A crowd of approximately 80 people gathered in advance of last night's regular meeting of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board trustees. Nerves would seem to remain raw from the recent decision to close PCVS. Students and parents greeted arriving trustees with signs and a message of concern. The largest group were clearly from the Save PCVS camp, while a few folks were present showing support for TASSS. During the meeting, passionate presenters from the community continued to speak out on this hot topic.

Halloween Safety Tips:
On Monday, October 31, officers will be out on foot, bicycles and vehicles conducting extra patrols on residential streets, in parks, plazas and schools, in an effort to reduce Halloween-related crime. By working together and following some easy safety tips we can ensure Halloween is fun for kids of all ages.
Before Halloween:
• Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping
• Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility
• Because masks can limit vision, consider using non-toxic make-up instead
• Purchase costumes and accessories that are flame resistant
• Use flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts. This is also a good time to replace the 
batteries in home smoke detectors • Eliminate tripping hazards on your property
• Feed your children a good, healthy meal before they go out. This will discourage them from filling up on Halloween treats that have not yet been checked
During Trick or Treating:
• A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their rounds
• Parents should know the route that older children are going to take
• Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going
• Remain on well-lit streets and always use sidewalks
• Never cut across yards. You may trip on shrubs
• Obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Do not assume that drivers can see you
• If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible
• Remove masks before crossing a street
• Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat
• Do not eat treats unless checked by an adult you trust
After Trick or Treating:
• Sort and check children’s candy upon their arrival home. Although tampering is rare, throw away any suspicious or unwrapped items.
Driving On Halloween Night: Be alert and watch for children on streets, alleys, crosswalks and driveways. Slow down while driving through residential areas, and be aware of the increased number of children walking in neighbourhoods. This is an exciting time for children and the potential for kids to dart out into traffic is heightened. Be extremely careful backing out of driveways and parking lots.

From October 27th to 29th, farmers, processors, health care professionals, educators and government officials will be coming together at Trent University for a unique food conference called Bring Food Home 2011: Preparing the Ground for a Sustainable Food System. Conference attendees will be engaged in collaboration to build a food system in Ontario that is responsive to the needs of all.
On Thursday, Bring Food Home will host the "Let’s Talk About Food" event at Showplace. It will feature scholar and food policy expert, Mark Winne; the Director of Sustain UK, Jeanette Longfield; Indigenous scholar and educator, Dawn Morrison; writer and broadcaster Jon Steinman; and a welcome address by Mayor Daryl Bennett. Tickets can be purchased at the Showplace Box office for $12, or $5 for students and seniors.
Conference organizers have been working closely with Farms at Work, a local non-profit that works to keep farmland active and healthy, to provide conference attendees with a range of educational and engaging experiences. A number of other local programs will be making presentations and participating in the conference proceedings.
Peterborough’s local food scene offers wonderful opportunities for conference participants to visit innovative food projects, including By The Bushel Community Food Co-op, JustFood Boxes and Trent’s Seasoned Spoon Café. A bus tour to McLean Berry Farm and Kawartha Country Wines is being offered. Conference attendees will also enjoy the "Feast of Local Flavours" at The Elmhirst Resort, featuring local beers and food made with ingredients from Peterborough and Kawartha area farms.

Stolen Truck Recovered:
The 2012 International truck bearing licence plate # 2664ZW that was reported stolen from the lot at Winslow Gerolamy has been recovered. On the 25th of October at approximately 3:00 pm police were called to the rear parking lot behind the Sleep Country store on Lansdowne Street West after witnesses observed the stolen truck parked there. Suspects removed the driver’s door lock, ignition, interior light, and plastic casing surrounding the ignition. Anyone with information on this theft is asked to call the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

Stolen Vehicle:
Sometime between 10:00 am on the 22nd of October and 9:00 am on the 24th of October suspects stole a 2012 International Pro Transport truck, white in colour, bearing Ontario licence # 2664ZW. The truck that is used as a rental unit was parked in the rear lot at Winslow Gerolamy Motors on Lansdowne Street West. It is valued at $115,000.00. Both sets of keys have been accounted for and at this time it is unknown how the vehicle was entered and started. Anyone with information is asked to call the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
