Peterborough Petes Win Rematch On the Road to Brampton Steelheads

Just nine days after their last matchup, the Peterborough Petes defeated the Brampton Steelheads again, 4-2, at the CAA Centre on Saturday night.

Peterborough opened the scoring as Francis Parish made a pass to the high slot for Leon Kolarik, who sniped it home for a 1-0 lead.

In the dying seconds of the period, Steelheads defenseman Jakub Fibigr took a point shot and Petes goaltender Eston Rye made the save. There was a rebound and a mad scramble for the puck. Manuel Amado got a whack at it but teammate William Eggleton got the final tip for the goal and tied it up before the period’s end, 1-1.

The Steelheads picked up where they left off, as the Petes struggled to clear the zone. From behind the Petes net, MacGregor Richmond made a backhand pass to Troy Patton out in front. Instead of shooting, he quickly shuffled it to Kieran Witkowski, who had a tap-in goal for a 2-1 lead.

Peterborough responded a few minutes later after a faceoff win in the offensive zone. The puck came back to newly named captain Carson Cameron, who wristed it from the point and found its way through traffic and into the back of the net for a 2-2 tie.

While Peterborough was on the power play, they won a battle behind the net that resulted in the puck on Caden Taylor’s stick. He brought it to the faceoff dot, ripped it and scored for a 3-2 lead to round out the period.

The Petes wanted an insurance tally as Adam Novotný forced a turnover in the neutral zone and got it to Francis Parish late in the period. He got his way to the high slot and despite a defender trying to obstruct him, he sniped the top corner for a 4-2 lead and eventual win.

Easton Rye stopped 30 of 32 shots, picking up his second win of the season for the Petes (both against the Steelheads).

The Petes return home for Pride Night on Thursday to take on the Erie Otters. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Ontario Government Invests Over $186,000 For Peterborough County OPP Mobile Crisis Response Teams Expansion

The Ontario government is investing $186,860.34 over two years to support the mobile crisis response team expansion, led by Peterborough County OPP, announced at the Peterborough Police Station on Friday afternoon.

The funding will enable police to work with trained crisis workers to provide the specialized support often needed when interacting with people who are experiencing a mental health-related crisis.

“Our police are increasingly confronted with the need to assist vulnerable people in a mental health crisis,” said Dave Smith, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP. “This funding will assist the Peterborough County OPP deliver appropriate services focused on de-escalation. Meeting the unique needs of an individual who is in crisis will help ensure a better outcome for everyone involved.”

For 2025-26 and 2026-27, 36 police services and OPP detachments will receive approximately $9 million through the Mobile Crisis Response Team Enhancement Grant to increase the capacity of mobile crisis response teams across the province.

“We’re supporting our police services by providing them with the resources they need to assist vulnerable people in crisis situations,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “Mobile Crisis Response Teams are best positioned to respond to people experiencing a mental health or addictions crisis and are an important part of how police in collaboration with this government are working hard to keep Ontarians safe.”

“This grant will enable the OPP to expand its Mobile Crisis Response Teams (MCRT), allowing us to improve pathways and connections to necessary services for those experiencing crisis,” said Chris Galeazza, Inspector/Detachment Commander, Peterborough County OPP. “When police and health partners can continue working together through initiatives like this, safety is improved, and we see better outcomes for everyone.”

“We're proud to receive this enhancement grant to expand live crisis response across the 4,000 km² region served by the OPP,” said Calli Lorente, CMHA-HKPR Manager of Integrated Crisis Services. “With a second team in place, we can respond in real time to support those experiencing crisis. This timely response allows for a stronger connection to the person and a more appropriate connection to the right service. Connecting people in the community to people at resources in their community is the goal of this team. The expansion is exciting as it supports positives outcomes in all aspects of the community.”

Canada Post Workers Launch Strike Amid Federal Government's Announced Changes; Expect Postal Delays

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has launched a national strike on Thursday afternoon following the federal government’s announcement of significant reforms.

The CUPW had issued a strike earlier this year in late May. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, made the announcement of Canada Post’s changes on Thursday.

“Canada Post is now facing an existential crisis. Since 2018, the corporation has accumulated more than $5 billion in losses. In 2024 alone, it lost over $1 billion and in 2025, it is already on track to lose close to $1.5 billion,” he said. “Earlier this year, the federal government provided a $1-billion injection to keep the corporation operational. In the second quarter of 2025, Canada Post posted its worst quarterly results ever, losing $407 million. Today, the corporation is losing approximately $10 million every day.”

The following are the changes that Lightbound had announced:

  • Letter Mail Delivery Standards: Canada Post will introduce flexibilities to reflect today’s lower volumes. The average household receives just two letters per week, yet operations remain designed for far higher volumes. By adjusting standards so that non-urgent mail can move by ground instead of air, the corporation will save more than $20 million per year.

  • Community Mailbox Conversions: The government is lifting the moratorium on community mailbox conversions. Currently, three-quarters of Canadians already receive mail through community, apartment, or rural mailboxes, while one-quarter still receive door-to-door delivery. Canada Post will be authorized to convert the remaining four million addresses to community mailboxes, generating close to $400 million in annual savings.

  • Postal Network Modernization: The moratorium on rural post offices, in place since 1994, will also be lifted. The rural moratorium was imposed in 1994 and covers close to 4,000 locations. It has not evolved in 30 years, but Canada has changed.  This means that areas that used to be rural may now be suburban or even urban, but are still required to operate as rural post offices. Canada Post must return to the government with a plan to modernize and right-size its network.

