Why Peterborough Roller Derby Can't Find A Venue To Play In City (And More News On This Growing Sport)

The Peterborough Roller Derby, run by Lucid Lou, has two teams, a logo (and website in development), a trailer, and the momentum of many in the city behind it. It is an empowering sport for women.

What the Peterborough Roller Derby still doesn't have is a place to play in Peterborough. We inquired with Mayor Bennett about this matter recently, and the mayor, who is aware of this new league, put us on to Ken Doherty, who is Director, Community Services Department. We asked Ken why this league is having so much trouble securing a venue to play in Peterborough, and his response was this: "Staff have advised that there just is no time available in our arenas during peak times. They're at 97% occupancy. We have encouraged Lucid to see if the Knights of Columbus Bowl on Park could meet her short term need. We have also invited her to present to the next Arenas Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee."

So for now, there is still no home for the Peterborough Roller Derby in the city—Lucid told us recently that they will play out of Douro/Dummer arena on Hwy 28. But she does still hope to find a place to play in the city. In Toronto, she is in the final stages of setting up a Junior Roller Derby program through the City of Toronto, which will be creating a space for girls 9 to 18 to learn about Roller Derby and "sportswomenship". Lucid would love to work with the City of Peterborough to set up a similar program here for this growing sport, and has now advised them as such.

Also, Peterborough Roller Derby has a fundraiser on May 7 at the Red Dog, starting at 8 pm, where they will have prizes, an auction and bands—though Lucid tells us they are looking for another band for the fundraiser. We will "pay in beer and pizza!" she says. For more info, contact her here.

Peterborough's Mike O'Connor & Jag Tanna Involved With Upcoming Film "Textuality"

The upcoming romantic comedy Textuality (starring Jason Lewis, Eric McCormack and Carly Pope), about two people trying to navigate multiple relationships in the modern dating world, has a significant Peterborough connection. Mike O'Connor, co-founder of WIND Mobile, is executive producer on the movie and producer of the soundtrack, and I Mother Earth's Jag Tanna collaborated with Vapor Music on the soundtrack. Both O'Connor and Tanna reside here in Peterborough.

The Canadian release is set for April 22nd in select cities across Canada, and the soundtrack comes out April 1st.

PCVS Continues To Do Everything In Its Power To Keep Its School Alive

PCVS, which has been by far the most aggressive and vocal school in launching various public awareness campaigns to keep its school afloat (one of Adam Scott, Kenner, TASSS or PCVS will likely be closing), has now added a new poster campaign to the mix.

The posters—"Closed Doors At PCVS Means Closed Doors At Downtown Businesses"—are showing up in windows of stores downtown in support of keeping PCVS open.

PCVS's Peterborough Needs PCVS Facebook page now has more than 2,000 fans.

Flying In A Cessna Over Peterborough As Part of Women of Aviation Worldwide Week

The recent Women of Aviation Worldwide Week was an opportunity for women to be able to fly in a small aircraft who had never done so before. As soon as I heard that Peterborough was taking part, I knew instantly it was something I wanted to do. So on Saturday morning, I was so excited that I arrived at the Peterborough Airport well ahead of my 9 a.m. scheduled flight time.  

It was a dreary, cloudy day, and at first I wasn't sure whether we would even be able to fly. My nerves were kicking in as I signed the waiver—and pleasantly questioned my pilot, Hubert Wren, on his credentials.




We soon headed out to the tarmac, where Hubert assisted us getting settled and buckled into the four-seater Cessna. Hubert was great at explaining all the steps involved to prepare the aircraft for takeoff, and talking about what all the dials and buttons are for in the cockpit.

 

It wasn't long before we were zooming down the runway, and up we went. I have been lucky enough to travel quite a bit over the years, but it was surreal to be in the front passenger seat of such a very small aircraft. My nerves began to ease, and I soon began to enjoy the sights below. We flew as far as Rice Lake for about a thirty minute flight in total. I was so grateful to have had this opportunity to see our city from this bird's-eye perspective.

In total, 51 women participated on Saturday in the flights from Peterborough Airport—there were three pilots who volunteered their time—and plans are already in the works for next year's Women of Aviation Worldwide Week, which takes place March 5 to 11.

Peterborough Irish Club Hosting St. Patrick's Party At Evinrude Centre This Thursday

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, Irish Week was officially declared at City Hall prior to the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Mayor Daryl Bennett (see pic at left) and Colleen Allen, President of the Peterborough Irish Club, said a few welcoming words before the Irish flag was raised for the week, followed by the Irish anthem sung both in Gaelic and English.

The Peterborough Irish Club was founded in 1975 and has grown since the homecoming that year, which celebrated the 150th year since the Irish settlers arrived in the city and area. Currently, the club stands at more than 200 members in the community.

This Thursday (March 17th) starting at 6 p.m., the club will host Irish festivities at their annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations held at the Evinrude Centre (911 Monaghan Road). Tickets are $15 at the door. It will be a pub-style atmosphere with live music and large screen video performances by international Irish artists.

Former NHL-er George Laraque Speaking In Peterborough This Wednesday

The Peterborough Partnership Council on Immigrant Integration (PPCII) has organized a one-day event this Wednesday (March 16th) called “Georges Laraque: My Canadian Story”. Laraque will be sharing his experiences as a second-generation immigrant from Haiti and how it influenced his experiences growing up in Tracy, a small community outside Montreal.

On the ice, he was known as an "enforcer" but off it, he is known for his outgoing and friendly personality. He is committed and passionate about a number of causes, including animal welfare, the relief effort in Haiti, and promoting active, healthy lifestyles. Also, he continues to be involved with numerous charities and wants to serve as a positive role model to young people.

The event takes place this Wednesday, March 16th at 8:00 p.m. at Showplace Performance Centre. Tickets are available for free—limited to 4 per person—at the New Canadians Centre Peterborough (205 Sherbrooke St Unit D, across from the Fire Hall, in person only).
