Best Thing Ever: Peterborough Girl Sarah Edge Celebrating Her 10th Anniversary With New Heart By Hosting Blood Clinic

special clinic poster.jpg

Sarah Edge was only six weeks old when she first begin experiencing heart problems. By the time she was 15 months, and her health in severe decline, she was placed on a heart transplant waiting list. Her family was afraid Sarah would not make it, and she was down to only 15 pounds. After weeks on the waiting list, Sarah’s mother received the miracle call that the family had been waiting for: A heart had been found!

At 18 months old, Sarah received the heart transplant she so desperately needed. Throughout her treatment, she also needed 66 units of blood products to help beat the odds that were not in her favour.

Ten years later after her miracle heart transplant and the generosity of blood donors, Sarah is giving back. In celebration of her post-transplant anniversary, the 11-year-old from Peterborough hopes that the blood donor clinic she and her family are organizing will bring out donors willing to help save the lives of children like her.

Sarah’s Celebratory Clinic is Tuesday, November 5th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at  Peterborough Blood Donor Clinic (55 George St. at the corner of George and Perry St.). Members of the community are encouraged to come out and support Sarah and other children in need of blood and blood products, as well as organs. Call 1 888 2 Donate (1-888-236-283) or go online to Blood.ca to book an appointment to donate blood. In addition, it takes only minutes to register to be an organ or tissue donor. Visit Beadonor.ca to find out how.

Riverview Zoo Holding Sloth Mania Fundraiser For Calgary Zoo

BUdz4LsCcAA7MlJ.jpg

Riverview Park and Zoo is proud to announce a fundraising event in support of the Calgary Zoo’s 2 By 2 Rebuild the Zoo campaign. In June, Calgary Zoo suffered an estimated $50 million in damage due to a devastating flood when the Bow River overflowed its banks. The flood caused severe damage to most of the zoo and forced 34 animals out of their permanent exhibits. Within days after the flood, a call for help to CAZA (Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums) went out. Riverview Park and Zoo was selected to take Calgary’s two-toed sloths, Porsche and Ferrari.

“Sloth Mania” will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm and will feature an afternoon schedule of special "Meet the Keeper" activities (including two sessions with the sloths), a barbeque, face painting, etc. There will also be raffles that  include opportunities to win a behind-the-scenes tour of the Park and Zoo as well as an up close and personal feeding encounter with Porsche and Ferrari. Donate online at here.

The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service, Community Services Unit will be collecting food donations from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Thursday October 10th and Friday, October 11th to support Kawartha Food Share.

Officers and Kawartha Food Share volunteers will be at the Sobeys on Lansdowne Street West, Sobeys on Towerhill, and the Foodland on Sherbrooke Street the Thursday and Friday before Thanksgiving. They will also be collecting food donations at the Foodland in Lakefield in support of the Lakefield Food Bank on Friday, October 11th.

“This is a very busy time at local food banks and we appreciate the continued support we receive from the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service. Last year the Cram a Cruiser Food Drive raised over 12,000 lbs. of food,” says Dave Ralph, Chair of Kawartha Food Share.

Kawartha Food Share appreciates the support Peterborough and County residents offer in the fight against hunger in our community. Without this generosity and on-going assistance, it would truly be impossible to reach out to over 7,700 people a month who are in need. Kawartha Food Share also supplies healthy snacks to student nutrition programs who serve over 158,000 meals in area schools each and every month.

Here's The Community Foundation Of Greater Peterborough List Of Events For Philanthrophy Month 2013

The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough has announced exciting programs celebrating Philanthropy Month in November. The month, which includes National Philanthropy Day on November 14th, recognizes and celebrates the profound impact that philanthropy—and those people active in the philanthropic community—has made to our lives, our communities and our world.

The following events are a part of the Community Foundation’s initiatives in November and are open to the public:

4th Annual Philanthropy Forum, Thursday, November 14, 9:00am – 6:00pm, Peterborough Golf & Country Club
The Community Foundation will once again celebrate National Philanthropy Day by hosting Peterborough’s fourth annual Philanthropy Forum. The Forum consists of interactive sessions, breakthrough workshops and a celebration of philanthropy in Peterborough. The unique educational program throughout the day provides board members, staff and volunteers of non-profit organizations with valuable, practical, professional information. A full program description is available at Cfgp.ca/forum.

Creative Cocktail + Philanthropy, Thursday, November 14, 6:30pm - 9:30pm Peterborough Golf & Country Club
The Community Foundation will once again partner with Peterborough Economic Development to host a special edition of Creative Cocktail with a focus on philanthropy and the creative economy. This rousing evening will include inspiring stories of impact while guests mingle among our community’s knowledge workers. Creative Cocktail is designed to bring businesses and professionals in the creative economy together to inspire each other, make business connections and generate collaborations. The non-profit sector is a vital component of Peterborough’s social and economic wellbeing.

Timeraiser, Wednesday, November 20, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, Market Hall
New to this year’s Philanthropy Month line up, the Timeraiser (see YouTube video above) is a silent art auction with a twist: guests bid volunteer time (hours), rather than money, on works of art by local emerging artists. Timeraiser artists are paid for their work, so not only are we building volunteerism but we’re also supporting emerging artists in our community! Learn more about how to become a Timeraiser artist, purchase a ticket or get involved by visiting Peterborough.timeraiser.ca.

Peterborough Father & Son Paddle Trent Severn In Support Of Prostate Cancer Research

Andy & Nick Fauset

Andy & Nick Fauset

Andy Fauset and his son Nick are back at it again this year with their 2nd Annual Paddle For A Cause, kayaking the Trent-Severn Waterway from Trenton to Peterborough to raise awareness and fundraise in support of Prostate Cancer Canada—Prostate Cancer Awareness Week is September 16th to 23rd.

Last September , Andy and Nick paddled the other half of the Trent-Severn from Port Severn to Peterborough’s Silver Bean Café. That 14-day kayak journey successfully raised $7,100 for Prostate Cancer Canada’s research and education programs.

The pair have both known individuals affected by prostate cancer, and wanted to do their part toward supporting research and spreading awareness. “For my father and I, the fundraiser represents an opportunity to spend time together doing something we love, while raising awareness of a prominent, yet preventable health concern affecting men,” says Nick. “Some sons don’t have the opportunity to do this with their fathers because of diseases like prostate cancer."

Andy and Nick encourage any paddlers to join them for any length of time on their Paddle for a Cause 2013 journey. There will also be a fundraiser finale hosted at the Silver Bean Café on September 29th, at noon, open to the Peterborough community.

For a complete schedule of Andy and Nick’s route or to make a donation to Paddle for a Cause, visit their website Paddleforacause.ca. (This fundraiser is registered with Prostate Cancer Canada.) To email Andy and Nick, click here.
