Lakelands Public Health's Seasonal Water Sample Courier Service Paused For the Winter Starting Nov. 27

The Township of North Kawartha and the Municipality of Trent Lakes are pausing their seasonal well water test sample drop-off program locations for the winter, with Nov. 27 the last day to drop off test samples.

During the winter months, residents who regularly use the seasonal drop-off sites can drop off their well water test samples at the following nearest location(s):

  • Lakelands Public Health, 185 King St., Peterborough
      – 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday
      – 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, Friday

  • Public Health Ontario Laboratory, 99 Hospital Dr., Peterborough
      – 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday

  • Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township Office, 1 Ottawa St., Havelock
      – 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday

Lakelands Public Health recommends regular testing of your drinking water. Water samples are checked for two types of bacteria: total coliforms and E. coli.

If E. coli is found, it means the water may be contaminated with fecal material that can cause serious stomach and intestinal illnesses. While anyone can get sick from contaminated water, young children, seniors and people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable.

“Well water should be tested year-round, especially after a thaw or heavy rain,” said Chris Eaton, Public Health Inspector, with Lakelands Public Health. “Testing your water is the best way to ensure it is free from pathogens and that your treatment system is effective.”

Seasonal service at both locations will resume in early April 2026.

This annual provincial funding supports community museums that meet Ontario’s museum standards of operation, ensuring that museums preserve, present and share the province’s rich cultural heritage said Susan Neale, PMA director.

“The CMOG and Pay Equity program recognizes the vital role that community museums play in education, culture and heritage preservation,” she explained. “This funding helps the PMA continue to deliver engaging exhibitions, meaningful educational programs and responsible stewardship of our community’s history.”

According to the City, applicants to the program are required to submit a comprehensive report on performance measures and finances and to demonstrate compliance with the provincial museum standards for community museums, including governance, collections management, conservation and public access.

Funding received through the program supports PMA operations, including collections care, preservation, and public access initiatives that connect visitors with Peterborough’s heritage

“We’re proud that the Peterborough Museum & Archives continues to earn provincial recognition for its dedication to preserving our community’s heritage,” said Councillors Alex Bierk and Lesley Parnell. “This funding reflects the strength of the PMA’s commitment to maintaining professional museum standards and engaging our community in its shared history.”

The two-year grant has supported the Museum’s Volunteer Program at its new waterfront location and helps strengthen connections across the Peterborough area and beyond according to a press release.

“The Resilient Communities Fund was designed to help vital organizations like the Canadian Canoe Museum adapt and thrive during major change,” said Dave Smith, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP. “This $150,000 in support has allowed the Museum to completely rebuild its volunteer structure, train new roles, and welcome back its dedicated team after a pause. I am incredibly proud that our government, through the OTF, is supporting the passionate volunteers who are so essential to the Museum's continued success.”

The grant supported the hiring of a Volunteer Coordinator and the development of several new key volunteer roles. These new positions - including Visitor Services Attendant, Exhibition Attendant, Cleaning Support, Lakefront Campus Attendant, Tour Guide, and Event Support. The mony also allowed the Museum to purchase equipment and provide training, networking and learning opportunities.

“This generous support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has been transformational for our volunteer program during a time of exciting growth and change,” said Carolyn Hyslop, Canadian Canoe Museum executive director. “Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, and this grant has allowed us to build the structure, training, and support needed to help them thrive in our new home. We are deeply grateful to OTF for helping us strengthen our community—paddling forward together with purpose and connection.”

Peterborough Petes Snap Winning Streak With Road Loss to Barrie Colts

The Peterborough Petes have snapped their five-game winning streak after falling 3-1 to the Barrie Colts at the Sadlon Arena on Saturday night.

The Petes are third in the East Division with a 11-8-1-1 record. Photo courtesy of the Barrie Colts.

The first period was quiet offensively as Petes and Colts goaltenders Easton Rye and Ben Hrebik, respectively, stopped all pucks that came at them. Peterborough had 16 shots to Barrie’s 10 shots.

