Canada Moves on to Semifinals at World Lacrosse Championship in Japan With Help From Four Peterborough Women

Four Peterborough representatives remain in the hunt for gold as Team Canada has advanced to the semifinals at the 2026 World Lacrosse Women's Championship in Tokyo.

Canada will face the Haudenosaunee tomorrow after posting a 4-0 record to reach the final four. The other semifinal will see the United States take on Israel. Friday’s game is set to take place at 3am Eastern Time, which is 4pm in Tokyo.

Peterborough native Erica Evans has continued to make an impact offensively, recording ten points through Canada's first four games. She opened the tournament with four goals and an assist in a 23-0 victory over Germany before adding two goals and an assist in a 13-11 win over Australia. Evans also picked up an assist in a 21-1 win over Wales and scored the team’s third goal as Canada edged host Japan 5-4 in a thrilling quarterfinal that needed overtime to settle.

Peterborough's Lexi Jenkins has been part of Canada's defensive unit throughout the tournament, while fellow Peterborough native Allison Daley is serving as the team's co-head coach. Jocelyne Lemay is also representing the city as Canada's team manager.

Canada is looking to capture its first-ever gold medal at the Women's World Lacrosse Championship, with just two wins separating the team from history.

Schedule Set for First Round Playoff Series Between Peterborough Lakers and Oakville Rock

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers are playoff bound, with dates now set for their best-of-five first-round Major Series Lacrosse series against the Oakville Rock.

Peterborough secured third place in the regular season with a 10-7 record and will open the postseason against the second-place Rock, with Game 1 taking place in Oakville.

The Lakers' first home playoff game is scheduled for Thursday, August 6th at 8pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Oakville swept the three-game regular season series, including a 13-12 victory over the Lakers at the PMC on July 16. Peterborough, however, heads into the playoffs on a three-game winning streak after closing out the regular season by securing third place.

Fans looking to attend every home playoff game can take advantage of the Lakers' new Pay As You Play ticket option. The program allows fans to reserve the same seats throughout the playoffs, with their credit card charged only after each home game is officially confirmed. If a home game is not played, there is no charge.

The deadline to register for the Pay As You Play program is Monday, August 4th at 9am

Single-game tickets go on sale Tuesday, August 5th at 10am through the Peterborough Memorial Centre box office and Ticketmaster.

SolarFest to Bring New Life to Lakefield Summer Tradition

Shopping, live entertainment, family activities and community spirit will come together in downtown Lakefield when SolarFest makes its debut on Saturday, August 8th.

A familiar Lakefield tradition is getting a fresh new look this summer.

The annual sidewalk sale has been reimagined as SolarFest, expanding into a full-day community celebration that will take over downtown Lakefield from 9am to 3pm. Queen Street will be closed between Bridge Street and Reid Street as visitors explore local businesses, enjoy live entertainment and take part in activities for all ages.

Local merchants will once again bring their businesses outdoors with sidewalk sales, special promotions, demonstrations and interactive activities, while a new Artisan Market will feature handcrafted goods from local makers.

Families can head to the Children & Family Village in Cenotaph Park for pony rides, games, crafts and interactive activities. The popular Lakefield Fairy Festival is also returning with fairy-themed storytelling, creative activities and a costume contest.

Throughout the day, local performers will provide live entertainment on the Main Stage, while food vendors will offer a variety of options. Visitors can also stop by a free community barbecue hosted by Lakefield IDA Pharmacy and the Selwyn Fire Department.

SolarFest is also encouraging visitors to support the Lakefield Community Food Bank by bringing a non-perishable food donation. Businesses and community organizations will also host contests, giveaways and activities across the downtown.

The festival is presented through a partnership between the Peterborough & the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce, Lakefield merchants, community organizations and Selwyn Township. Together, they hope to build on the longtime success of the sidewalk sale while creating an event that celebrates local businesses, brings the community together and gives families another reason to spend the day in Lakefield.

Whether you're shopping, enjoying the entertainment or simply taking in the atmosphere, SolarFest promises a full day of summer fun in the heart of the village.

June 29 Business Recycling Collection Postponed Until Tomorrow

Any business recycling collection has been postponed until Thursday due to mechanical issues from Emterra Environmental.

According to the City of Peterborough, the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area and Hunter Street in East City have already been collected earlier on Wednesday morning. 

If recycling was not already collected in the morning, it can either be left out until Thursday or be brought back in and set out again before 7 a.m. the following day.

Residents Encouraged to Check Voter Information Before Aug. 12 For the 2026 Municipal Election

Eligible voters are encouraged to check their voter information before Aug. 12 to ensure they are on the voters' list for the 2026 municipal election.

