PtboCanada Review: New Art Shows Open At Artspace And Cannery Art Centre

This past Friday night, two new art shows opened, in venues close together—a short walk on a cold January night that provided a sort of cleansing of the palette if you will. That cleansing was required as the shows, and the respective artists, could not have been more different. One was from the old guard of the Peterborough art scene, the other was a fresh new face.

ARTSPACE: MICKY RENDERS "PAINTING WITH LIGHT"
Artspace hosted new photographic images from longtime local personality Micky Renders. Renders, who teaches art at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School, usually creates in oils with a brush and had been doing so for 30 years. This show titled "Painting With Light" represented a new foray for the artist. This time, her choosen medium was photography, and the light captured through the lens over space and time. This show is worth a look as it's interesting to see artists we think we know stepping out of their safe space.

"Painting With Light" is open at Artspace until January 29th. Artspace is located at 378 Aylmer Street North.

CANNERY ART CENTRE: JAMIE CAMPBELL "DON'T FEED THE MONSTERS - BOXED MONSTERS & OTHER CURIOSITIES"
Over at Cannery Art Centre, the upstairs gallery features new work from local artistic upstart Jamie Campbell and her show entitled "Don't Feed the Monsters - Boxed Monsters & Other Curiosities". Through stylized illustrations, whimsical colours and fun, quirky compositions (see pic below), Campbell is presenting an entire world of mythical creatures for us to wonder over.
This is art for everyone. It's welcoming. The technique is bold and your attention will be pulled from one piece to the next.

"Boxed Monsters" is open at the Cannery Art Centre until the end of the month of January. The Cannery is located at 168 Hunter Street West.

Learn All About Habitat for Humanity Peterborough At Upcoming Sessions

Our local branch of Habitat for Humanity will be holding information sessions over the next few months as a way to promote community involvement and answer any questions you may have on how and what you can do to volunteer with the organization.  

There are many volunteer positions that are available for those who wish to play an active role with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Last fall, Habitat completed three more homes in Peterborough.

Tips From Peterborough Police On How To Protect Your Home From Break And Enters

From Peterborough-Lakefield Community Police Service media release today:

Break and Enters:
On the 6th of January sometime between 2:00 pm and 9:00 pm a rash of break and enters were reported in Peterborough. On London Street suspects entered a residence after smashing the glass out of the back door. Once inside, they removed an unknown quantity of change and six bottles of Molson Canadian beer. On Dublin Street suspects entered a residence through a kitchen window. It is unknown at this time if any items were stolen. Witness watched an adult male wearing a beige jacket leaving the area. On Parkhill Road West suspects entered a residence through a rear window. Once inside they removed a laptop computer and on Bolivar Street suspects entered a residence by forcing open a back door. Once inside they removed approximately $5.00 in loose change. It would appear that the same suspects are responsible for these entries. Residents are reminded to keep their doors and windows locked at all time, report suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood, leave exterior house lighting on, keep driveways and sidewalks shovelled and pick up newspapers and mail. Anyone with information on these break and enters is asked to call the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

Peterborough Snofest Winter Carnival Begins This Weekend!

Snofest gets underway this Saturday (January 8th) and runs through the 16th at various locations around the Patch. Opening ceremonies take place starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Lansdowne Place. Snofest has been an annual tradition providing entertainment and activities for the whole family for more than 30 years. Check out the Snowfest brochure for the event and location listings throughout the city during the carnival.

Woman Drives Vehicle Through The Door Of A Tim Hortons In The Patch (And Then Orders Coffee)

So we ordered a coffee in the Tim Hortons this morning on Lansdowne (the one in front of Sobeys near the Parkway), and asked one of the servers, What's up with the door being boarded up? (see pic at left).

She explained that yesterday morning during her shift, an older woman basically drove her car right into the store, then got out of the vehicle, came in the store (well, she was already in), ordered coffee, and sat down. The server said she (and the staff) had never seen anything quite like that before.

Obviously police were on scene shortly thereafter.

Just kidding on the "exclusive". But yes, 10-digit dialing is here now (give it a try), and by March 12, 2011, will be mandatory for all calls from the 705 area code (911 excluded). And a new area code 249 will be added in as well because we're out of 705's.

What does all this mean? Well, it will take longer to call Jenny. And an extra one or two seconds of your life to make the call. But hey, you'll be getting more exercise punching those numbers in.

PtboCanada Was There: Canadian Canoe Museum Presents Canoes & Trains

The Canadian Canoe Museum held a free Open House on Sunday, and got help in the celebrations from model railroad enthusiasts. Clubs from Peterborough, Cobourg and Lindsay showed off their 1/87th scale trains and miniature villages.

The local group Peterborough Model Railroaders is made up of a group of nine who meet up monthly to talk about their passion. All of them have had a part in creating the display, which features a miniature village that would be reminiscent of Peterborough in the 1950s. 

With working lights and sounds of an actual locomotive, the display captured the imagination of everyone in attendance as there were plenty of details to see.