The Petes drew first blood in the second period as Adam Levac brought it into the offensive zone. With no help, he took it on his own to shoot and scored for a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the frame. Alex Assadourian responded for the Colts just over two minutes later with a shot from the high slot to score on the power play. Just under eight minutes later, Cole Beaudoin received a pass and sniped it top shelf to score, giving Barrie their first lead and the score remained 2-1 going into the third.

Peterborough added another 12 shots to the final frame but could not find the back of the net. Beaudoin struck again with an empty-net goal and the Colts held on for the 3-1 win.

The Petes are at home for their next game on Thursday. They host the Brampton Steelheads for Stranger Things Night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Welcome to PTBOSpotlight! Every Friday, this segment showcases a business or organization in Peterborough and the Kawarthas. You will have the opportunity to learn more about the people behind the organization and the work they do for our community.

This week, we are featuring Shannon McCracken Voice Studio. It is owned by singer, actor, voice-over artist and teacher Shannon McCracken.

McCracken has performed across Canada and is equally at home in plays and musicals, film and TV and on the concert stage. Since opening her voice studio in 2014, she has brought her years of experience to those exploring their voices.

“I primarily teach voice lessons but also workshops and masterclasses, with a focus on singing, acting through song and audition technique,” explained McCracken. “As a teacher, I’ve been an adjudicator for the Kiwanis Music Festival, worked as the voice and music director for Thomas A Secondary School's musical theatre program and created and directed Theatre Art Training Academy’s summer intensive program and show.”

McCracken has launched her new kids' singing course, “Explore Your Voice!”

This dynamic singing course is designed to ignite a love for music and singing in kids aged 6-12. Through fun, interactive lessons, children will explore their vocal potential, gain new skills, access more sound and range and boost their confidence.

Whether you are a complete beginner or a budding vocalist, this program provides a supportive, encouraging environment to discover the joy of singing.

“Join the adventure and watch your child's voice soar,” said McCracken. “Explore Your Voice! is more than just lessons; it's a journey of musical discovery and self-expression. Let the singing begin!”

The Voice Studio recently opened its online store, “The Studio Shop,” which offers online coaching packages, courses, content and gift cards.

She also started the “Members Only Online Studio,” calling it her most exciting project. Here is where you can train, grow and discover your voice. From audio exercises to video classes, series, and monthly check-ins, you can now learn at your own pace. When you’re ready, be a part of a community of singers who are here to cheer you on.

“I believe that everyone can sing,” concluded McCracken. “Voice lessons are a great way to gain confidence, become more comfortable in both your body and voice and they provide you with a creative outlet to express yourself fully.”

The first goal of the game did not come until very late in the period as Grayden Strohack took a point shot and Colin Fitzgerald deflected the shot in for a 1-0 lead. It was the only score of the stanza.

The second period was a high-scoring affair. It took 36 seconds for Sarnia to tie the game up as Mitch Young scored from the point for a 1-1 tie. Fitzgerald helped Peterborough reclaim the lead on the power play. He was the recipient of a Braydon McCallum cross-ice pass and the former first-round pick one-timed it home for a 2-1 Petes lead.

The Sting had their first lead of the game just around six minutes later, after Easton Walos and Alessandro Di Iorio each had tallies to make the game 3-2 in favour of the visitors.

In the final two minutes of the period, Peterborough surged as they had a five-on-three power play. Just as the first penalty expired, Leon Kolarik wristed one from the high slot for a 3-3 tie game. Just 23 seconds later, Peterborough had an outnumbered attack on the rush and Brody Partridge scored to give the Petes a 4-3 lead going into the final frame.

Sarnia mustered 15 shots on net but Petes goaltender Easton Rye stopped them all. Braydon McCallum added an empty-net goal for a 5-3 win to continue Peterborough’s winning streak.

The Petes look to extend their winning streak on the road against the Barrie Colts at the Sadlon Arena for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