Residents can check, update or add their voter information online. Information submitted by Aug. 12 will be included in the municipal voters' list that the Province of Ontario provides to municipalities on Sept. 1.  

Residents can use RegisterToVoteON.ca to: 

• confirm they are on the voters' list;  

• update their name or address;  

• add themselves to the voters' list; or  

• add or search for a property they own or rent.  

To vote in the City of Peterborough municipal election, you must: 

• be a Canadian citizen;  

• be at least 18 years of age on voting day; and  

• reside in the City of Peterborough, own or rent property in the City, or be the spouse of an owner or tenant of property in the City.  

After Sept. 1, any updates or additions to the voters' list can be made at peterboroughvotes.ca.  

Students living in Peterborough while attending school may vote in the Peterborough municipal election as well as in the municipality they consider their permanent home, provided they meet the eligibility requirements for each municipality. 

Individuals experiencing homelessness, or who do not have a permanent home or fixed address, are also eligible to vote if they meet the voting requirements. 

Voter notification cards will be mailed to eligible voters before voting begins and will include information about online and in-person voting. Residents who do not receive a voter notification card by Monday, October 5 can view their voter notification card online at peterboroughvotes.ca. 

The 2026 municipal election will be held on Oct. 26. Online voting in the City of Peterborough opens at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 5 and closes at 8 p.m. on Oct. 26. Advance voting will take place on Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Healthy Planet Arena, 911 Monaghan Rd.

PRHC In Partnership With PTBO Fam Docs Brings 'Return & Learn' Program

Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) partnered with PTBO Fam Docs to bring the ‘Return & Learn’ program to the community for the first time.

It has hospital and family physicians collaborating to host 11 medical learners with roots in the Peterborough community for a three-day learning experience in July.

Participants are individuals who have grown up in the Peterborough area and are now studying at medical schools abroad. The goal of the program is to support these learners early in their medical school journey, enhancing their opportunities to match for residency spots closer to home, easing their transition back into the Canadian healthcare system, and supporting them in achieving their goal of returning to practice in our community.

Learners were offered a variety of opportunities during this year’s three-day event, including:

• Shadowing 22 physician preceptors at the hospital and in the community

• Learning clinical skills in PRHC’s dedicated Learning Centre and in areas around the hospital, including IV starts, injections, and mock emergency codes

• Opportunities to engage with other community organizations, including Paramedics, Public Health, Hospice, Peterborough Family Health Team, the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) Clinic, and Hiawatha First Nation, to gain exposure to healthcare environments outside the hospital setting

“The amount of coordination that went into the itinerary, the preceptor placements, and all the logistics made for a genuinely valuable few days,” said Max Moloney, a medical student who participated in the event. “I know that sentiment is shared amongst my peers as well. The shadow shifts and clinical skills training were a great experience, and everything ran smoothly thanks to the team behind the scenes.

 This unique initiative was co-designed and developed as part of a partnership between PRHC and the PTBO Fam Docs collective, led by Dr. Madura Sundareswaran.

“The Return & Learn program aims to highlight the breadth of opportunities for prospective physicians in Peterborough. By partnering with Peterborough Regional Health Centre, we are able to showcase everything our amazing community has to offer – including a glimpse into the unique and innovative community-based practices of our local family physicians,” said Sundareswaran. “PTBO Fam Docs is excited to continue to work with our community partners towards a long-term, sustainable strategy for physician recruitment and retention, for which mentorship, medical education and sense of community are essential.”

“More than anything, the Medical Affairs team has a way of making PRHC feel like home, where medical students are genuinely valued. It means a great deal to all of us, and to my understanding, it is a truly unique experience in Canada. Most importantly, it only reinforces how much I hope to build my career here at PRHC down the road,” said Maloney.

“By all accounts, this event was an incredible and rewarding experience for everyone involved,” said Dr. Janet Hurst, PRHC. VP & Chief Medical Executive. “To see the participation and enthusiasm from every organization and every learner for this initiative has been inspiring. Peterborough's Sarah Porter Scores Three Touchdowns in Team Ontario’s Gold Medal Win at National Championship in Saskatchewan

Peterborough’s Sarah Porter helped Team Ontario capture gold at the 2026 U18 Women’s Tackle National Championship, scoring three touchdowns in the championship game to help secure the title.

The former Peterborough Wolverine and current Peterborough Pagans Rugby U18 Girls player represented Ontario at the national tournament, held July 20-28 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Porter, who plays running back, was one of 25 athletes selected to the 2026 Team Ontario U18 Women’s Tackle Program following a competitive selection process that saw more than 90 players from across the province attend the team’s high-performance development camp.

