The winning image was unanimously voted as the winner that best represented a creative, imaginative and technically well-executed interpretation of the competition theme, “coffee at home” according to the press release.

“Focus” will be exhibited at the 2021 SPARK Photo Festival in when it will reopen in September and featured on the packaging of a special edition Sparkplug X SPARK Photo Festival 2021 Coffee. This special edition coffee will be released in time for the festival in September and will be available for purchase online across Canada.

DeClavasio submitted a unique series of digital double-exposure images that impressed the judges. They said he planned each of the five images to poetically reflect each stage of coffee at home from the craving, to the first sip and through to the last drop.

“The double exposure is captured in-camera with the intention of portraying the physical effects of caffeine,” DeClavasio described. “The feeling of that first sip, it's like your body is in bloom and your mind is ready for whatever the day has in store for you.”

The Toronto-based amateur photographer credits the pandemic for his return from a photography hiatus.

“I needed a creative outlet,” he said. “My overarching goal with my photography is to embrace the chaos surrounding us, reconnect with my surroundings, and hopefully find a way to mentally cope with all these external factors.”

Annual Fundraiser Issues Virtual Water Challenge To Peterborough

The Carl Oake Rotary Splash Challenge launched Monday, challenging Peterborough families to flim aquatic activities such as water balloon fights, pool dives and water guns among many things to get wet.

The challenge replaced the 35th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swimathon typically held at the Balsillie Family YMCA pool. It could not be held due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

The fundraising challenge runs from May 17 to June 19 where proceeds go towards Easter Seals helping physically disabled children and rotary projects in Peterborough.

Participation includes sharing photos and videos on social media while using the hashtag #CarlOakeRotarySplashChallenge.

With the Rotary Victoria Day Fireworks cancelled for the second year in a row, funds to help disabled children are needed more than ever according to event organizers.

Over $1.2 million has been raised during the 35-year span helping Rotary projects such as the Habitat for Humanity Youth Program, Homeward Bound Program, Family Day at Del Crary Park and Strong Kids program at the YMCA.

On their centennial anniversary, the Rotary Club has built a shade shelter on the Rotary Greenway Trail, contributing to refurbishing transitional housing units with the YES program, and a new health centre at Camp Kawartha.

Oake’s daughter and Century 21 United Realty broker Vanessa Hogan Oake has organized the event with her firm as she takes over the partnership.

“I’m honoured to carry on this event that was started by my father,” she said.

“It’s fun and to be safe and follow the rules until everything opens up,” said Rick Storey of the Rotary Club of Peterborough. "Use your imagination, the sky is the limit, the water is the limit.”

Donations can be made online at the Rotary Club’s official website.

Fleming Students Receive Certification to Give COVID-19 Vaccines

Twenty-six Fleming College students of the pharmacy technician program have been approved to help local pharmacies load and administer COVID-19 vaccines in Peterborough.

The Ontario College of Pharmacists issued the Emergency Assignment Registration for all pharmacy students in the province to gain certification to temporarily load and give vaccines. The emergency certification is for 60 days but is open to being extended as needed. The opportunity came after the Canadian government recognized a shortage in vaccine administers.

The second-year students received the opportunity as their practical exams as a pleasant surprise when they found out back in early March. It was a different format from what was originally planned.

“I wanted to change their practical exams on this,” said Amanda Mushynski, pharmacy technician program coordinator. “It would qualify them to give vaccines and they were ecstatic. The students jumped on it.”

Students would be dispatched to local pharmacies, public health units or mobile vaccination sites to administer the doses.

Helping these locations is a big load off pharmacists’ shoulders according to Mushynski.

“They’re trying to do their regular jobs as well as administer vaccines,” she said. “Our students can go into the pharmacies and do the injections. Some of the local pharmacies don’t have the manpower, they might hesitate but now they have a pool to choose from.”

Students are currently waiting on final confirmation from the college before getting the green light to give the vaccines during this article’s publication.

This unexpected yet positive news for the students is a rare opportunity that they took advantage of and can put them over the top says Mushynski.

“I’m so very proud of what we’ve done in the program and giving vaccines,” she exclaimed. “Flipping from face-to-face to learning online, learning from home and studying themselves. This is a group of phenomenal students. Their reward is to be able to give back.”

