Rotary Club of Peterborough Launches 40th Annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim Fundraising Campaign

The Rotary Club of Peterborough has launched the 40th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim campaign, with an ambitious fundraising goal of $1.5 million.

This year’s theme is 1986, the year the Carl Oake Rotary Swim was founded, and organizers are encouraging those participating in the swim to dress in their 80’s attire.

“Our goal is to reach and surpass more that $1.5 million in support of Easter Seals, The YMCA’s Strong Kids Program and Rotary projects,” said Rotarian and swim committee co-chair Ken Seim.

The 40th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim is taking place Feb. 27 at the YMCA of Central East Ontario, 123 Aylmer Street South, at 7 a.m.

Peterborough Folk Festival Kicks Off 37th Year With Celebration Concert and Emerging Artist Award Submissions


The Peterborough Folk Festival (PFF) has opened its Emerging Artist Award submissions, kicking off its 37th year with a celebration concert featuring previous award recipients at Market Hall.

The PFF Emerging Artist Award strives to invest in upcoming local talent in Peterborough and the Kawarthas. The award has helped launch the careers of Canadian names such as Serena Ryder, Kelly McMichael, Benj Rowland, Irish Millie, Calvin Bakelaar (VANCAMP) and Jeanne Truax.

The Peterborough Musicians Benevolent Association (PMBA) supplements the award with the $1,000 PMBA Lynn Morris Memorial Award, and the Electric Alchemy Recording Studio provides the artist with recording and production of a single.

Submissions for PFF’s Emerging Artist Award are being accepted online until Feb. 20.

Celebrating the impact of the PFF Emerging Artist Program, PFF is hosting a concert Jan. 23 at Market Hall. The event will feature performances from recent award recipients Irish Millie (2023 recipient), VANCAMP (2024 recipient) and Jeanne Truax (2025 recipient).

PTBO Swim Club Makes Strides At 2026 Beast Cup

The PTBO Swim Club made a big splash across the competitive swimming community at this year’s Beast Cup in Belleville Jan. 10 and 11, having a weekend filled with fast swims, podium finishes and record-breaking results.

Across all events, PTBO Swim Club swimmers amassed an impressive 73 medals, including 29 gold, 22 silver and 22 bronze.

“These results reflect not only individual excellence but also a collective team effort built on dedication, preparation and support from coaches and teammates alike,” said PTBO Swim Club in a press release.

Leading the way were four swimmers who earned Individual High Point Awards in their respective age groups:

  • Benjamin Korkus – 10 Years & Under Male

  • Olivia Jones – 13-14 Year Old Female

  • Owen Stainton – 13-14 Year Old Male

  • Makenzie Decloux – 15 Years & Over Female

Strong runner-up finishes included:

  • Thea Ingram – 10 Years & Under Female

  • Sebastian Matamoros – 11-12 Year Old Male

In addition to individual awards, several swimmers achieved championship milestones. Decloux, Jones and Stainton all qualified for the Ontario Age Group Championships in multiple events as a result of their performances. Decloux also secured qualification for the Ontario Swimming Championships taking place in July.

Decloux added another accomplishment to her meet by setting a new PTBO Swim Club record in the Women’s 15 Years & Over Short Course 100 metre Individual Medley. Her time of 1:08.83 shattered the previous club record of 1:11.10, which had stood since 2001 and was set by Jacquelyn Craft.

“Breaking a record that had remained untouched for more than two decades was a defining moment of the meet and a testament to Decloux’s hard work and progression,” said PTBO Swim Club.

Peterborough Petes Fall To Ottawa 67’s 5-2 During Third Game In Three Days

The Peterborough Petes were in the Nation’s Capital Sunday for their third game in three days, ultimately falling to the Ottawa 67’s with a final score of 5-2.

Masen Johnston led the way for the Petes, making 41 saves in the loss. Braydon McCallum scored the first Petes goal, while Kieron Walton scored his fourth goal in four games. Garrett Frazer and Aiden Young picked up an assist each in the game.

While the first period saw no goals from either team, McCallum opened the scoring for the Petes early in the second. The 67’s finished out the period with three goals by Kaleb Dietsch, Thomas Vandenberg and Nic Sima.

In the third, Ottawa’s Spencer Bowes continued the lead for the 67’s, while Walton scored for the Petes later in the period. The 67’s closed out the game with another goal from Sima, wrapping the evening up with a final score of 5-2.

