesses and community members have already been donating items, while team managers have been reaching out to find ways to contribute. She also praised the work being done by the association's executive and the staff of the Glen Windrem U18B team to organize the weekend.

"The outpouring of love and support we have already seen has been truly overwhelming," Joore said. "It really shows just how much love and support there is for this young Eagle and his family."

Hockey Weekend in Ennismore: November 5th to 8th

This year's Hockey Weekend in Ennismore will feature four days of hockey, special activities and fundraising opportunities, with all proceeds going to Mattais and his family.

Thursday, November 5th, is opening night, running from 5pm to 9:15pm. Raffle prize baskets and a 50/50 draw will be available throughout the weekend, with Ennismore U13 White taking on the Millbrook Stars Green at 7:30pm.

Friday, November 6th, is Retro Night. Activities include a custom-fit mouthguard clinic from 5:30pm to 8pm, Jesse's Lasagna Supper and a silent auction featuring retro jerseys. The evening also features Ennismore U11B against Lakefield at 6pm, U15B1 against Millbrook at 7:30pm and the EMHA Alumni Game at 9:15pm.

Saturday, November 7th, begins with U7 exhibition games at 9am, followed by a peameal-on-a-bun barbecue from 9:30am to 11:30am, or while supplies last. The day's activities also include a Chuck-A-Puck event and a full schedule of hockey, with the final game featuring Ennismore U21 against the Tweed Hawks at 9:15pm.

Sunday, November 8th, features another full day of hockey, beginning with games at 9am. Among the matchups is Ennismore U16B against the Frontenac Flyers at 11:30am. The final scheduled game is Ennismore U18 LL White against U18 LL Green at 5:30pm, which is also when the raffle and Hockey Weekend in Ennismore 50/50 draws take place.

A full breakdown of the weekend is available on the Ennismore Eagles website at Schedule of Events.

For anyone unable to attend the weekend but still wishing to help, a GoFundMe campaign has also been established to support Mattais and his family.

Donations can be made online through their GoFundMe page.

EMHA will also have information available throughout the weekend for those wishing to make a direct donation to the family.

While the original purpose of Hockey Weekend in Ennismore has always been to bring the association together and help make hockey more affordable for local families, this year's event has taken on a different meaning.

For Mattais's teammates, it is an opportunity to stand behind someone they've shared the ice with for years. For the association and the wider community, it is a chance to help a young person and his family during an incredibly difficult time.

As Joore put it, the support already shown has been overwhelming, and she couldn't be prouder of the people working to make this year's event special.

The message from the Ennismore Eagles is simple: Mattais and his family have a community behind them.

Peterborough Police Service Report Break-and-Enter Incidents Down 15 Per Cent From Last Year

The Peterborough Police Service reported 193 break-and-enter incidents from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year, down 29 from the same period last year, a 15 per cent decrease.

Photo courtesy of the Peterborough Police Service.

This year, the Peterborough Police Service made 81 arrests in connection with the break-and-enter incidents, up by two from 2025.

Data on home invasions in Peterborough is available for the past three years (2022 -25) and is based on a proposed standardized definition of home invasion, which includes three criteria that must be met – the perpetrators entered the dwelling-house unlawfully, at least one person was home or returned home and at least one perpetrator used or threatened violence.  The Crime Analysis Unit of the Peterborough Police Service and the Ministry of the Solicitor General created this definition through a project.

Based on the proposed definition:

  • 56 incidents were identified as meeting the proposed home-invasion definition between 2022 and 2025.

  • 79 per cent involved an assault, while 18% involved stolen property.

  • 54 per cent of incidents resulted in victim injury.

  • The perpetrator was known to the victim in 74 per cent of incidents.

  • Only three incidents involved firearms.

  • There was a notable overlap between home invasions and intimate partner violence: approximately half (51 per cent) of female victims knew the perpetrator through an intimate relationship.

For Christine W, a routine morning at home turned into a life-changing moment when she checked her Ontario 49 ticket using the OLG app and discovered she had matched the winning numbers in the September 16th draw.

The Peterborough County woman couldn't quite believe what she was seeing.

“I checked my ticket on the OLG app and saw all those zeros,” Christine recalled in an Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) news release.

But perhaps the most surprising part of her win was what happened next. Rather than immediately sharing the news, Christine headed off to work and kept the $2 million discovery entirely to herself.

She didn't even tell her family.

In fact, she held onto the secret for five days before finally sharing the news with her daughter.

“It was the biggest secret of my life,” she said.

Now that the secret is out, Christine has a couple of exciting plans for her winnings. A trip to Bora Bora is on the wish list, along with helping her daughter purchase a home.

“This is a dream come true,” she said.

The winning $1 ticket was purchased at East End Market on Ottawa Street East in Havelock.

Ontario 49 offers a top prize of $2 million, making Christine's win a pretty remarkable return on a one-dollar ticket.

Congratulations to Christine on her incredible win!

Held on October 18th, the bake sale brought together players, organizers, bakers and community members for a sweet way to support an important cause.

The $1,000 donation came from proceeds raised during the fundraiser, with plenty of people doing their part by preparing treats, helping organize the event or stopping by to pick up something delicious.

The money will support the PRHC Foundation and its work helping provide exceptional cancer care close to home at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

It was a great team effort from the Ice Kats and everyone who helped make the fundraiser a success.

And as an added bonus, the team also skated away with a win that day!

Congratulations to the Ice Kats on a successful fundraiser and a great example of what can happen when a team comes together for its community.
