Fleming College’s Inaugural Phoenix Cup Tips Off February 4
/The inaugural Fleming College Phoenix Cup is coming to the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre Feb. 4, promising an afternoon of local high school and college basketball excitement.

The community is invited to come out to the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre (775 Brealey Drive, Peterborough) and be a part of the celebration of local basketball talent featuring junior and senior high school games.
The event wraps up with a game between the Fleming Phoenix varsity men’s basketball team and the Durham Lords at 8 p.m.
Event schedule:
3:30 p.m. – High School Junior Boys: Crestwood vs. Holy Cross
5 p.m. – High School Senior Boys: Crestwood vs. Holy Cross
8 p.m. – College Varsity: Fleming Phoenix vs. Durham Lords
Adding to the day is a unique family connection as Fleming Phoenix player Owen Wisman will be cheering on two relatives playing in the earlier games; his younger brother Oscar Wisman, who plays for Crestwood, and his cousin Ryan Malloy, who is on the Holy Cross team. The two will go head-to-head during the Phoenix Cup before Owen takes the court later with the Phoenix.
The inaugural Phoenix Cup is “designed to bring the community together through sport while highlighting the depth of talent across local high school and varsity programs,” said Fleming in a press release. “This inaugural event launches what Fleming plans to become an annual event in partnership with local high schools, with future events to include male and female competitions across multiple sports.”
Peterborough Triathlete Tristen Jones Raising Funds For International Races
/Local Peterborough triathlete Tristen Jones is fundraising to support his international travel costs as he represents Canada in competitions abroad.

Jones started doing triathlons in the Peterborough area at just 10 years old.
“I’ve spent my entire life in Peterborough. Anybody who lives near me probably knows me as the guy who runs down Ireland Drive,” said Jones in an interview with PTBOCanada.
As he progressed through youth rankings, Jones qualified at the junior level to race for Canada internationally. It was at the North American Junior Champs in 2019 that he placed second.
Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Jones decided to put his athletic ambitions on hold to prioritize his schooling, studying Kinesiology on scholarship at Queen’s University of Charlotte in North Carolina.
Choosing to study Kinesiology was a no-brainer for the athlete, whose parents both pursued degrees in the field.
“One fed into the other throughout my entire life. I’ve always enjoyed sports, and I’ve played every sport possible growing up. That got me into sports science and kinesiology,” said Jones. “Once I started studying it in University, it reinforced my love for what I do.”
After graduating in 2024, Jones continued his training throughout the spring and summer. He went on to compete in Hong Kong, China and Malaysia. The athlete made a goal for himself; if he could make the Triathlon Canada top five ranking during this competition, he would continue to pursue his dreams.
At his second race in China, he placed fifth.
“This reinforced for me that I can do this for real. I’m just going to go for it and see what I can do.”
Donations help Jones continue to pursue his athletic career internationally, where he will participate in races and training across the world.
“As you move up in the world ranking and in the level of competition, you need more time to prepare yourself for those races,” said Jones. “Any donation or any tickets bought for the raffle is another chance for me to go and experience being a full-time pro athlete, and (compete) to the best of my abilities.”

Rotary Club of Peterborough Launches 40th Annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim Fundraising Campaign
/The Rotary Club of Peterborough has launched the 40th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim campaign, with an ambitious fundraising goal of $1.5 million.

This year’s theme is 1986, the year the Carl Oake Rotary Swim was founded, and organizers are encouraging those participating in the swim to dress in their 80’s attire.
“Our goal is to reach and surpass more that $1.5 million in support of Easter Seals, The YMCA’s Strong Kids Program and Rotary projects,” said Rotarian and swim committee co-chair Ken Seim.
The 40th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim is taking place Feb. 27 at the YMCA of Central East Ontario, 123 Aylmer Street South, at 7 a.m.

PTBO Swim Club Makes Strides At 2026 Beast Cup
/The PTBO Swim Club made a big splash across the competitive swimming community at this year’s Beast Cup in Belleville Jan. 10 and 11, having a weekend filled with fast swims, podium finishes and record-breaking results.

Across all events, PTBO Swim Club swimmers amassed an impressive 73 medals, including 29 gold, 22 silver and 22 bronze.
“These results reflect not only individual excellence but also a collective team effort built on dedication, preparation and support from coaches and teammates alike,” said PTBO Swim Club in a press release.
Leading the way were four swimmers who earned Individual High Point Awards in their respective age groups:
Benjamin Korkus – 10 Years & Under Male
Olivia Jones – 13-14 Year Old Female
Owen Stainton – 13-14 Year Old Male
Makenzie Decloux – 15 Years & Over Female
Strong runner-up finishes included:
Thea Ingram – 10 Years & Under Female
Sebastian Matamoros – 11-12 Year Old Male
In addition to individual awards, several swimmers achieved championship milestones. Decloux, Jones and Stainton all qualified for the Ontario Age Group Championships in multiple events as a result of their performances. Decloux also secured qualification for the Ontario Swimming Championships taking place in July.
Decloux added another accomplishment to her meet by setting a new PTBO Swim Club record in the Women’s 15 Years & Over Short Course 100 metre Individual Medley. Her time of 1:08.83 shattered the previous club record of 1:11.10, which had stood since 2001 and was set by Jacquelyn Craft.
“Breaking a record that had remained untouched for more than two decades was a defining moment of the meet and a testament to Decloux’s hard work and progression,” said PTBO Swim Club.

