The result was four days of hands-on work at the Norwood construction site, with over 60 men and women learning new skills, using tools and helping move the homes closer to completion.

The three families who will eventually live in the homes include a three-generation family of women, a single mother raising two teenagers and a young family with two small children living on a single income.

Women Build is designed to give people a chance to get involved in the construction of a Habitat home, even if they have never built anything before. Participants worked alongside Habitat staff and volunteers throughout the week, helping with everything from raising walls to other jobs around the site.

Several local businesses and organizations put together teams for the event, including Peterborough County, Leon’s Peterborough, ANDRITZ Hydro and Tom Reburn Realtor.

D.M. Wills Associates returned as the Presenting Sponsor for a second year and brought two employee teams to Norwood.

“We believe in what Women Build makes possible: bringing people together to create stronger futures for families and communities,” said Calli McEachen, Vice President, People and Culture at D.M. Wills Associates.

Community members also had the opportunity to take part through Community Build Day, adding to the group effort that continued throughout the week.

There was plenty of help away from the construction site as well, with Central Smith, Tim Hortons, Coca-Cola Canada, CIBC Pyle Wealth Advisory, Papa’s Pizzaland Norwood, Jersey Mike’s Subs, M & J Plumbing, That’s A Wrap Catering, Crumbl Cookie and Papa’s Burgerland Co. providing food and drinks for participants.

Community members also had the opportunity to take part through Community Build Day, adding to the group effort that continued throughout the week.

The week finished with a Women Build Cocktail Celebration on September 25th at U4 Rooftop Event Space at Euphoria Wellness Spa.

Habitat PKR CEO Susan Zambonin said the event showed what can happen when businesses, volunteers and community members come together to support local families.

“It really does take a community to build a home,” Zambonin said.

The $15,250 raised during Women Build ’26 will go toward construction of the three Norwood homes, helping bring the families one step closer to affordable homeownership.

Online voting will be available through PeterboroughVotes.ca until 8pm on Monday, October 26th, which is Election Day.

Voters don't have to wait for their voter notification card to arrive in the mail. Starting today, an electronic version of the card can be accessed through PeterboroughVotes.ca and includes the unique PIN required to vote online.

The same online portal allows voters to check whether they are registered, update their voter information, see the candidates and find information about where they can vote in person.

Voter notification cards are now being mailed to eligible voters. The cards also provide information about in-person voting and can be used to access free Peterborough Transit when travelling to vote in person.

Other Voting Options

For those who prefer to vote in person before Election Day, an advance voting opportunity will be held on Wednesday, October 14th, from 10am to 8pm at Healthy Planet Arena, 911 Monaghan Rd.

City Hall, at 500 George St. N., will also have accessible voting equipment and an internet voting kiosk available from Monday, October 19th through Friday, October 23rd, between 9am and 4pm.

On Monday, October 26th, voters can cast their ballots in person between 10am and 8pm. Unlike the accessible voting location at City Hall, voters using regular Election Day voting locations must vote at the location assigned to their ward.

The Election Day locations are:

  • Ward 1 – Otonabee: Healthy Planet Arena, 911 Monaghan Rd.

  • Ward 2 – Monaghan: Westdale United Church, 1509 Sherbrooke St.

  • Ward 5 – Northcrest: Northview Community Church, 1000 Fairbairn St.

City Hall will also offer accessible voting equipment on Election Day from 10am to 8pm, and that option is open to eligible voters from any ward.

Anyone who needs help with the voting process can contact the City at 705-742-7777 or elections@peterborough.ca.

It was a back-and-forth final, with Canada holding a 14-13 lead late in the fourth quarter before the U.S. scored twice to take the championship.

Evans finished the tournament with 14 goals and four assists, including three goals in the final.

WMSL Peterborough Lakers members Maddy Baxter and Nicole Perroni also had strong tournaments. Perroni scored four times in the final and finished the championship with 17 goals and six assists, while Baxter, who also plays for the Trent Excalibur, finished with four goals and two assists.

Her Trent Excalibur teammates Kylea Dobson and Maggie Cuddy played key roles throughout the tournament as well. Dobson finished with six goals and an assist, while Cuddy had seven goals and an assist.

Together, the five players with local connections combined for 48 goals and 14 assists over Canada’s four games.

Canada opened the tournament with a 32-2 win over Mexico, followed by a 28-6 victory over Jamaica and a 20-5 win over the Haudenosaunee before Sunday’s one-goal loss to the United States.

The second place finish comes as Canada continues its path toward the 2028 Olympic Games, with the team now set to compete at the 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championships in Colorado, where the top five teams will earn Olympic qualification.

Canada also earned silver on the men’s side, losing a tough one to the USA by a score of 12-11, with the winning goal coming on the powerplay with just 1.6 seconds remaining in the game. It was Canada’s first loss since Sixes Lacrosse was introduced in 2021. The lone local connection on the Canadian men’s team was their assistant coach, Peterborough native John Grant Jr.

Jordan’s death was announced on her social media on Saturday. According to the announcement, she passed away peacefully on Friday, October 2nd, surrounded by her family. No cause of death has been released.

For Peterborough music fans, Jordan’s passing hits close to home. She played one of her final concerts at Peterborough Musicfest on July 8th at Del Crary Park, marking her third appearance at the summer concert series.

