Trent University's 20th Annual President's Excalibur Golf Tournament Raises Record-Breaking $101,000 For Student-Athlete Scholarships

There was a record 24 teams swinging their clubs and raising $101,000 for Trent University student-athletes at the 20th annual President's Excalibur Golf Tournament at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club on Thursday afternoon.

“At Trent, athletics is about much more than competition. It’s about developing leaders – students who build resilience, confidence, discipline and teamwork,” said Dr. Cathy Bruce, Trent president and vice-chancellor. “The record-breaking support shows our student-athletes that they have supporters rooting for them, that their efforts are recognized and valued. The Green & White Athletic Financial Awards give students the chance to be and become—embracing who they are and fully realizing their potential without financial barriers getting in the way.”

Proceeds went towards the Green & White Athletic Financial Awards, which provide financial assistance to student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in sport, academic achievement and leadership within the Trent community.

During the 2025-26 varsity season, more than 70 student-athletes received a Green & White Athletic Financial Award, bringing the total number of recipients supported through the program to over 450. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

Aly Saydam, Trent men’s volleyball student-athlete, said the awards helped him maintain an academic average above 80 per cent throughout his undergraduate degree which earned him recognition as a USPORT Academic All-Canadian. This year, he also earned a place on the President's Honour Roll for graduating with an average of 90 per cent or higher and received two of Trent Athletics' highest honours: the Bonnie M. Patterson Award and the Arthur Cup.

“No journey to success comes without challenges,” said Saydam. “Being a student-athlete is very challenging. You’re expected to train like a professional athlete, while still excelling at a full-time university education. A major part of my success is due to generous donors like those here today. Receiving a Green & White Athletic Financial Award during each year of study has allowed me to focus more of my time and energy towards volleyball and my studies.”

Siemens Canada, Tree Canada and Otonabee Conservation Plant 70 Trees at Otonabee Court in Keene

Employees from Siemens Canada joined Tree Canada and Otonabee Conservation to plant 70 native trees at the Otonabee and Monaghan Court Seniors residence in Keene on June 10.

Planting trees has many benefits including improving air and water quality, reducing erosion, providing shade and cooling benefits, and supporting climate change adaptation efforts throughout the region. Photo courtesy of Otonabee Conservation.

According to Otonabee Conservation, the event marked the first phase of planting at the property in partnership with the Otonabee Municipal Nonprofit Housing Corporation.

The planting initiative will enhance biodiversity and improve wildlife habitat by planting native tree and shrub species in two phases, to be completed in the spring and fall this year.

“This partnership with Siemens Canada has created a lasting positive impact across our watershed over more than a decade,” said Janette Loveys Smith, Otonabee Conservation CAO. “Together, we have restored habitat, improved biodiversity, and strengthened community stewardship through hands-on environmental projects. It is inspiring to see Siemens employees dedicate their time and energy to initiatives that leave a meaningful legacy for both people and wildlife.”

“Since 2012, Siemens employees have helped plant thousands of trees in the Peterborough area and more than 16,000 trees across Canada,” said Ian Almond of Siemens Canada. “Supporting greener, healthier communities where we live and work is something we’re proud to be part of, and we’re thankful for the strong partnerships that continue to make these efforts possible.”

“Growing and caring for our urban forests has never been more important,” said Brijpal Patel, Chief Program Officer at Tree Canada. “Through strong partnerships like this one, we can support healthy trees, strengthen local ecosystems, and help communities become greener, healthier and more resilient for generations to come.”

PRHC Emergency Department Installing Weapons Detection System After Three-Week Trial Last Year

After a three-week trial last year, the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) is installing the Xtract One weapons detection system at the Emergency Department (ED) entrance on a permanent basis, announced on Friday.

The new system will be installed and activated on July 7. Following installation, everyone who enters or re-enters the hospital through the ED will be required to pass through the sensors.

The permanent installation of this system comes after a successful three-week trial in the summer of 2025, during which 113 items were removed from individuals entering the hospital according to PRHC.

The Xtract One system offers an advanced, non-intrusive screening process, allowing individuals to walk through without stopping or removing personal items. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced sensor technology, the system detects potential weapons and distinguishes them from everyday items.

PRHC assures patients and visitors can expect quick, seamless screening, with no need to remove phones, keys, water bottles or other personal items. The system is mobility- and accessibility-friendly and supports wheelchairs, walkers, and assistive devices. To protect patient privacy, the system does not use facial recognition technology.

Alternative screening will be available for individuals with medical devices, mobility needs or other considerations. Spiritual and cultural practices will continue to be respected throughout the weapons screening process.

A routine Sunday morning turned into a life-changing moment for a Peterborough resident who now holds a $12 million LOTTO 6/49 Gold Ball prize.

