The event took place on Sept. 9 at Kawartha Golf Club and was originally announced by Mayor Jeff Leal on Aug. 13.

“I want to sincerely thank all the participants and sponsors who so generously supported these two important causes in our community,” he said. “Special thanks to Nigel Lister for organizing the tournament and to Blake Ulrich, Jamie Carter and all the staff at Kawartha Golf Club for their hard work to make the event run smoothly.”

The tournament drew 80 golfers that saw community members, local businesses, and city leaders for a day of friendly competition and fundraising.

“We are so appreciative of Mayor Leal selecting KFS as one of the recipients of the Inaugural Peterborough Mayoral Invitational,” said Ashlee Aitken, KFS general manager. “Food Insecurity is unfortunately on the rise in Peterborough and County and this financial support will allow us to supply our 37 member agencies with much needed food items to assist in feeding nearly 14,000 individuals. Thank you to all who participated in making this a fun day for two fantastic causes.”

“We are so pleased to have been chosen and to have a role on such a tremendous day,” Teresa Jordan, CLTF executive director “Despite the rain, everyone was in high spirits, generous and interested. The personal connection that Mayor Leal has with Community Living helped to shine a light on what we aim to do each day in people's lives. It was a wonderful event, and we are so grateful for the support.”

Leal says he plans to run the event again next year.

Community Care Peterborough Reveals New Video to Rally Support and Volunteers

Community Care Peterborough (CCP) has released a new promotional video of its services to attract volunteers and financial support to continue serving seniors, announced at their office in East City on Tuesday morning.

In 2023, Community Care Peterborough volunteers provided nearly 85,000 hours of service. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

The video, ‘Life Changes, Community Doesn't,’ tells the story of a former volunteer named Sophie who uses the same services she once helped provide. The video highlights Community Care Peterborough’s programs, such as Meals on Wheels, transportation, wellness programs and support for those returning home from the hospital.

“This video reflects a powerful truth—circumstances may change as we age or face challenges, but our community is always there,” said Danielle Belair, CCP CEO. We want people to know that they play a critical role in sustaining this network of care.”

While all positions for volunteers are needed, Drivers are one of the higher priorities for CCP.

“We’re looking for roughly 30 drivers but extras are always good, explained Catherine Pink, CCP director of support services. “Every just one day a week. Every little bit helps.”

In addition to raising awareness of the organization's services, the video serves as a call to action for community members according to a press release.

Community Care Peterborough is actively seeking new volunteers to help deliver meals, provide rides to medical appointments, and offer companionship through its various wellness programs. The organization is also appealing to donors to help fund these critical services, as demand continues to grow.

“Our volunteers are the heart of what we do,” said Belair. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to reach as many people or provide the level of care our clients deserve. We hope this video inspires others to get involved and help us keep this community strong.”

Three Peterborough Lakers Capture Gold at World Lacrosse Box Championship

Peterborough Lakers’s Matt Gilray, Jake Withers and Zach Currier helped Team Canada defend their title by winning the men’s World Lacrosse Box Championship and a gold medal, defeating Team USA 13-7 at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, N.Y. on Sunday evening.

Team Canada outlasted 27 other teams en route to a sixth-straight championship. Canada was ranked number one heading into the tournament. They were placed in ‘Pool A’ against the following three top-ranked teams: Haudenosaunee, USA and England, respectively.

They handily defeated England on their first day of action on the 21st, 19-4 at the Utica University Nexus Center. The following day, Canada was victorious again, beating Haudenosaunee in a close game, 13-10 at the Adirondack Bank Center.

They capped off their pool play by beating their rivals, the USA, 14-10, at the Mary C. Winder Community Center at the Oneida Indian Nation. According to World Lacrosse, it had been almost a decade since the international lacrosse game was held on native land.

After being undefeated for three straight games, Canada was named the number one seed and advanced to the quarterfinals. They drew Japan and routed them 22-4 on Thursday.

Canada met a familiar foe in England in a rematch in the semifinals and achieved a better result, winning 20-3 to advance to the finals.

The win saw a longstanding rivalry for the finals, as Canada had a rematch against the USA for the championship. Fellow Lakers Joe Resetarits and Drew Hutchinson played for the Americans as foes in the final matchup of the tournament.

Canada scored three straight goals to begin the game. USA was able to claw back, making it a one-goal deficit at the half. Canada held a 4-3 lead into the half.

Coming out of the half, the Canadians went on a six-goal run to pull away from the USA. While the Americans played valiantly, Canada had another three-goal run after allowing two consecutive goals to pull away 13-5. USA tacked on two late goals, but it was too little, too late and Canada remained undefeated to capture the world championship title.

Currier scored one goal in the championship, his third in the tournament. With Gilray and Withers not registering a point in the finals, the former had three goals and one assist in the tournament while defenceman Withers scored one goal overall.

Peterborough’s Erica Evans played for Team Canada in the first-ever Women’s World Lacrosse Box Championship and her team’s undefeated run ended in the gold medal game. They lost 10-7 after USA had a five-goal run in a comeback after being down 7-5 almost halfway through the fourth quarter.

Evans was also named to the inaugural Women's All-World Team.

“Stephen has been an incredibly engaged chancellor, and I am looking forward to continuing our work together,” said Dr. Cathy Bruce, Trent president and vice-chancellor. “Over his last two terms, he has been a part of nearly every aspect of Trent life — welcoming students at Orientation Week, serving as judge in mock trial competitions, supporting philanthropic efforts, and of course, conferring degrees for thousands of students at convocation. In his extended term, I know Stephen will find new ways to support our students and continue to do great things for Trent.”

Stohn’s extended appointment begins July 2025 and will extend his term as chancellor until June 2026.

“When you get to this point in your life and career, after you’ve had some personal and professional success, it just feels right to give back and help the generation who are just starting out and looking at fulfilling their aspirations,” said Stohn. “I’m really enjoying the role of chancellor and having opportunities to collaborate with amazing students, faculty, and staff, supporting their success and the work Trent continues to do to make a difference for our communities.”

He has served as an ambassador for Trent’s Momentous Campaign, contributing to the award-winning gratitude video according to a press release. Stohn has been involved in alumni engagement, attending chapter events across the country, hosting reunions and fostering connections with graduates and the community at events like Head of the Trent and Trent Day.

At Traill College, Stohn involvement was notable according to Trent by attending college dinners, opening new facilities including the Jalynn Bennett Amphitheatre, and serving as a judge in mock trials for the Dual Law Degree program and the Three Minute Thesis competition for graduate students.