Jordan previously performed at Musicfest in 2000 and again in 2015.

Born Sarah Jordan in Birmingham, England, and raised in Montreal, Jordan became one of Canada’s best-known rock singers. Her debut album, Tell Somebody, was released in 1988, with the title track earning her a Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist in 1989.

Her career would span more than four decades and include hit songs such as “Make You a Believer,” “High Road Easy” and “So Hard,” as well as acting and television work. She was also a judge on all six seasons of Canadian Idol.

Jordan continued performing and recording throughout her career. Her final release was Live in New York Ninety-Four, a 2023 live album recorded during a 1994 tour that featured Taylor Hawkins on drums.

She leaves behind a legacy as one of Canada's most recognizable rock voices, and for those who saw her at Del Crary Park this summer, a final Peterborough performance to remember.

Petes Rally Falls Short As Kingston Holds On For 5-3 Win

By Scott Arnold

The Peterborough Petes dominated the third period and outshot Kingston 22-6, but a five-goal deficit through 40 minutes proved too much to overcome as they fell 5-3 to the Frontenacs Friday night.

The loss drops the Petes to 2-5 on the season.

Kingston opened the scoring midway through the first period when Matthew Henderson found the back of the net, and André Mondoux doubled the lead a few minutes later.

Leon Kolarik got the Petes on the board with just three seconds left in the opening period, scoring with assists from Grayden Strohack and Mason Minsky, who picked up his first career OHL point.

Noah Snyder restored the Frontenacs two-goal lead 4:16 into the second before Nolan Buttar scored just 21 seconds later to make it 4-1. Adam Kelly then added another with just 14 seconds left in the period.

Kingston carried a 5-1 lead into the third period.

The Petes came out flying in the final frame. Mason Minsky scored his first OHL to cut the deficit to three just 1:34 into the period, assisted by Aiden Young and Landon Roulston, before Cooper Dennis scored at 13:42 with Kolarik picking up the assist.

Peterborough continued to pressure Kingston and finished the third with a 22-6 advantage in shots.

Yanis Lutz appeared to bring the Petes within one with 2:04 remaining, but the goal was waved off for goaltender interference.

Matthew Koprowski made his first start for the Petes after being acquired from Owen Sound on Thursday. He stopped 17 of 22 shots through two periods before Masen Johnston took over for the third and stopped all six shots he faced.

The Petes went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Kingston went 1-for-1.

Petes Scoring: Leon Kolarik (1G, 1A), Mason Minsky (1G, 1A), Cooper Dennis (1G), Grayden Strohack (1A), Aiden Young (1A), Landon Roulston (1A)

The Petes are on a northern road swing next week, starting on Thursday in Sudbury, followed by a trip to Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday and then wrapping things up on Monday with a 2pm Thanksgiving matinee in North Bay. Their next home game is set for Thursday, October 15th, against North Bay.

Living Local Marketplace was nominated for the ‘Retailer Spotlight Award’ alongside Dundas-based retailer ‘ellënoire’ and Amherstburg-based year-round market, ‘The Farm House Market.’

The award recognizes retailers that strengthen Ontario’s manufacturing industry by sourcing Ontario-made products and building strong relationships with local manufacturers, according to CME.

The finalists were selected following a public voting period that ran from Aug. 10 to Sept. 30, with over 81,000 votes cast across three award categories.

“The Ontario Made Awards shine a spotlight on the businesses behind the products Ontarians use every day, and the people helping to build a stronger manufacturing sector across our province. That recognition matters, and so does creating opportunities for businesses to connect and grow together. Through Ontario Made, we are helping manufacturers build valuable B2B relationships, discover new suppliers and strengthen supply chains here in Ontario. We look forward to celebrating this year’s finalists and the important contributions they are making to our economy,” said Dennis Darby, President & CEO of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME)

Living Local Marketplace is owned by Alicia Doris, who began the business after becoming unemployed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020.

Originally a passion project that spring, Living Local Marketplace began as a seasonal subscription box that shared the work of artisans and small businesses in The Kawarthas. It pivoted to an online gift box shop that fall because demand increased.

Her shop sells locally created artisanal goods, including housewares, personal care and hygiene products and newly added gourmet goods. Customers can create customizable gift boxes that can be picked up or delivered from local artisans. She opened a brick-and-mortar store in response to growing demand and customer requests.

Winners are revealed on Dec. 1.

Ontario Minimum Wage Increased to $17.95

To support over 700,000 workers, the Ontario Government has raised the minimum wage from $17.60 to $17.95 an hour, effective immediately.

This annual increase, tied to Ontario’s Consumer Price Index at 1.9 percent, helps ensure wages continue to reflect economic conditions while protecting workers and providing businesses with greater stability according to Trevor Jones, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

“Ontario’s workforce is our greatest advantage, and their hard work, skill and dedication keep our province moving forward every day,” he said. “As families and workers face higher costs and businesses navigate changing trade environments, today’s minimum wage increase will help workers keep pace with global economic uncertainty while maintaining a predictable approach that businesses can plan for.”

Those earning the general minimum wage and working 40 hours per week will see an annual pay increase of approximately $728.
