"How Sweet It Is!" Dooher's Bakery Soft Launches Its New Location In Campbellford

After 49 years at 61 Bridge St. E. in Campbellford, Dooher’s Bakery is welcoming customers at its new location around the corner at 27 Doxsee Ave. N., which soft-opened on Thursday morning.

Original owners Harry and Muriel Dooher moved the bakery to 61 Bridge St. E. in 1977 after first opening at 44 Bridge St. E. in 1956. The bakery relocated to its current address because it had ‘outgrown’ its previous location.

“It (the previous location) was tight and there were often conversations at family dinners that if this location came up for sale, what a neat place to move the bakery if it worked out,” explained Cory Dooher, Dooher’s Bakery owner. “It came up for sale and the cards worked in our favour. I decided to take a leap of faith and move.”

Customers lined up outside the doors before the soft launch and kept flowing through the bakery on its first day. Cory says opening the shop on the first day of the new spot was very surreal.

“I've had so many emotional moments but I'm very happy here,” she said. “We've needed this space for a long time and seeing people come in with the reactions on their faces really fills my heart.”

The new space allows more shelved stock, bigger employee workspaces and a small dining area for customers to enjoy the baked goods in-house. While there were new additions, Cody assures that the bakery’s quality remains the same as it has been over the years.

“We kept everything the same,” she said. “Same recipes, same traditions; it's just a new space.”

The business launched in 1949 in Madoc when Harry and Muriel Dooher purchased a small bakery in Madoc. The business stayed within the family, as Cory is the third generation of Doohers to own the bakery, having purchased it 13 years ago. She also employs her children, spanning four generations, to work at the bakery. Her business’s success and longevity are attributed to her parents' and grandparents' teachings and philosophies over the years.

“My dad had a passion for it and taught me everything I knew,” she explained. “He set me up for sure and did not leave my side during the transition. I'm so thankful for him. (It's) Family traditions that were sent down and taught to me and now I'm teaching it to my son and hard work pays off.”

Cory also credits the community and customers’ support and is grateful for their business over more than seven decades.

“We would not be where we are right now if it wasn't for them supporting us,” she said. “It's not just our little community; it's communities all over. People near and far have been coming for years and it's just really special to know that people really support you that way.”

The following are Dooher’s Bakery’s business hours:

  • Sunday and Monday: CLOSED

  • Tuesday to Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Trent University Doctoral Candidate Honoured For Research Excellence In Electrochemistry

Doctoral candidate Tyra Lewis has been given the Electrochemical Society (ECS) Canada Section Student Award for her research exploring the relationship between electrical energy and chemical reactions over her seven years in the Martic Lab at Trent University.

Her research has earned her three major awards in the last year and is the first at Trent to receive this award. She was recognized for her research exploring electrochemistry as a greener approach to synthesizing and recycling organic compounds from environmental pollutants.

The Materials Science Ph.D. candidate was also honoured with the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) Graduate Student Award and the International Conference for Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy (ICASS) Burgener Research Graduate Student Travel Award.

"Tyra is an exceptional student and we are lucky to have her here at Trent,” said Dr. Sanela Martic, associate professor in Forensic Science. “She has contributed significantly to scientific discovery well beyond my own lab, as evidenced by the well-deserved national and international recognitions she has received over the last year."

Lewis joined Professor Martic’s lab in 2019, conducting research while she completed both her bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science and master’s degree in Environmental and Life Sciences at Trent.

Her work includes applying electrochemistry expertise to a new environmental challenge in agriculture: detecting sugars in soil according to Trent.

“Traditional methods for detecting sugars often require larger analytical tools that can be costly and time-intensive to use,” explains Lewis. “My research aims to introduce alternative approaches that could make testing sugars faster and more accessible.”

She is developing two approaches for detecting sugars. One is an electrochemical sensor that can be integrated with a smartphone for quick results. The other is a rapid colour-change test kit.

These solutions could improve on-site soil health assessment, helping farmers make informed decisions to optimize crop growth and productivity according to Lewis.

“The potential for this research to have a global impact motivates me to keep pushing it forward,” she explained. “Each research project has helped me recognize the value of the skills that I’m learning at Trent. While the topics have varied, the projects relied on many of the same core technical and soft skills. These are experiences that I will always be grateful for.”

Peterborough City-County Paramedics Nearly Vote Unanimously to Strike Amid Mental Health Coverage, Pay Equity and Workplace Protection Issues

Paramedics with Peterborough City-County Paramedics (PCCP) voted 185 to 187 in favour of striking to secure better mental health coverage, pay equity with other first responders and stronger protection for workplace injuries, announced on Thursday.

According to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 4911, 187 of 193 bargaining unit members participated in the 99 per cent strike mandate.

“Paramedics don’t want to strike. We want to do our jobs, taking care of patients while we build our career in Peterborough,” said Jordan Lean, CUPE 4911 president. “Our members see what’s happening in this service and are saying enough is enough. We’re losing experienced people, injuries are increasing, and management isn’t responding with any urgency to support workers or end the crisis in the service.”

CUPE members began bargaining in March with proposals to improve paramedic services, including addressing recruitment challenges, supporting workers dealing with the mental health impacts of the job and ensuring paramedics are fairly compensated for their life-saving work.

According to CUPE, one of members’ central proposals is improving mental health coverage for paramedics, as they said they have $500 of coverage annually, which covers roughly three sessions with a psychotherapist or psychologist. Part-time workers are not eligible for mental health benefits.

“The people doing this work see trauma, death, and tragedy as part of their job every shift. That’s true for part-time paramedics who are new on the job as much as for 20-year full-time veterans,” said Lean. “It makes no sense to tell a part-time paramedic that their mental health is worth less. If we’re serious about keeping people in this profession, we need mental health support for everyone.”

CUPE says that over the last three years, 54 full-time and part-time paramedics have left the service because of increased call volumes, a lack of workplace support, and better wages and benefits elsewhere.

“We’re losing the people who have the most experience and we’re having a harder time replacing them,” said Lean. “That should be setting off alarm bells. Instead, there’s no serious plan to keep experienced paramedics in the service.”

CUPE 4911 reported an increase of 50 per cent in workplace injuries between 2024 and 2025 while 14 per cent of full-time paramedics were off due to work injuries last year. According to a press release, Peterborough paramedics earn roughly 20 per cent less than other first responders.

“185 paramedics voted to strike to send a clear message to management, the Chief, and city and county councillors that the status quo simply isn’t working,” said Lean. “We want a fair agreement that supports the people doing this work, and Peterborough residents deserve a paramedic service that is strong, stable, and there for them when they need it.”

The parties are currently scheduled to return to the bargaining table on Oct. 6.
