Peterborough Is Apparently Full Of Shiny Happy People According To New Report

It really is a wonderful life in Peterborough! Yes, we are one of the happiest places in Canada, according to this Centre for the Study of Living Standards report. To be more specific, we are ranked No. 7 in the country. So despite a lot of the findings here about so many people in the Patch desperately needing food and jobs and such, we're still happy!  Well, OK. Money doesn't buy you happiness, right? Maybe it's all that gas, Kruz FM's Mike Melnik suggests.

So why are we so damn happy? Thoughts?

Good Cause: Donating To "Samaritan's Purse" At Peterborough EMS

The past few years, I have made it a tradition to fill a Samaritan's Purse: Operation Child shoebox. A well thought out trip to the dollar store along with some knitted slippers and my shoebox was quick to overflow this year.

I dropped off my box at the Peterborough EMS Headquarters on Saturday. When I went there to deliver it, I was greeted by a friendly paramedic. As he led the way to where the boxes were being collected, I could not believe my eyes when I saw boxes upon boxes ready to be shipped. What an overwhelming community response to such a wonderful cause.

I will continue to do this donation every year, as I can only imagine the smiles on the children's faces on the other side of the world on the day those boxes that were packed with such care arrive for them to open.

PtboPics: Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School Anti-Bullying Event

Kim Driscoll (middle) pictured with students

The colour pink is prominent today at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School as they are holding an anti-bullying event spearheaded by teacher Kim Driscoll. The theme was to wear pink to send a message that students are taking a stand against any form of bullying.

Anti-bullying programs work, schools say, and more and more are focusing on stamping it out at their schools with such events. Kim Driscoll had T-shirts made for the event. Every one of them sold out.

Pink was chosen as the colour to be highly visible to help spread the message that the issue exists and for sympathy to those affected by it. Kim feels that it is a very real issue and is pleased by the involvement of the students and the teachers.

Even teachers participated in the event

PRHC Foundation Holding Info Session At Showplace This Thursday For "Closer to Care" Campaign

Recently, the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation announced a community fundraising campaign to expand cancer care services at our hospital, including the addition of a single radiation facility at PRHC so more local cancer patients can get life-saving cancer treatment here rather than having to travel to other cities to get treatment. The campaign is called Closer to Care, and PRHC Foundation President Julie Davis tells us "many people have expressed an interest in getting involved."

So they are having a volunteer information session this Thursday (November 18th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) in the downstairs lounge at Showplace on George Street, where they will share more details about the campaign and the different ways people can get involved.

Spread the word.