His win makes him the school and Ontario representative in culinary arts at the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) in a two-day event on May 26 and 27.

The virtual competition had Collins cook an appetizer, main course and dessert while supervised by a proctor at the campus’s classroom kitchen. Competitors had to detail all the elements used in each dish in addition to being judged by taste and presentation.

New Entrepreneur Revs Up With Motorcycle Service and Repair Shop

After 15 years of working with road hogs, Cody Carslake of Lakehurst opened his new motorcycle service and repair business, Carslake Motorcycle & Powersports in early May.

With the business located in Buckhorn, — and named after his last name — Carslake is a certified Harley-Davidson motorcycle technician; a service that has become scarce in Peterborough County.

With the local Harley Davidson dealership recently closing shop, I did feel like there was a void in the area and the market to be brought to the table,” he said.

The 31-year-old is the only employee in the business so far. With having two sons, Carslake can make his own schedule while balancing life as a father. Despite being open for only a few weeks, the new entrepreneur is enjoying the business he has been getting.

“It's been great,” said Carslake. “It's a challenge. Every day is a new experience. At the end of the day, every day I've enjoyed it whether it's a challenge or not.”

The business offers motorcycle maintenance, repairs, — both minor and major — customization and carries some basic supplies such as motor oil. While the shop services all motorcycles and ATVs, Carslake specializes in Harley-Davidson bikes.

In the shop’s first few weeks, he has already seen overwhelming business as the phone is “constantly ringing” according to Carslake.

Carslake became a certified Harley-Davidson technician after attending the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. He has also worked in Harley-Davidson businesses to become an expert technician for their bikes.

“I put a smile on every day when I get up because I'm going to do what I enjoy at the end of the day,” said Carslake. “It's doing something that I love and it's the game-changer.”

Ontario Government Extends Shutdown For Another Two Weeks

The shutdown has been extended for another two weeks until June 2 announced by Ontario Premier Doug Ford in a public address at Queen’s Park announced on Thursday.

The shutdown is to help combat the overflowing ICU numbers that remain in hospitals and to have “the most normal July and August possible.”

The stay-at-home-order started back on Apr. 3 has been extended by a full month since the original declaration. The shutdown was set to expire on May 20.

Ford was accompanied by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones and Dr. David Williams, Chief Medical Officer of Health.

During the shutdown, daily cases have gone down from 4,000 to 2,750 but the goal is less than 1000 for several days before considering looser restrictions according to Williams.

“Everybody thinks that’s great from where we came from, and that’s true but we still have a ways to get back down because we didn’t get all the way out of the second before we went into the third wave,” explained Williams. “We do not want to repeat that again.”

Starting May 31, youth aged 12 to 17 and their family members who have not received a vaccine will be able to book an appointment for the Pfizer vaccine.

Publicly funded and private elementary and secondary schools will continue remote learning.

Sports and outdoor recreational activities will remain closed. Ford agrees that golfing is not the issue but it is the post-golfing gatherings that are a concern.

“There’s nothing wrong with golfing, the problem is the mobility,” he said. “Then after golf, they go back, they have a few pops. That’s the problem.”

As of Thursday, 6.6 million residents have had vaccinated with at least the first dose with over 407,000 receiving their second dose.

The funds will be used to maintain the trail, extend the existing trail from Smith Street to Young's Point Road and reconstructing the Water Street boardwalk.

Donors are automatically registered as a “Friend of the Trail” and given their monthly newsletter.

“When you give a donation easily online through Canada Helps to the Lakefield Trail, you automatically are considered a Friend of the Trail,” states Bruce Bellchambers, Chair of the Lakefield Trail Stewardship Committee. “Funds are used for limestone screenings, boardwalk repairs, mulch for trees, native plant gardens, signage updates and more. Walking and cycling on the Lakefield Trail has provided a critical recreational opportunity for so many people during COVID-19. We’re glad to see people getting exercise and enjoying nature.”

As the Lakefield Trail celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, the Stewardship Committee felt it was important to raise awareness about the committee and grow the volunteer and donation base according to the press release.

Annual special events on the trail such as nature hikes, canoe day, historical walks will resume when allowed under COVID-19 restrictions.
