The Elk In Douro Is Becoming Famous
/A farmer in Douro township is puzzled why an elk has decided to make his farm his homebase. People have tweeted us spottings over the past couple weeks, and the elk (see screengrabs below from this CHEX Newswatch story) is getting famous—people have been sneaking onto the property to try and spot it according to Newswatch, and stopping their cars along the busy Highway 28 to sneak a peek.

COLUMN 3 TOPIC: 5 Essential Tips for Men on a First Date
1. Compliment Her. The first few minutes are crucial on a first date. It’s important to check out your date in a subtle fashion, and take notice of the efforts she has put towards meeting you. Often, women will go to huge lengths to prepare for their date. Simply stating “You look great!” will absolutely make her day and give her a wonderful first impression of you.
2. Ask Questions. Getting to know someone can be easier than you think. When you are meeting someone for a first time, it’s important to take control of your nerves and put your best foot forward. Asking your date questions about travel, family and activities they are interested in is a great way to break the ice. Remember: You are not in a job interview so don’t treat it like one!
How to control first date nerves? Our matchmakers often suggest treating the meeting as if you are reconnecting with an old friend. You will want to learn more about “who they are today”, and your anxieties will naturally subside.
3. Listen. She’s telling you information that you will want to catch so lean in to hear her, maintain eye contact and let her know you are paying attention. First dates can have that awkward silence, but if you are listening then you can create another question based on information she is touching on.
4. Pick up the cheque. Making the first move when the bill comes gives your date the impression that you are a gentleman and responsible. If she fights you to contribute, you can decline once, but if she insists then agree to split it.
5. Graciously end the date. Thank her for making the time to meet with you and let her know you had a wonderful time. Suggest swapping contact info (if you haven’t already), and let her know you will be in touch relatively soon. If you are into her, then make sure to plan a second date within a week’s time—providing she's interested. If you are not interested in seeing her again, then contact her and let her know you are not interested in moving forward.

/On Saturday, October 26th, Queen Elizabeth Public School (located at 830 Barnardo Avenue) will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary. To honour this occasion, they'll be hosting an Open House from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. that day. Current and former staff and students are of course invited, as well as the community. When Ian Kyle retired as a soldier in 2008 after 34 years of active service, he still had the military on his mind. That’s why on January 22, 2009 he and his wife, Janet, opened Sarge's Army Surplus at 291 George St N, located directly across the street from Showplace in downtown Peterborough.
As you can imagine, Sarge's forte is in offering military surplus gear from around the world. This includes all sorts from small accessories and all aspects of military clothing to outdoor camping gear ranging from tents and sleeping bags to extreme weather gear graded for arctic and even jungle use! What Ian and Janet also offer at the store—and what has really taken off for them—is paintball and air-soft gear. The hobbies for both are popular now and Sarge's is the top supplier in the area for high end equipment.
When you enter the store, you are immediately met with product from floor to ceiling. People are often enamoured with how much is available and the overall display of things they could never imagine would be available in our city. Ian uses the saying that “It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it” which you can tell his store operates by!
Along with his knowledgeable staff including Dave and Ryan, Sarge's offer rentals and are also qualified to do repairs of much of the gear that they offer. One of the most interesting parts of the shop is the collectibles and memorabilia section that is offered. Here you will find items from all around the world ranging from old military medals to badges and even pre-worn uniforms.
Ian and Janet are still very much involved in the local military scene and often attend and set up booths at military themed shows. They are proud to support our local Veterans, celebrate Veterans Awareness Day, and happily offer discounts to armed forces, scouts, and the cadets.

Riverview Zoo Holding Sloth Mania Fundraiser For Calgary Zoo

Riverview Park and Zoo is proud to announce a fundraising event in support of the Calgary Zoo’s 2 By 2 Rebuild the Zoo campaign. In June, Calgary Zoo suffered an estimated $50 million in damage due to a devastating flood when the Bow River overflowed its banks. The flood caused severe damage to most of the zoo and forced 34 animals out of their permanent exhibits. Within days after the flood, a call for help to CAZA (Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums) went out. Riverview Park and Zoo was selected to take Calgary’s two-toed sloths, Porsche and Ferrari.
“Sloth Mania” will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm and will feature an afternoon schedule of special "Meet the Keeper" activities (including two sessions with the sloths), a barbeque, face painting, etc. There will also be raffles that include opportunities to win a behind-the-scenes tour of the Park and Zoo as well as an up close and personal feeding encounter with Porsche and Ferrari. Downtown Peterborough is known to have a
nighttime establishment for just about every type of crowd you can imagine and
for the most part all of the businesses are doing quite well. With so many
options available, one would think that opening up a new club in the heart of
the city would be a very tough sell! Lang Freeman and Sammy Shehadeh have proved that wrong.
In 2011, Lang, who was already running what was then Splice Lounge, was approached by Sammy with an idea to expand and bring an experience to Peterborough that wasn’t already available. It was on October 31, 2012 that ARIA opened in its location at 331 George St. N after an extensive eight month renovation project!

The club brings in some of the biggest traveling DJs around to throw down some
of the most epic parties you will ever experience! Lang and Sammy have spared
no expense inside the club equipping it with sound and light installation from the renowned Apex.
With club nights falling on Friday and Saturday, ARIA has time between events to plan out amazing ideas. They have developed a program called E-Life which is comprised of local businesses which strive to bring top quality food and entertainment to our great city!
Using Dolce Vita, which is part of the E-Life program as their primary caterer, ARIA has hosted some great events such as last year’s PeterTweeter Awards. They also had a PtboPride event, and host as many theme parties as can be imagined!
With so much space and time available between their massive club nights, it has become the goal of ARIA to become more of an all-encompassing entertainment facility and offer their space for different events throughout the week.
The layout of the club is perfect for bands to play in, to host upscale banquets and also to host weddings which they have started to plan for next year already.
Lang is a graduate of Trent University and has kept close ties with the school since his graduation. As such, ARIA has been proud to host Trent’s annual Glow Show, they have DJ’d intro fest and have also set up at Trent’s Vendor Show. What Lang is most proud of however is that ARIA secured a partnership with the school to run the entire Head of the Trent event with the university and rowing team.
