Little Lakers Night Returns In Support of Five Counties Children’s Centre At Peterborough Lakers's Final Home Game

Five Counties Children’s Centre (FCCC) and the Peterborough Lakers are teaming up again for the second annual Little Lakers Night fundraiser on July 11.

“Our first-ever Little Lakers Night was a great success, and we’re pleased at the generosity of the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers to again partner with us on Little Lakers Night 2.0,” says Scott Pepin, FCCC CEO. “Not only will the game feature amazing lacrosse action, many members of our Five Counties family will also play starring roles throughout the game.”

All proceeds support Five Counties’ Building Abilities for Life campaign which allows more kids and youth in the region to access the life-changing treatment services they need when needed according to a press release.

FCCC families will participate in the ceremonial pre-game ball drop and enjoy a behind-the-scenes experience with the Lakers. Dozens of Five Counties kids and families will also enjoy free tickets to the game – something they have done all season through the Five Counties Ticket Assist Program.

“Five Counties has played a big role throughout the years in our family, and we’re grateful to have this incredible Centre serving families in our community,” says Len Powers, a FCCC ambassador and Lakers’ board member. “The Lakers are very proud to support the Centre’s work and are very pleased to again host Little Lakers Night on July 11.”

Families can join pre-game festivities starting at 7 p.m. Face painting for kids by donation, freezies for sale, pass the bucket, and the chance to buy commemorative Little Lakers Night T-shirts in support of Five Counties are available.

A silent auction will be held during the game. Items include two tickets to Canada’s Wonderland, a Crayola Prize Pack, and jewelry from local artist Valerie Davidson.

New this year for Little Lakers Night is the debut of a specially designed warm-up jersey created by a local youth. Lakers players will wear these jerseys during their pre-game warm-up session. These jerseys, sponsored by Merrett Home Hardware, will be available in an online auction.

Former Peterborough Pete Goaltender Signs One-Year Deal With Belleville Senators

Former Peterborough Pete and two-time OHL Champion goaltender Michael Simpson has signed a one-year, one-way, American Hockey League contract with the Belleville Senators for the 2024-25 season.

“I think signing a one-year deal just makes you have to keep the mindset all season that I need to earn the next contract so I feel it will keep me hungry to continue to work hard every day,” explained Simpson.

He was selected by the Petes in the 10th round, 193rd overall, by the Petes in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. During the 2022-23 season, he lead the Petes to an OHL Championship and won the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the playoff MVP.

As an over-age goaltender this past season, Simpson was traded to the Knights for goaltender Zach Bowen and Kingston Frontenac’s third-round pick in 2025 on Sept. 26 last year.

With the Knights, Simpson had 34 wins in 48 starts to help his hometown team win this year’s OHL Championship.

After finishing his OHL career as a two-time champion, the phone call meant the world to Simpson.

“It was a goal to try and earn a pro deal And for it to be in Belleville it’s great because it’s still pretty close to home and seems like it could be a great fit,” said Simpson. “I’m really excited to play for the Sens.”

Peterborough Lakers Downed From Two Hat Tricks By Defending-Champion Six Nations Arrows in 14-7 Loss

A pair of hat tricks from the defending-Mann Cup Champion Six Nations Arrows easily takes down the Lakers in a 14-7 loss at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Six Nations struck early and often in the first period. Austin Staats opened the game with a pair of goals in under four minutes for a 2-0 lead. Peterborough matched the defending champions with two power-play goals thanks to Holden Cattoni and Joe Resetarits.

The game was a streak of runs as Six Nations got the next three goals including a pair from Dhane Smith, whose second score came with six seconds left in the frame for a 5-2 lead.

The second period looked just like the first as Six Nations scored another five goals to Peterborough’s two. Former Laker Eli McLaughlin recorded a hat trick against Peterborough with all three goals in coming from the second period. Thomas Hoggarth was the only Laker that recorded a goal with two —including a power-play goal— that period with the score 10-4 going into the third.

Six Nations came out strong again with three straight goals to put Peterborough in a giant hole. The Lakers had a three-goal run of their own but it was too little, too late. Reigning MSL MVP Lyle Thompson put the cherry on top for Six Nations with a hat trick goal over halfway through the third period as the last goal of the game.

“That’s the joy of having another chance to play them. We learned what to expect,” said Resetarits. “Obviously, they’re a phenomenal team. We can’t just sit back and accept that. We have to go out there and play and take it to them as much as we can, dictate the pace as much as we can. Try to help the defence out: offensively, we have to start putting the ball in the net.”