The Petes are back in action on Thursday when they host the Saginaw Spirit. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

51-Year-Old Peterborough Man Facing Impaired Driving Charges After Vehicle Found Stuck In Snowbank

A 51-year-old Peterborough man is facing impaired driving charges after his vehicle was found stuck in a snowbank Saturday night.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, a call came in about a vehicle stuck in an snowbank at Parkhill Road West and Aylmer Street. Officers on general patrol also spotted the vehicle and stopped to assist the driver who was trying to shovel out.  During discussions with the driver, the officers noticed signs of impairment.

As a result of the investigation, a 51-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 24.

City of Peterborough Lifts Significant Weather Event Declaration Monday

The City of Peterborough has announced it will lift its Significant Weather Event declaration Monday at 3 p.m.

The City declared a Significant Weather Event on Thursday as over the past several days, the City experienced significant snowfall accumulation and icy conditions.

During a snowstorm, when snow-clearing operations are underway, no parking is permitted on any City street. The penalty for interfering with snow clearing is $80, and vehicles may be towed. If towing occurs, the vehicle owner is responsible for all towing related fees. Snow-clearing operations typically take place between midnight and 8 a.m.

Petes Secure A Shutout Win Over Niagara IceDogs In Front Of 13th Sold-Out Home Game This Season

Easton Rye stopped all 25 shots he faced for his second career shutout. The win was Rye’s 23rd of the season, tying him for the league lead. Walton scored the lone goal for the Petes, giving him a goal in all three games since being acquired from the Sudbury Wolves. Adam Novotný and Carson Cameron both picked up an assist in the win.

The goal was scored in the first, while the rest of the game saw no further goals from either team.

Brantford Bulldogs Take The Win Over the Petes In the Third With A Final Score Of 4-3

The Peterborough Petes took on Brantford Friday as the Eastern Conference leading Bulldogs got ahead in the third, taking the win with a final score of 4-3.

Adam Novotný and Kieron Walton led the way for the Petes, each scoring and adding two assists. James Petrovski scored and had an assist while Adam Levac also picked up an assist. Goalie Easton Rye stopped 26 in the loss.

The Petes’ Walton brought Peterborough a goal in the first, while Petrovski raised the score to 2-0 in the second. Brantford’s Jett Luchanko put the Bulldogs back on the board with a goal before the end of the second period.

In the third period Adam Benak tied the score 2-2 for the Bulldogs. After another Peterborough goal by Adam Novotný and a second third period goal from Brantford’s Charlie Paquette, the Eastern Conference leading Bulldogs ultimately took the win 4-3 with a final goal from Benak.

OLG Issues Third-Quarter Gaming Revenue Payment to Peterborough of $624,898

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has made their third quarter payment totalling $624,898 to the City of Peterborough for hosting Shorelines Casino Peterborough.

So far during OLG’s fiscal year (April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026), Peterborough has received $2,053,832. Since the gaming site opened in October 2018, Peterborough has amassed $17,149,043.

These payments to host communities are based on a formula in the Municipality Contribution Agreement that is consistently applied across all casino sites in Ontario using a graduated scale of gaming revenue at the hosted site according to a press release.

“Year after year, a share of the revenue from Shorelines Casino Peterborough through OLG’s Municipality Contribution Agreement has been an important source of funding for Peterborough, helping to deliver vital services and helping to enhance the quality of life of local residents,” said Dave Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha. “Communities like ours who host a gaming facility benefit from their share of local casino revenue, while all Ontarians benefit from OLG’s gaming revenues, as 100 per cent of OLG profits are reinvested in communities across the province.”

27-Year-Old Peterborough Man Arrested After Multiple Residential Break and Enter Incidents

A 27-year-old Peterborough man is facing several charges in connection with three residential break and enter incidents.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were called to a residence in the Monaghan Road and Bolivar Street area after it was reported a man had entered a home while the family was eating dinner. The man reportedly fled when confronted by the homeowner. Officers attended the area and located a man matching the description given to police. 

Through investigation it was further learned that the man had broken into the same home on Saturday.

A third break and enter was also identified as connected to the suspect. This incident happened in the early morning hours of Wednesday, in the Maria Street and Rogers Street area. 

No one was injured in any of these incidents.

As a result, a 27-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Break, Enter dwelling house – commit indictable offence X3

  • Mischief – destroys or damages property

  • Use of Credit Card

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Fentanyl

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order X3

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Thursday.