Peterborough Community Mourns the Loss of Local Sports Enthusiast and Former City Councillor Paul Wilson
/Trent University’s founding athletics director Paul S.B. Wilson has passed away Sunday at the age of 86.

Wilson, who held the position with Trent for 36 years, was also granted honorary alumnus status with the University in 1996.
His local efforts were further recognized in 2001 when he was inducted into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame.
After his retirement in 2002, Wilson received the Symons Award for Teaching Excellence and the Eminent Service Award, being recognized as the longest serving athletics director at a Canadian university.
"From the earliest days of Trent, he imagined what athletics and recreation could mean for students and spent decades turning that vision into reality,” said Dr. Cathy Bruce, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University in a press release. “He established programs and facilities that shaped the student experience and brought people together through sport, recreation and enjoyment.”
A dedicated community builder, Wilson also served Peterborough as Town Ward councillor from 1985 to 1997.
“Paul had an important and impactful influence on the City of Peterborough. As a multi-sport athlete, Paul reached his personal potential in rugby and squash,” said Mayor Jeff Leal in a press release. “Paul was an independent thinker who inspired great conversations. He profoundly cared about our community as he served as an Alderman and later as an interviewer on Your TV.”
In an interview with PTBOCanada in 2023, Wilson reflected on his local politics career and passion for squash.
“I was lucky enough that during the war in England, my mother and I were evacuated to a school that had a squash court,” he said. “That’s where it started.”
Wilson is survived by his wife Gillian, whose passion for the performing arts sparked her involvement with the Peterborough Theatre Guild.
“She’s been hugely involved during our time in Peterborough,” Wilson reflected. “In fact, she told me the other day that she’s been involved in 250 productions. I said ‘What, and counting?!’”
Wilson’s legacy lives on through his involvement in local athletics development and time on City council.

Peterborough Petes Goalie Easton Rye Named OHL Goaltender of the Week
/The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) announced Monday that Easton Rye of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season.

The 19-year-old from Peterborough turned in his first career OHL shutout coming out of the break, making 25 saves in a 2-0 win over the Oshawa Generals on Dec. 28. He was back in the crease on New Year’s Day, stopping 36-of-37 as the Petes beat the Kingston Frontenacs 3-1. Rye backstopped the Petes to victory in Owen Sound on Saturday, making 41 saves as Peterborough prevailed 5-3 despite being outshot 44-29.
Rye is 20-8-1-1 on the season with a 2.86 goals-against average and .916 save percentage over 30 games. His 922 saves are the third-most in the league this season. A former fifth round (89th overall) pick by the Petes in 2022, Rye has played to a career mark of 31-26-3-2 with a 3.52 goals-against average and .902 save percentage through 68 games.
The Petes are back in action Jan. 8 as they host the rival Oshawa Generals. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
Peterborough Petes Lose In Shootout Against Guelph Storm
/The Peterborough Petes three-game win streak comes to an end with a shootout loss against the Guelph Storm Sunday afternoon.

The first period saw a Petes goal from Yanis Lutz, while Illia Shybinskyi and Leo Serlin were the Storm’s goal-scorers in the second.
The Petes’ Aiden Young tied up the score in the third with just 1:15 remaining.
While overtime brought no goals from either team, Guelph ultimately took the win during the shootout, wrapping things up with a final score of 3-2.
The Petes are back in action Jan. 8 as they host the rival Oshawa Generals. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
Peterborough Petes Get First Win of 2026 In New Year's Matinee Against Kingston

Peterborough opened the scoring as the Petes capitalized on a turnover in the offensive zone. The loose puck went to Matthew Soto’s stick. His pass ricocheted off a few players and ended up on Brennan Faulkner’s stick and he scored on a wide-open net for the first period’s only score.
The Petes built their lead just 2:29 into the second as Soto bounced a puck off the half-wall for a breakout pass that somehow ended up on Gerry DiCunzolo’s stick. He corralled it in the offensive zone and scored on the backhand for a 2-0 lead. Kingston got on the scoreboard just under three minutes later as their power play just ended, Alex McLean pounced on a rebound and scored to make it 2-1. In the last 1:40 of the period, Peterborough was on the power play. Petes captain Carson Cameron joined the rush and one-timed it from the slot off an Adam Levac pass to give the Petes an insurance marker anda 3-1 lead.
In the third, Petes goaltender Easton Rye, clamped down and stopped all 14 shots he faced (the most in a period this game by Kingston). Both teams were kept off the scoresheet in the third but the Petes start 2026 with a 3-1 win.
The Petes are on the road for their next game as they take on the Owen Sound Attack on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Porter Martone's Three-Point Effort Helps Team Canada Coast to 9-1 Victory Over Denmark at World Juniors