Team Ontario opened the tournament with wins over Quebec and Saskatchewan before continuing its strong run through the championship rounds. Porter scored two touchdowns in Ontario’s 64-0 win over Manitoba before helping lead the team to a gold medal with a 68-8 victory over Quebec in the final, where she scored three touchdowns.

Porter’s recent football accomplishments also include being named the Senior Most Valuable Defensive Player for the Peterborough Kinsmen Minor Football League’s Roughriders in 2022.

The gold medal adds another achievement to a growing list of accomplishments for Porter, who continues to represent Peterborough on the provincial and national football stage.

Lakers Clinch Third Place with Overtime Win Against First Place Six Nations Chiefs

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers are heading into the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs on a high note after knocking off the Six Nations Chiefs 7-6 in overtime Tuesday night to secure third place in the Major Series Lacrosse standings.

The victory improved Peterborough to 10-7 on the season, secured third place in the Major Series Lacrosse standings and extended the Lakers' winning streak to three games. The win also locked up a first-round playoff matchup against the second-place Oakville Rock.

Ryan Lanchbury played the hero, scoring the overtime winner 3:17 into overtime. The Lakers led for nearly the entire game, building an early 2-0 advantage and never allowing the Chiefs to take the lead.

The win was especially significant as Peterborough became the only team to beat Six Nations on the floor during the regular season. While the Chiefs officially finished with two losses, their other defeat came by league forfeiture after an ineligible player dressed for a game against Oakville.

Justin Sykes scored twice for the Lakers, while Lanchbury finished with two goals, including the winner. Colton Armstrong and Mike Robinson also found the back of the net. Thomas Hoggarth picked up two assists, while Holden Cattoni and Braedon Saris added one each.

Goaltender Drew Hutchison turned in another strong performance, helping the Lakers hold off one of the league's highest-scoring offences.

Peterborough closes out the regular season Thursday night when the Owen Sound North Stars visit the Peterborough Memorial Centre for Fan Appreciation Night before the playoffs begin.

The playoff schedule and ticket information for the Lakers first round semifinal series against Oakville have not yet been released. The other series will feature Six Nations versus either the Brooklin Lacrosse Club or the Cobourg Kodiaks.

Peterborough Police Seeking Public's Help In Locating Suspects From Five Crimes Added to Bulletin

The Peterborough Police Service continues to seek assistance from the public to identify individuals involved in criminal activity in the City of Peterborough, the Village of Lakefield and the Township of Cavan-Monaghan.

Today, an additional five bulletins are being posted for identification of individuals connected to incidents of:

• Theft from vehicles at several area golf courses (two incidents July 16 and July 20)

• Fraud (two incidents July 3 and July 9)

• Quick change scams (June 22)

• Break and Enter at a Cavan-area gas station (Three suspects) (July 20)

• High value theft at a local business (July 16)

These incidents happened between June 22 and July 20.

If you have any information of the identity or whereabouts of these individuals, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.stopcrimehere.ca  

Police urge everyone not to approach, take pictures or follow them. They also warn everyone not to confront or attempt to apprehend anyone.

Peterborough Musicfest Putting Instruments In The Hands Of Young Musicians

A new Peterborough Musicfest program is giving children and youth the chance to discover the joy of making music before select concerts at Del Crary Park this August.

First Note officially launches Saturday, Aug. 1, offering young musicians an opportunity to explore a variety of instruments in a fun, welcoming environment before enjoying a night of live music.

The free hands-on program requires no registration, lessons or previous musical experience. Children and youth can simply drop in, try an instrument and experience the excitement of making music for themselves.

The idea behind First Note has been years in the making for Peterborough Musicfest, with the goal of creating more opportunities for young people to connect with music.

"One of the things we've talked about for years is finding more ways to put instruments into children's hands," said Tracey Randall, Executive Director of Peterborough Musicfest. "Not every young person has the opportunity to explore music at school or at home, and sometimes all it takes is one experience to spark a lifelong passion. We often ask, 'Where's our next Serena Ryder?' Maybe First Note is where that journey begins."

The program is made possible through support from the Peterborough Foundation, with instruments provided by Long & McQuade Musical Instruments.

“By creating free, hands-on music experiences for children and youth, this program removes barriers to participation and opens the door to creativity, confidence and the joy of making music,” said Shirl Delarue, Board Chair of the Peterborough Foundation.

First Note will take place before four Peterborough Musicfest concerts on Aug. 1, 5, 8 and 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Del Crary Park.

Children and youth are invited to drop in anytime during program hours.