Bradley V. of Peterborough is celebrating a win that most people only dream about after scoring $12 million in the LOTTO 6/49 Gold Ball Draw on June 6, 2026.

The 47-year-old financial planner said he first noticed something unusual while checking his email and seeing a message from OLG. Unsure at first, he logged into his account to take a closer look.

He said it took a few moments of re-reading the details before the reality of the win fully set in.

The shock quickly turned into disbelief that lingered for the rest of the day.

Bradley shared the news with his three children by showing them screenshots of the winning ticket, describing their reaction as stunned silence followed by complete surprise. He also told his mother, who responded that she felt like she had to pinch herself.

Despite the windfall, Bradley said he plans to continue working for now while enjoying the added financial security. He also hopes to retire a little earlier than originally planned in order to spend more time with his family.

At the top of his wish list is a new vehicle, with both Audi and BMW in the mix.

The winning ticket was purchased through OLG.ca.

By Scott Arnold

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers scored four times in each period and cruised to a 12-6 victory over the Brooklin Lacrosse Club on Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The win improved Peterborough's record to 5-4 and moved the Lakers from fifth to third place in the Major Series Lacrosse standings. Peterborough, Oakville and Brooklin all have 10 points, but the Lakers moved ahead of Brooklin by winning the season series 2-1. The Lakers remain behind the Rock, who hold the tiebreaker after defeating Peterborough earlier this season.

The Lakers controlled the game from the start, building a 4-1 lead after the opening period and extending it to 8-3 through 40 minutes. Peterborough then scored four more times in the third period to put the game out of reach before Brooklin added three late goals.

Justin Sykes led the offence with three goals and an assist, while Thomas Hoggarth scored twice in his return to the lineup after missing time with an injury. Taite Cattoni also scored twice, and Ryan Lanchbury continued his strong start with the Lakers by recording six assists.

Rob Hellyer chipped in six points with a goal and five assists, while Mike Robinson, Liam Patten, Matt Gilray and Brad McCulley also found the scoresheet.

Drew Hutchison was outstanding in goal, making 50 saves as the Lakers earned their second win over Brooklin this season.

The game also served as PRHC Night, with the Lakers wearing special red Canada Day-themed jerseys that were auctioned in support of the PRHC Foundation's $70 million Campaign for PRHC. Around $3,100 was raised, with several jerseys still available.

Fans interested in purchasing one of the remaining jerseys can contact Pete Dalliday. Holden and Taite Cattoni's jerseys drew the highest bids at $500 each.

Proceeds from the second-intermission ball toss and donations made through ticket purchases also supported the campaign, and the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough has pledged to match the Lakers' donation up to $10,000. Fans can also donate directly to the PRHC Foundation online.

Peterborough returns to action Monday night when it visits Oakville before coming back to the Peterborough Memorial Centre to host Cobourg on July 2.

Trent University Indigenous Scholar Given Top Provincial Teaching Award

Trent University professor Dr. Barbara Moktthewenkwe Wall has been named a recipient of the 2026 Teaching and Academic Librarianship Award from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA).

“Dr. Wall’s teaching transforms how students understand their relationship with the land and community," said Dr. Cathy Bruce, Trent president and vice-chancellor. "Interdisciplinarity is a cornerstone of a Trent education, and Barbara embodies that work wholly. Students who are fortunate enough to learn from her develop an understanding of care for the environment through their academic and cultural experiences.”

According to Trent, the award recognizes the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies scholar, Knowledge Holder of mixed ancestry, Bodwewaadmii Anishinaabekwe, and geotechnical engineer, for her commitment to land-based learning and to bringing Anishinaabe ways of knowing, being and doing into Indigenous and environmental studies classrooms.

“Dr. Barbara Wall's classrooms are inherently different than students’ other classrooms. She teaches in a reflective, compassionate, intellectual way that breaks down barriers,” said Heléna Mauti of the Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences program. “Her lecture 'Trees As Knowledge Holders' brings students into a world where they see the power of trees from the perspective of Anishinaabe knowledges. In the students learning reflections year after year, they write about how unique of an experience this is.”

“I am honoured to receive the OCUFA award,” said Prof. Wall. “This is my life’s work and passion. Working alongside learners, practitioners and Indigenous communities to care for our lands and waters is the path forward to sustainability and the protection of biodiversity and all of life. This work brings hope in the midst of the global environmental polycrisis.”

Ruth Duncan of Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and Jessica Pauze of Garden River First Nation are former students of Wall. They were the nominators for her OCUFA award and contributed to chapters in the book based on their current Indigenous environmental practice.

“She has been one of the professors who has had the greatest impact on me,” said Duncan. “She has cared for me, taught me, and guided me through my journey as a student, both inside and outside the classroom. She has shown me how to carry myself with respect, how to approach challenges with courage, and how to ground myself in both knowledge and community.”