The Arrows continued their undefeated season with a 14-7 with over the Lakers, moving to a 6-0 record while Peterboroough drops to 4-4. This is the Lakers’s third home loss of four games so far this season.

The Lakers are off to enjoy the Canada Day long weekend and return to action against the Brooklin Lacrosse Club at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby on Wednesday.

Peterborough Petes Return to Local Community Rinks For Preseason Games

The Peterborough Petes preseason schedule has been released, with three home games in local community arenas announced on Thursday afternoon.

The Petes start preseason on Sept. 1 as they host the Niagara IceDogs at the Jack Burger Sports Complex in Port Hope. After an away game in Guelph, Peterborough will host the Sudbury Wolves at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre on Sept. 8. The Petes will then travel to Kingston before wrapping up the preseason at the Cavan Monaghan Community Centre in Millbrook as they welcome the Guelph Storm on Sept. 21.

The Petes’s full 2024 preseason schedule cis as follows:

• Sept. 1 - Niagara @ Peterborough - 2:05 p.m. (Jack Burger Sports Complex - Port Hope)

• Sept. 6 - Peterborough @ Guelph - 7:07 p.m.

Peterborough Lakers Team With Bobcaygeon Brewing Company to Launch Lakers Edition of Cottage Lager

Bobcaygeon Brewing Company and Century 21 Lakers have partnered to launch their new limited release, ‘Lakers edition’ of a Cottage Lager, announced on Wednesday night.

The drink is available during the season at all Lakers home games. The can feature a mesh Lakers jersey-inspired logo with signature red and blue colours alongside the traditional Bobcaygeon Brewing loon and tree line.

The beer is also available at the Bobcaygeon Brewing Company retail store in Peterborough at 649 The Parkway and at local farmers markets, including those in Peterborough, Lakefield, Bobcaygeon, Lindsay, and Clarington.

Peterborough Lakers's Offense Erupts Early And Takes Commanding 13-7 Win Over Owen Sound

The Lakers never had to look back after the first period and held the lead for a 13-7 win over the Owen Sound North Stars at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.

Holden Cattoni kicked off the scoring for the Lakers, 8:42 into the game. Owen Sound quickly countered with two goals of their own in 11 seconds for the 2-1 lead. A pair of Turner Evans goals and one from Thomas Hoggarth had Peterborough regain the lead 4-2 and never fell behind since. After a Tyler Halls unassisted goal for Owen Sound, Peterborough capped off a six-goal period thanks to scores from Joe Resetarits and Cattoni to make it 6-3 after one.

The second stanza was all Peterborough. They blanked Owen Sound and scored four goals to extend their lead to 10-3. Koleton Marquis tacked on a pair while Resetarits and Hoggath netted their second score of the game.

Peterborough continued their run as Hoggath got the hat trick to mark the Lakers’s seventh-straight goal of the game. Owen Sound finally found the back of the net again as Tanner Buck rang off back-to-back goals including a power-play score.

Cattoni got his hat trick with an unassisted goal to make it 12-5. Buck got a hat trick of his own on the power play. Dante Kulas added another goal for Owen Sound but with 90 seconds left, it was too little too late. Taite Cattoni added an extra goal for good measure and Peterborough earned back-to-back wins over Owen Sound in the home-and-home series that started Saturday.

The Lakers will have a heavyweight bout as they host the defending Mann Cup-champion Six Nations Chiefs on Thursday.

Peterborough's Eight-Goal Second Period Leads to 15-8 Bounce Back Win Over Owen Sound

The first period saw both teams evenly matched, splitting goals with three apiece. Turner Evans and Holden Cattoni got Peterborough out to a 2-0 lead but Owen Sound rung off three straight to take the lead. Evans scored again in the dying six seconds of the period to make it 3-3 at the end of the first.

Peterborough exploded with three goals in less than three minutes to kick off the second thanks to Rob Hellyer, Austin Hasen and Dylan Hutchison. While Owen Sound responded with two goals, Peterborough reclaimed their three-goal lead thanks to back-to-back power-play goals from Hellyer and Thomas Hoggarth. Taite Cattoni tacked on another to try and keep the game out of reach for Owen Sound.

The North Stars kept battling and scored another two goals including a power-play score to make it 9-7. Peterborough went step-for-step, notching two goals of their own from Hellyer (to get the hat trick) and Taite, capping off the eight-goal period. Tyler Brown scored Owen Sound’s fifth score of the frame to make it 11-8 going into the third.

