SPARK Photo Festival Launches App For Mapped Exhibits Around Peterborough

Seeing the work of 26 artists throughout April became more convenient as the 2022 SPARK Photo Festival launched a mobile app mapping exhibits across Peterborough that launched Monday.

“Big Yellow Taxi” by Heather Doughty. Doughty developed a passion for nature combined with her photography and is located at 129 Hunter St. W. Photo courtesy of SPARK Photo Festival.

The free app Toureka! — developed by Peterborough’s Brad Carson — contains digital versions of each exhibit with information and provides pinpoint locations for viewing each piece in person. The festival runs throughout April until the 30th.

The interactive map on the website is the web-browser version of the app. There is also have a print brochure (with an old-school map), free to pick up at exhibit venues.

“These new digital tools allow visitors to find more information about the photographers, the venues, and exhibit hours while on-the-go, at the same time reducing our environmental impact,” says Ken Powell, Chair, SPARK Board of Directors. “The photographers and venues put in a huge amount of effort creating their exhibits and we’re making it easier for everyone to find them and tour the region throughout the month.”

The app’s funding came from the Ontario Trillium Foundation Community Building Fund. The grant covered a portion of the operating costs to help SPARK recover from the effects of the pandemic.

There will be a QR code posted at each exhibit that visitors can scan to visit the SPARK website and get direct links to the interactive Festival map and the app stores or get the Toureka! app online. Everything you need to visit SPARK is at your fingertips.

YMCA Welcomes The Ontario-Federal Child Care Agreement

The province of Ontario and the federal government have signed a $13.2-billion agreement to lower the cost of child care in the province to an average of $10 a day by September 2025, on Monday.

“This is a historic moment for children and families across Ontario. Thanks to this agreement child care will be more affordable and more accessible to working families,” said David Allan, president and CEO of YMCA Central East Ontario. “The federal provincial child care agreement will benefit our children and communities for generations to come.”

In a press release, the YMCA notes that access to licensed, high-quality child care gives parents, and women in particular, a choice to enter or return to the workforce while ensuring their children are in safe environments.

“And now the work of rolling this out begins, and it won’t be easy. It will be worth it though as we lower the cost of care for our families and raise wages for staff. Both of these groups richly deserve it,” said Allan. “Our YMCA is looking forward to working with all levels of government and our community partners to bring this agreement to life.”

City Of Peterborough Consulting the Public On Creation Of A Municipal Services Corporation For Affordable Housing

The City of Peterborough is consulting with the public on the creation of a Municipal Services Corporation for Affordable Housing to allow it to manage the debt needed to build affordable housing in the community.

The public is invited to review the information about the project and provide feedback at connectptbo.ca/msc.

Setting up a Municipal Services Corporation, or MSC, would allow the City to retain control over future housing development projects. As well, a MSC that operates as a Government Business Enterprise (GBE) would alleviate debt capacity issues for the City, which would enable new approaches to developing rental housing.

Results of this consultation will be included with recommendations for the creation of the Municipal Services Corporation in a report that is expected to be considered by Council in May.

More information, including background on Municipal Services Corporations and previous reports to Council are available at connectptbo.ca/msc.

Bruce, who has been serving successfully as interim vice-president since September 2020, is a highly-regarded researcher with an established career at the University for nearly 20 years. In the role, she will continue to oversee the Office of Research & Innovation, strengthening and expanding research activity at Trent, both within academia and through strategic partnerships.

“Dr. Cathy Bruce is an inspirational exceptional administrator with a passion for research, innovation, and mentorship. She brings an exceptional combination of skill and experience to this key role,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “I look forward to the opportunity to continue to work with her in a way that will advance Trent’s reputation and performance as a leading research-intensive institution.”

In the role, Bruce will build on the successes of her term as interim vice-president, during which time she led the development of new policies, created Early Career Researcher Awards, and established a new Trent-specific Research Grant Incentive Fund of $265,000.

As vice-president, Bruce will coordinate the development of a set of strategic research priorities for the University to deepen connections between academic programming and research, intensify existing research activity, and identify diverse and interdisciplinary areas of research potential. She will oversee all research activity at Trent and research partnerships with government, industry and community partners, while supporting priority initiatives for the University such as Trent’s long-term care research partnership, Cleantech Commons research and development, and the work of the EaRTH District.

“I am thrilled and also humbled by this opportunity to build on the considerable success of the Office of Research & Innovation at Trent,” said Bruce. “I consider this role as one of service and support to the University, local and global communities, faculty, staff and students—and as I have spent most of my career in education, my approach will be, and as it always been, to focus on nurturing the potential, passion and expertise of others.”

Bruce is also a full professor in the Trent School of Education, where she has been conducting and publishing federally-funded research throughout her career.

Her research focus is mathematics learning and the role of spatial reasoning and self-efficacy in that learning. Bruce acts as lead researcher for the Trent Math Education Research Collaborative (TMERC), a research program that enables collaborative research with teachers, other researchers, mathematics educators, early childhood educators, and school districts. She also recently served as president of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education.

A co-author of two math professional texts based on her research program, with a third coming out this spring, Bruce has been recognized as a leading educator and researcher.

She was named one of Ontario’s most outstanding university teachers by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) in 2012 and was recipient of the Eduardo Flores International Leadership Award in 2015 for her leadership in action research.

Bruce holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto; an M.A. from OISE of the University of Toronto; and a B.A. and B.Ed. from York University.

COVID-19 Prevention And Treatment Support Available For Immunocompromised Residents

Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) and Peterborough Public Health (PPH) would like to remind residents who are immunocompromised or on immunosuppressive medication that additional support is available for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.

Residents who are immunocompromised due to a health condition or medication side effect are at increased risk for moderate to severe symptoms due to COVID-19 infection.

“The COVID-19 Assessment Centre at PRHC is available to all residents who have moderate symptoms of COVID-19, such as a more troublesome cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing,” said Dr. Lynn Mikula, EVP, Chief of Staff and Chief Medical Executive at PRHC.

Mikula says if residents are experiencing modarate symptoms they should contact their family practitioner or call the Assessment Centre at 705-876-5086 and be clear about the symptoms. Depending on symptoms patients may be eligible for PCR testing and treatment for COVID-19.

“Anyone who is experiencing severe, potentially life-threatening symptoms, such as extreme shortness of breath, chest pain, new confusion, inability to wake up or stay awake, should call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Department,” she said.

Patients who are immunocompromised due to a health condition or medication and who are experiencing moderate symptoms of COVID-19 are eligible for PCR testing and treatment – such as Paxlovid – and antiviral medication. Antiviral medications are administered to patients with confirmed, positive cases of COVID-19 as a way to reduce the spread of the virus post-infection.

“Eligibility for COVID-19 treatment is expanding, and some individuals may not know they are eligible for treatment,” said Dr. Mikula. “We recommend that any resident with moderate symptoms of COVID-19 reach out to their family practitioner or the PRHC Assessment Centre to see if they are eligible.”

Additional criteria for COVID-19 testing can be found on PRHC’s website. Appointments at the COVID-19 Assessment Centre are available seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and must be booked by calling 705-876-5086.

In addition, residents who are immunocompromised or on immunosuppressive medication are eligible for a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Residents who are eligible for a fourth dose can bring their referral form to receive a fourth dose at any Peterborough Public Health COVID-19 vaccine clinic.
