The family-owned store first opened on Hunter Street in 1983 before moving to its larger, newly renovated location at 180 Charlotte Street in the summer of 2023.

Over the decades, the shop has become a destination for families looking for toys that encourage imagination, creativity and hands-on play. Its shelves feature well-known brands including Brio wooden trains, Bruder trucks and Calico Critters, alongside an extensive selection of Folkmanis puppets and plush toys.

For owner Jean Grant, one of the most meaningful parts of the business’s longevity is seeing multiple generations of the same families walk through the doors.

“Forty-three years later, we are now welcoming the grandchildren of our very first customers into our new Charlotte Street location,” says Grant.

The shop is also celebrating its 43rd anniversary with a distinctly local touch. Peterborough musician Washboard Hank is writing a new jingle for the occasion.

Beyond the anniversary, The Toy Shop is preparing for another annual tradition that brings the community together during the holiday season.

Its annual toy drive begins in November, with all donated toys going directly to The Salvation Army for distribution to children and families in need during the holidays. Local radio stations have often helped support the initiative.

“This community has given us so much over the decades, and our annual toy drive is our favourite way to give back and ensure every local child gets to experience the magic of play during the holidays,” says Grant.

After more than four decades in business, The Toy Shop continues to be part of downtown Peterborough’s story, connecting generations of families through something as simple as the joy of finding the right toy.

History on Home Turf as Trent Men’s Soccer Get Set For First-Ever Home Playoff Game

For the first time in program history, Trent Excalibur men’s soccer will play an OUA playoff game in front of its home fans, with a chance to make even more history on Wednesday night.

The Excalibur welcome the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to Justin Chiu Stadium on October 21st for a first-round Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East Division playoff matchup, with kickoff set for 6pm.

The home playoff game is another milestone in a season that has seen Trent reach new heights. The team finished third in the OUA East with a 7-5 record, collecting 21 points to establish program records for both wins and points in a single regular season.

Those numbers surpass the previous program bests of six wins and 19 points, both set last year. Trent has now also reached the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first time.

The Excalibur will face a familiar opponent in Toronto, which finished sixth in the division with a 5-3-4 record. The Varsity Blues won both regular-season meetings between the teams, setting up a challenge for Trent as it looks to extend its historic campaign.

Last season, the Excalibur's playoff run ended in the opening round with a 3-1 loss to the nationally ranked Carleton Ravens. Wednesday offers another opportunity to take a step forward, this time with home-field advantage.

Admission is $15 at the gate. Trent students with valid student ID and children 12 and under accompanied by an adult receive free admission. Season passes are not valid for postseason games.

Those unable to attend can watch the game live at OUA.tv or follow Trent Excalibur on social media for live updates.

The daytime drop-in and meal program and overnight shelter service resume their normal operating hours.

Trinity Community Hub was temporarily closed on Sept. 29 so the operator, One City Peterborough, could complete necessary repairs to the building.

Day programming runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The overnight shelter programs run from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily.

Monday also marked the launch of the Clean Team pilot program, which helps keep public spaces clean and welcoming.

One City Peterborough has hired ten individuals to participate in the eight-week program, bringing their lived experience of homelessness and housing precarity to the work.

The team will focus on areas surrounding the Trinity Hub, the Peterborough Public Library branch on Aylmer Street, Simcoe and Bethune Park, the Peterborough Transit Terminal and other streets with high concentrations of businesses and pedestrian traffic.

The program aims to provide cleaner public spaces and improved neighbourhood appearance while giving employees income, job experience and community connection.

Students Explore City of Peterborough Services During Local Government Week

Students get to celebrate Local Government Week until Oct. 24, highlighting the important role of local government and the services residents rely on every day.

Recognized annually across Ontario in collaboration with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario, Local Government Week helps build understanding of how municipalities operate.

The week also recognizes municipal employees' work and promotes awareness of the wide range of careers available in local government.

As part of Local Government Week, local students will get a behind-the-scenes look at municipal operations and learn about City services and the work involved in delivering them to the community through tours and site visits organized in collaboration with school boards.

“One of the best ways to understand local government is to see the work happening firsthand,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “Whether students are learning about the equipment that keeps our City operating, exploring aviation, discovering local history or seeing what goes into running a major community facility, these experiences show just how many different skills and careers contribute to serving our community.”

Local Government Week provides an opportunity to learn more about the people, services and facilities that support the community.