It was all Peterborough from here as they shut out Owen Sound while scoring four of their own. Hasen got a goal exactly halfway through the period while Hoggath and Mitch Ogilvie joined in the scoring fun. Hasen capped off his night with a hat trick with 4:03 left in regulation and that was the last goal of the night to give Peterborough the 15-8 victory.

“We knew they were going to come and really compete. They’re a young, athletic team, and they challenged us and pushed the pace. Exactly what we thought we’d see,” said Bobby Keast, Lakers’ defensive coach. “I thought our offence moved the ball extremely well which made it really hard for them to use their energy to their advantage. Defensively, I thought we made some adjustments and were able to equal their energy and build on it for the third and outwork them.”

Lakers goaltender Landon Kells got the win over Owen Sound’s Kaleb Martin between the pipes.

The Lakers have two home games this week with a rematch of the North Stars on Tuesday. The game will honour the 1984 and 2004 Mann Cup-champion Laker teams.

Fourth Annual Lakers Alumni Golf Tournament Returns To Support Peterborough Grassroots Lacrosse Programs

Over 90 golfers got their clubs out at the Keystone Links Golf & Country Club for the fourth annual Peterborough Lakers Alumni golf tournament held on Friday.

The tournament was sidelined last year but returned this year, seeing more golfers than ever.

“It just shows that the community still likes to get out and have fun together,” said Dean Porter, Alumni president.

The event honoured the 1984 and 2004 Mann Cup Champion Lakers. Several alumni, such as Paul Evans and Johnny ‘Shooter’ Davis, were in attendance and performed the ceremonial tee-off at the first hole.

“Lacrosse brings together a group of guys that were together in 84',” said Porter. “We got a good turnout here; they all came back; most of these guys still see each other and they all come to the alumni box during the games throughout the season.”

All proceeds go towards the Peterborough Lakers Alumni who support the Peterborough area's sustainability and grassroots lacrosse programs.

“Lacrosse is huge in Peterborough,” said Porter.

Trent Athletics Raise $78,000 For Student-Athlete Scholarships In 18th Annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament

The Green and White Scholarship is offered to student-athletes who have achieved an average of 70 per cent and have been recruited for their athletics skills and abilities. Returning student-athletes must maintain that average to be considered for a multi-year scholarship.

“The green and white scholarship has relieved some of the financial hardships that student-athletes struggle with,” said Natalie Fournier, Trent student-athlete and tournament keynote speaker. “Not only do these scholarships help financially but they symbolize the unique community surrounding Trent Athletics.”

Thomas Hoggath's Five-Goal Game Unable to Lift Lakers Past Oakville In 9-8 Overtime Loss

The scoring did not start until just over 8:30 into the game as Andrew Kew struck first for Oakville to finally break the ice. Matt Gilrawy answered back less than a minute later to tie the game.

Hoggarth tacked on a power-play goal with his first of five for a 2-1 lead. Alex Kew tied the game up in a hurry with less than eight minutes left in the period. Hoggarth capped off the period with his second with 1:26 left to make it 3-2 for the Lakers at the end of one.

After letting in an early Oakville goal, Hoggath once again scored and got the hat trick not halfway through the game. Joe Resetaris chipped in with a power-play goal for a 5-3 lead.

However, it was short-lived as the Rock scored four consecutive goals to take a 7-5 lead including two goals from Andrew for the hat trick.

The third saw the fewest goals scored between both teams with four but it fell in Peterborough’s favour. Joe Hiltz opened the scoring less than two minutes in to cut the deficit to one for the Lakers. Ryan Lanchberry answered back with a goal for Oakville to restore the two-goal lead.

With less than five minutes left in regulation, Hoggarth rung off two back-to-back goals to tie the game and send the game to overtime.

The night belonged to Oakville as Sam English scored his second of the night unassisted to put the Rock over the Lakers and own a 2-0 record over Peterborough.

“With all the success we had in the past, I think it’s good for us to go through it right now, get it over with at the start of the year so we can find our way during the playoffs,” said Hoggarth.

Doug Buchan made 46 saves, while NLL Goaltender of the Year Nick Rose made 58 saves to get the win for Oakville.

“I think we had our shots and Rosey played well,” said Hoggarth. “He played unreal. He’s one of the top goalies in the league and he proved it tonight. Next time those’ll drop for us.”

The Lakers hit Owen Sound to take on the North Stars for their first meeting on Saturday at 7 p.m.