CUPW released the following statement in response to Lightbound’s announcement:

“We’re disappointed that the union chose to escalate their strike activity, which will further deteriorate Canada Post’s financial situation. We understand that this latest update significantly impacts your business. Canada Post’s operations will shut down during a national strike, affecting millions of Canadians and businesses across the country.”

Mail and parcels are not being processed or delivered during the national strike and some post offices will be closed. Service guarantees are suspended for items already in the postal network. Customers have been notified that their scheduled pickups have been cancelled. Canada Post is not accepting new items until the national disruption is over.

CUPW assures all customers that all mail and parcels in the postal network will be secured and delivered as soon as possible once operations resume. When that happens, processing and delivery may take some time to return to normal fully.

Peterborough Petes Get Hit With Two Empty-Net Goals In Blanking From the Soo Greyhounds

The Peterborough Petes could not find the back of the net as they were shut out by the Soo Greyhounds, 3-0, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

The Petes move to a 1-2 record after the shutout loss by Soo. Photo courtesy of Kenneth Andersen and the Peterborough Petes.

Peterborough controlled the game offensively in the first period, peppering Soo goaltender Landon Miller with 16 shots while allowing only eight shots on goal. Both Miller and Easton Rye stopped all pucks that period and the game was scoreless after the one.

Things did not change in the second as the Petes saw more offensive opportunities with 17 shots but failed ot register a goal. Soo got more pucks to the net in the second but Rye stopped all 13 shots to keep the game scoreless.

The game’s first goal did not come until 6:15 left in regulation. The Petes tried to clear their own defensive zone but was intercepted by Jordan Charron at neutral ice. He passed it to Tobias Zvolensky at the blue line and ripped it from just outside the faceoff circle, beating Rye for a 1-0 lead. It was Zvolensky’s first career OHL goal.

The Petes pulled Rye with 1:35 left for the extra attacker, but with Marco Mignosa was able to deposit an empty-net goal with exactly one minute left in regulation to make it 2-0. Peterborough persisted with pulling the goalie but Jordan Charron scored 18 seconds later for the 3-0 lead to seal the game.

Rye stopped 27 of 28 shots in the loss and was named the game’s second star.

The Petes are back on the road to take on the Brampton Steelheads this Saturday at 4 p.m. at the CAA Centre.

United Way Announces Ambitious Goal to Raise $1.6 Million For 2025 Campaign

The bar keeps being raised for United Way of Peterborough & District which unveiled its 2025 campaign goal to raise $1.6 million, announced at the Healthy Planet Arena on Thursday afternoon.

Last year’s goal was $1.5 million while 2023 was $1.45 million. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

The 84th Community Campaign for United Way’s goal is a $1 million increase from last year’s $1.5 million. Jim Russell, United Way CEO said that it is positive that the goal gets raised every year.

“As our campaign chair (Paul Rellinger) said this morning, it's aspirational. We hit 1.55 (million) last year and nobody wants to be a part of doing less than what happened the year before,” he explained. “What you want in a campaign chair is some hunger, some animation and you don't want people to set the bar. I think it's appropriate that the goal is ahead of last year's number.

However, Russell wants to reiterate that the increased goal is not just for the sake of picking a number but rather, it is adapting to the increasing need of the United Way’s services to the community.

“The sad truth is that even the need in the community is pretty great,” he explained. “Waiting lists are longer for our services that our partners provide and so the need is there. It's picking a number for money needs to be invested in the right services in our community and we want to make sure that happens.”

New this year are two new fundraiser initiatives for United Way. The first is a monthly 50/50 online draw. The other is the United Way Ultimate Burger Battle taking place from Nov. 1 to 30 which would get local restaurants involved in the fundraising campaign in a creative and fun way.

“It was an initiative that some United Ways started a couple of years ago with local restaurants, creating a burger for the United Way with proceeds from the sale of that burger,” explained Russell. “It happens throughout the month of November so we're in the midst of trying to get restaurants on board with the campaign. It's been really quite successful in other communities ironically enough so we're happy to add that element to the mix.”

The announcement was made by Emma Harrison, Peterborough-Kawartha MP, on behalf of Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada; and Brian Saunderson, Parliamentary Assistant to the Honourable Rob Flack, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, alongside Jeff Leal, Mayor of Peterborough and Bonnie Clark, Warden of Peterborough County.

“Everyone deserves a roof over their head and a safe place to call home. This investment will help many families and individuals to heal and rebuild their lives, offering not just a home but also hope,” said Harrison. “The federal government’s ongoing support and commitment to creating affordable housing will help improve the lives of the most vulnerable from our community, here in Peterborough.”

“The federal government is committed to helping communities develop local solutions to address the housing crisis,” said Robertson. “The projects announced today will provide more safe, affordable homes for the most vulnerable residents of Peterborough. I’m proud of our government’s involvement, and of the tangible difference it will make for people in this community.”

The Governments of Canada and Ontario previously announced over $854,000 for this project, bringing the total joint federal-provincial investment to more than $1.6 million. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

The units are part of a new six-storey affordable housing development. The building comprises 53 units; including 37 one-bedroom, 11 two-bedroom and five three-bedroom units. The building is designed to support individuals and families facing challenges. This project represents a significant step toward addressing the community's urgent housing needs according Mayor Jeff Leal.

“The City of Peterborough is facing significant housing challenges, and the project at 681 Monaghan Rd. represents a major step forward in addressing them,” he said. “By working in partnership with the federal and provincial governments, we are securing the resources needed to build and repair affordable homes for the people who need them most. These investments provide safe, stable housing, and they strengthen our community for years to come. This project shows what we can accomplish at the local level by working together with our provincial and federal partners.”

This investment is made through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative. It is an initiative under the Canada-Ontario Bilateral Agreement, part of the National Housing Strategy.
